Friday night wasn’t a good night for underdogs, especially in the SCC where the Division II crossovers got absolutely buried by their Division I counterparts.
“There’s a big difference between Division I and Division II, in case you haven’t noticed,” said West Haven’s Ed McCarthy.
Indeed, it was a 1-9 night for SCC D2 teams. The only win for Division II was still a blowout: Hillhouse’s 34-6 victory over Fairfield Prep. In other carnage elsewhere, 4-1 Foran was manhandled by 1-3 West Haven, 57-13, and Shelton crushed Law 62-14.
Mismatches weren’t just in the SCC. In the SWC, Brookfield hammered Stratford, and Pomperaug got off the mat to crush Barlow and Newtown rolled New Fairfield. In the NVL, Seymour and Ansonia had no trouble in their games. In the FCIAC, the Bridgeport schools both lost big. Ridgefield shut out Ludlowe and in a battle of league powers, Darien hammered Wilton. Read all about the mayhem here. Game summaries are listed here.
Perhaps one of the games of the night happened at Boyle Stadium in Stamford. Final score: Danbury 50, Stamford 48… a game we wish we had on tape, by the way. Please send it to 410 State Street, Bridgeport, 06604. c/o Sean P. Bowley, sports reporter or compress and email it to hssports@ctpost.com
The rest of the FCIAC gets underway today with a couple of big games: New Canaan is at St. Joseph, Trumbull is at Greenwich.
This was my birthday week, so pardon me for being a bit behind. In case you missed it, here was our 2008 Midseason Report
Finally, we here at the Connecticut Post blog will now take your comments as we await the results from Saturday:

the danbury vs stamford game was as exciting a game ive seen in a while.stamfords pass absolutely torched danburys secondary, the danbury run torched the black knights in a very exciting down to the wire game.chris evans # 8 is a special player for stamford.the inside trap danbury ran worked to perfection on a few occasians, resulting in long runs.d-1 prospect khairi fhort scored on a couple short runs, and also had a key 4th down run,but i cant give him and the d too much credit as they gave up plenty of yards tonite.he did have some nice pops though.man i tell you,if that stamford team plays defense for the rest of the year, they could be a problem, theoffense is there.would be nice to see fhort get more touches, hes a bull to tackle.

the well balanced scc really showed its colors this week. derby ,on the rise foran, and law gave up more points against average offenses than the knicks score all week.branford and lyman hall cant score and fairfield prep stinks.like i blogged from the start of the season the scc is vastly overrated–hand gives up 40 to north haven?and lets not forget the blogger who picked berlin as the top team in state.heres the quote of the week—–pomperaug coach declares his team has their mojo back after going 0-4. oh brother—-does anybody know what theyre talking about on this blog?
Comment by RAY BROWN — October 19th, 2008 @ 10:38 am
The results from this weeks cross over games in the SCC prove that the league is two distinct conferences D1 and D2. Except for Hillhouse over Prep and a strong performance by North Haven against Hand, all the games were blow outs going the the D1 teams.
Comment by Dave k — October 19th, 2008 @ 12:29 pm
lol @ ray brown, ray u are a legend in your own mind, ray your my guy! p.s. darien vs ncannan looking better and better as the weeks go by…staples may be in trouble this week
Comment by bigmikect — October 19th, 2008 @ 2:21 pm
Either Hillhouse is better than people think or Fairfield Prep is down this year. Prep should never have a bad team with the enrollment they have-though they do play a tough schedule. New Canaan vs Staples this Saturday should be a good one. Bunnell vs Masuk on Friday is the top game.
Comment by gman — October 19th, 2008 @ 4:59 pm
The only way I see Bunnell winning this game against Mausk is if the other recievers for Bunnell step up.If Mausk decides not to double team Harrions all night than Mausk is in trouble. If they do like I said the other Recivers have to step it up.
Comment by PBL — October 20th, 2008 @ 10:02 am
Hillhouse has an excellent team this year and prep is having a down year its that simple. Hillhouse should be moved up to D1 in the SCC its been proven many times that they can play with the D1 schools from the SCC.
Comment by Fp Sam — October 20th, 2008 @ 11:24 am
True, but who would you move down from D1 to D2?
Comment by hamden football — October 20th, 2008 @ 3:15 pm
how bout prep?
Comment by RAY BROWN — October 20th, 2008 @ 4:07 pm
Hillhouse and most inner city schools are capable of being powerhouses because they have built in atheletes. all they need is discipline and coaching.Look at the jobs done at central, hartford weaver, wilbur cross, hamdenand in years past bloomfield.Thats the main problem with waterbury schools in the n.v.l.—there are 5 high schools that are playing football–more than any other city in the state.their talent is thinned out, however the league has more team speed than most leagues-if they begin to upgrade the discipline and coaching-the league will be tough from top to bottom—-teams like hillhouse are succesful because they have something most of the scc teams dont have—-speed
Comment by RAY BROWN — October 20th, 2008 @ 4:21 pm
Ray how can you say Prep needs to move down to D2 in the SCC.They have been an excellent team in the SCC every since the league was created. They would dominate in D2. Most teams in the SCC dont have speed???? your talking out of your a** the SCC is the fastest league in the state.
Comment by Fp Sam — October 20th, 2008 @ 9:02 pm
Masuk is going to win easily this Friday. The Bulldogs don’t have as many weapons or quality linemen this year and will be exposed as frauds. A perennial loser in Weston pushed them around like rag dolls.
Bunnell’s winning streak ends on 10/24!
Comment by Masuk Rules 2.0 — October 20th, 2008 @ 10:34 pm
The SCC is the fastest conference to make excuses for why they lose. Our regional SCC teams like to pride themselves on the strength of their conference while they contribute nothing to it like Prep. The fact that they were on MSG is a joke. When was the last time they won a playoff game? It was probably during the Reagan administration.
Comment by Masuk Rules 2.0 — October 20th, 2008 @ 10:48 pm

