Boys Hoop: Kolbe Cathedral’s Pfohl retires

by:

John Pfohl has announced he is retiring from coaching the Kolbe Cathedral boys basketball program after 15 years, the school said in an emailed statement today.

Pfohl presided over one of this region’s most dominating runs during his tenure at the school. He took over for in 1993 and over the next 14 seasons Kolbe Cathedral won eight SWC championships in 12 appearances–including six in a row from 1999-2004–and also won two state championships in five appearances.

Pfohl, 43, said he is retiring to watch his four children. Victoria, his oldest, is a freshman at Trumbull. He is strongly recommending assistant C.J. Shamas as his replacement.

“Coach Pfohl has provided tremendous service to the KCHS school community through its basketball program,” principal Jo-Anne Jakab said in the statement. “He has treated the student-athletes with respect and fairness, set the standards high and helped our young men to attain them. His replacement has a strong foundation upon which to build.”

Busy busy rainy day

by:

Whew, there’s a lot of rain out there and checking The Weather Channel it looks like there’s more on the way.

Check for all the latest postponements here on the CIAC Week 3 Football Scoreboard

Now, in my humble opinion ANYBODY who has a turf field should…no, MUST play. This is football, not cricket. Your taxpayers didn’t pony up millions for a turf field so your school can postpone games. These things were built for rain. Suck it up and play. This means you SCC. (not Hillhouse, though. Bravo, guys).

Now, to the postponements…

Shelton-Cheshire updates (Shelton wins 35-34 in OT)

by:

A pair of Shelton turnovers, including an interception thrown by Ray Pendagast that Cheshire’s Billy Ragone took 40 yards for a score, helps Cheshire put the Gaels into a 20-7 hole.

I’ve been watching it on the WTNH website on this link here. I’ve actually had better success with their pop-up video at this link here.

Now, Shelton has turned the ball over a third time early in the third quarter and is in big trouble as Cheshire is driving into Shelton territory.

Update: Cheshire couldn’t convert a fourth down and Shelton’s Matt Stevko just caught a 67-yard touchdown pass from Mike Brighindi. It is now 20-14 with just over five minutes remaining in the third.

Update: Shelton held on fourth and 5 inside their 10 yard line and marched right back down the field, scored on a touchdown run by Joel Youd and took a 21-20 lead with 9:01 remaining.

Shelton still leads with 8:39 remaining in the game.

Final Update: Shelton wins 35-34 in overtime.

When we last left, Cheshire took lead with 6:24 remaining when Billy Ragone, on a 4th and 4 from 46, hit Brian Havlicek for a short pass that turned into a 54-yard TD to made it 28-21.

Shelton took over at its own 18 with 2:18 left and had a 4th and 5 at the Cheshire 43 Mike Brighindi hit Jon Ercolino for a 7-yard gain and the first down. Shelton faced third and 3 from the Cheshire 29, and Brighindi hit Ercolino for 28 yards down to the 1.

On third and goal, Ryan D’Angelis scored to tie the game at 28-28 with 30 seconds left. That completed an 82-yard drive in 1:48.

In overtime: Cheshire scored on Ragone threw a 10-yard TD on first and 10. The kick, however, was low. Cheshire led 34-28.

Joel Youd ran five yards and then scored on the next play, a 5-yard run, to tie the score. After a Cheshire encroachment penalty nullified his first extra point, Jamal Mitchell kicked the extra point for the win.

CIAC debuts “Google Games”

by:

Matt Fischer at the CIAC just emailed us with a link to his newest creation: a Google-driven interactive map system which features exact locations and directions to all of the week’s football games.

You can see Week 3′s map by clicking here. If you go to the CIAC’s main website at www.casciac.org/ciacsports.shtml, you can flip between weeks.

This is a handy little item, especially for those making long trips into unknown territory.

Everybody thank Matt.

“Thanks Matt!”

There must be a bug going around because I was miserable all day Monday, fever, congestion, cough… Hence why very little has been up on this site recently, including the podcast, which I couldn’t even begin to record on Monday. By the way, I am officially disowning the media poll this week.

Greenwich at No. 10 ahead of Darien is a joke. Berlin at No. 9 ahead of both those teams is even worse. Hillhouse getting snubbed from the whole thing is probably the worst of ‘em all.

I’m convinced this would have been much worse without me. I’m going to go back and erase all of my votes and see how this would have turned out. In the meantime: discuss.

Danbury-Rutland (The article!)

by:

DANBURY.jpg Details of this result didn’t make our newspaper, understandably. I mean, I guess they don’t have mobile service in Vermont (kidding! It’s a beautiful town Rutland with plenty of amenities courtesy of the ski tourist trade up in Killington (formerly Sherburne).

(Ahhh, skiing. The only reason winter is remotely tolerable).

Anyway, here’s the game story of Danbury’s 33-21 win over Rutland from the hometown Rutland Herald:

Hatters strong-arm Raiders

Apparently Rutland is a perennial power up in Vermont football and they were treating this game the same way Greenwich treated last year’s clash with Naples, Florida.

SPEAKING of Naples! I heard they lost for the first time in two seasons. But no more free links for the Naples Daily News. That’s so 2007.

Darien 31, Greenwich 25 (Thanks, Libby!)

by:

DARIEN.jpgSaturday is a commonly rough day for me. I usually like kick it late nite with fellow football reporters and chow down some Buffalo wings at Archie Moore’s (in either Fairfield or New Haven) after Friday’s games. (Where have you gone, fellow Syracuse alum Phil Soto-Ortiz?)
GREENWICH.jpg

By the time I wake late morning, it’s almost time to hit the Saturday afternoon games. So, yeah, I wanted to head to Darien to see Greenwich. But it’s a long trip from my home outside New Haven. So I settled for a trip to Fairfield Warde-McMahon instead.