I belive that Bunnell will beat Masuk on Friday. That being said, if Bunnell loses how would that make them a fraud ? You, sir, are the biggest fraud around. If they continue to play enough times, I’m sure that Coach Murphy and the Panthers will win evetually. Win or lose, Bruno and the Bulldogs will continue to be the class of the SWC.
Comment by A-Rod — October 21st, 2008 @ 10:50 am
Whats interresting Masuk 2.0 is that MSG has decided to show an SCC game in 2007 and 08. Thats two more than the SWC. Clearly MSG knows where the better football is. What MSG hasn’t done was go to the terrible SWC and show any of their games. Masuk don’t be jealous and do me a favor can you beat Bunnel you’ve lost to them like 10 times the past two years.
Masuk Rules 2.0 theres three good teams in your entire league thats embaressing and only one of them would compete in the SCC and its not Masuk.

I would rather have my team be a playoff contender yearly and one of the best in their conference than get exposed as losers on MSG. Can Fairfield Prep say anything otherwise? Has Ansonia ever been on MSG or are they not as good as Prep?
Comment by Masuk Rules 2.0 — October 21st, 2008 @ 3:02 pm
Frauds is a little strong I must admit. Paper Champions sounds better this year after Weston outplayed and out coached Bunnell.
Comment by Masuk Rules 2.0 — October 21st, 2008 @ 3:05 pm
Rumors have been confirmed that Masuk 2.0 is indeed Justin Conte. Its a shame a current player cant spend more time catching passes than he does blogging. Especially since Masuk hasn’t beaten Bunnell in what… god i cant even remember it was so long ago.
Ray, Clearly your anger against the SCC derives from when Ansonia applied to be in their conference and was barred in the infamous hearing of ’02 , in which SCC officials considered other teams for their league.
We all wish you did play in a competitive conference because we could see how you match up against good competition.
Comment by Sarah Palin Supporter — October 21st, 2008 @ 7:21 pm
I will say this Mausk 2.0.If you think Mausk is so good lets see Mausk single coverage Harrison all night long.
If Mausk does that I will be impressed, yet we all know the facts that Mausk will double coverage or shadow him all night. We know why, becasue Sloat & Harrison would eat up your secondary all night long.Bunnell would do the same thing they did to ND.First & Second plays of the game resulted in TD’s.

Bret I dont play for Prep i graduated last year and Prep does not have the highest male enrollment in the state off the top of my head i know Greenwich has a total enrollment of 3000 So probly around 1500 boys compared to Prep’s 900. Comment by Frank — October 21st, 2008 @ 7:50 pm
A minor point, but are you guys sure Prep is the biggest school in the state (by male enrollment)? I’m pretty sure Hamden is the biggest school in the SCC, and I thought some other schools like New Britain are bigger than that.
Comment by hamden football — October 21st, 2008 @ 8:24 pm
Hey MasukRules, do you want to see Ansonia on MSG? What’s wrong with you. Come see us in person and stop whining. If Fairfield Prep is getting torn-up by Hillhouse, what would you expect if they played Ansonia?
Comment by Remmy — October 21st, 2008 @ 8:29 pm
the highest level of football in state year in and year out is the fciac—for a league dominated by large enrollment schools it should be-but make no mistake about it the most succesful foot ball program jn state history is ansonia-as records indicate.
Comment by RAY BROWN — October 22nd, 2008 @ 7:24 am
so funny how as soon as preps season is over these losers (shouldnt you be hungover chasing tail in college?) bring back up the league debate. Prep looked awful on MSG, so did Hand.
Comment by hardy — October 22nd, 2008 @ 8:28 am
From the CIAC webpage, largest schools by male enrollment:
1) New Britain 1616
2) Greenwich 1404
3) Danbury 1390
4) NFA 1160
5) Westhill 1148
It looks like Prep, with 893, is bigger than only 3 other ‘LL’ schools. Hamden is the largest SCC school (1119).

I agree with the Palin supporter whomever it is 100 percent. I was in attendence of the infamous hearing of 02. I would love to see Ansonia play in a competitive league instead of beating up cupcakes every week. Its a shame Ray must take out his anger in this friendly blog.

Prep is having a bad year i dont deny that but im not on the team Ray. i support prep but as of now i am a fan of the SCC and firmly believe its the best league in the state with the fciac a close 2nd. NVLs not even in the conversation.
your the loser Ray not Prep because there having a down year. YOURE A MAN YOU’RE FORTY. DONT ATTACK THE KIDS. DONT KICK EM WHEN THEY’RE DOWN.(ok. st. coach.)

I’m a Masuk fan although anyone can realize that Bunnell has been almost as overrated as a certain Trumbull player that shall remain nameless. There is only one player on Bunnell that would start on Masuk and that is Mark Harrison. Bobby Baker is better than Chris Sloat and yea I just said that. After this Friday it won’t even be debatable. Let’s be honest that twenty seven mighty Weston Trojans took them to school. Speaking of single coverage on a receiver Justin Conte held Harrison to four catches in both the SWC and State Championship games. The stats don’t lie that Bunnell’s best player hasn’t showed up against Masuk. The Bulldogs had a good but not great senior class the last two years with plenty of varsity experience. This year they’re going to realize the difference between Junior Varsity the hard way against Masuk. The Panthers have figured out the so called “Mad Scientist’s” offense and together with the worst special teams coaching in the state they will crush the Bulldogs on their brand new turf which is probably not that nice anyways.
10/24 will be a Panther Victory!
Comment by Masuk Rules 2.0 — October 22nd, 2008 @ 11:06 pm
ive watched plenty of bunnell masuk film from last year…which was three games, and there was atleast 3 tds called back from harrison..includding a 99 yard play where he torched number 9 in the swc championship game, granted it was called back, he still burnt him. the other two tds were in the first meeting where he broke number 9 and the other was where he just ran by number 9… but im sure you dont remember that.. no trash talkin just saying what happened.. hope for good game on friday
Comment by j — October 23rd, 2008 @ 9:09 am
Masuck Rules,
No matter who wins Friday night, the only loser is you. Harrison may have been the 3rd best receiver Bunnell had last year after all-staters Easley and Jackson. Maybe Conte should have covered them. Baker could NEVER start for Bunnell, he couldn’t even beat out a little receiver who’ll remain nameless at the QB spot last year. How many games does Murphy get to figure out Bruno’s offense and actually beat him again ? About the great special teams play at Masuck, how’d that Baker punt work out against Brookfield, Slaot’s a better punter than him also.
Comment by A-Rod — October 23rd, 2008 @ 9:47 am
NO WAY is MasukRules 2.0 a true Masuk fan or player. That post was the last straw and a dead giveaway that it is a Bunnell fan trying to fire up his own team. More likely Craig Bruno or one of his assistants trying to light a fire under his team. No reasonable human would spout off like that. Who gives a hell about the turf? It CANNOT be a Masuk player because they all really have no choice but to respect a team that has beaten them so many times.
Comment by There is — October 23rd, 2008 @ 11:43 am
“There is at”
I really hope you weren’t serious saying it was a Bunnell coach writing on this blog to fire his team up. You think Coach Bruno needs to get on this to fire a team up? You think state championships are won writing on a blog pretending to be the other team?
If you really think that I feel sorry for you because that is ridiculous. Try to think a little harder next time you speak.
And “Masuk Rules 2.0″
I know you must be someone who has been on the field in some way and has had there season destroyed as they’ve watched Bunnell win back to back league and state titles. Nobody has that much hate toward a team as a casual fan. And the only year you have chosen to open your mouth is when you think Masuk is the “favorite”. How’d that work out vs. Brookfield. I understand you are jealous of the success Bunnell has had. And to be ripping Coach Bruno for winning championships…Not sure how bright you are there. Haven’t seen Coach Murphy do anything to win the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th game for that matter in the past two years.
And it makes no sense for you to trash Bunnell which has owned you of late. Saying how horrible and poorly coached Bunnell is makes Masuk look even worse for losing to them. That’s common sense.
This will be a good game tomorrow night but regardless of the outcome Masuk Rules 2.0 should be kicked off this blog because you are a joke.
Comment by Greg — October 23rd, 2008 @ 8:49 pm
j,
If you recall, cause i do…number 9 only covered harrison in the first game. 32 and 20 covered him in swc’s and state’s.
thanks.
Comment by George Hummell — October 24th, 2008 @ 8:42 am
Thank you Roto, for doing the research before you blog, unlike Bret who throws out stupid claims like Prep has the largest male enrollment. They have the 3rd smallest in LL.
I don’t know anything about an “infamous 02′ hearing” that the mccain and palin supporters are talking about, but I do know that when the FCIAC was rearranging its conferences back in the early 90′s, Prep petitioned to join the FCIAC and they were denied. This is because they would draw away talent from schools like Staples, Central, Trumbull, and maybe even Greenwich if they played consistent games against those teams. Probably a good move for Petrocio, Catalina, and Albonizio to vote down Prep coming to their conference.
(sean if you know anything about this 02′ hearing let me know)
As for this year yeah they are down, but it happens.
Im rooting for Bunnell tonight, just like I root for the Cubs to keep losing the World Series.
Masuk’s win streak against Bunnell will soon begin to resemble the Cub’s luck with the World series.
Bunnell 34
Masuk 13

I am still scratching my head over the west haven foran post game comments about division 1+2. West Haven and Foran coaches seemed to agree that the game results proved that Div 1 is much better than Div 2. Am I wrong, but aren’t these all high school kids? Don’t they both play under the same rules, for examle Div. 1 can’t play 21 yr. olds or get some kind of advantage to start the games. These are all High school kids that are playing the same gAme. I know div. schools are bigger and have more kids to choose from but their are only 11 kids on each side of the ball with equal opportunity to prepare during the week for games. I think It’s a cop out for Div 2 teams and slight against the d-2 players and would be insulted by the comments made by a d-1 coach about nthe difference between the 2 Div.’s. It’s football played by kids the same age playing under the same rules. I just think it’s a built in exuse for losing
Comment by JACK M. — October 27th, 2008 @ 8:03 pm
Just another thought on div-1 teams and div.-2 teams in the scc, if thier is such a gap between the two then they should seperate them as fAr as stats go. If a d-2 player is paling most of his games against div-2 teams then i dont think his stats should be included w/div-1 players stats, who according to the coaches from W.haven and Foran, agree their is a huge difference in talent. Why should his stats be compared to a kid from the FCIAC who is suppossedly playing against better competiton? Can’t play both sides of the fence, either their different or their not, but don’t say their different then put a Div-2 players stats with all the others, you can’t have it both ways.

Say what you want but my son was a part of the 2006 and 2007 teams and the numbers don’t lie. You Masuk people crack me up. You want to trash talk now.
