Analysis: Well, let me be the first to bid adieu to our friends in Berlin. Thanks for playing, boys. We’ll see you again if you win in Class M, but for now: see yuh!

It’s finally starting to shake out a little bit. But, I have to admit, that the foundation at the top is shaking. Yes, Ansonia has extended its win streak of 33 games. But, unlike those previous seasons when there was strong resistance by big-time teams like Holy Cross and Woodland in addition to Seymour, the Chargers’ lackluster competition is starting to have an effect on voter confidence.

Not to get too political here, but its kinda like the effect that dolt Sarah Palin is having on the McCain Campaign (OK, bad analogy comparing McCain to Ansonia. It’s not even close, but you get he picture).

ANYWAY… :) I think that’s why you’re starting to see the first-place votes starting to drop from the Ansonia ticket, especially in the writer’s poll. I don’t know this, but I think many voters are having trouble pulling their vote away from Ansonia because, really, what have the Chargers done to get bumped? Not much.

But the resumes of their competitors are becoming much more impressive as the weeks go on. As a voter, I can tell you in this unpredictable season it has been much easier to make a case for unbeaten teams like New Canaan, Bunnell, Hamden or New London. Bunnell can make a stronger case this weekend. So can New Canaan (if it hasn’t already).

Meanwhile, Ansonia clearly isn’t the same team is was the last two years. (Anybody who says differently is selling you something.) I’d argue it’s not as strong, either. Therefore, this team’s margin of error is significantly slighter than last year. One more close score and voters could make a mass exodus to someone else.

Then again, never underestimate the power of the voters. This is, after all, a bunch that actually had Berlin over Darien and Greenwich earlier this year. Yipes.

That’s my two cents for the day.

UPDATE: Whoops. I left without my main point: We should be voting after at least four weeks so we can fairly get a look at our various candidates and weigh their pros and cons.

  1. 1. Ansonia (10) 6-0…………..380…….1

is all I care about. Then again, #1 ranking doesn’t really mean much except that the bandwagon of haters gets a bit bigger each week.

    Comment by Remmy — October 22nd, 2008 @ 1:10 pm

  2. SPB, I WOULD HOPE RANKINGS WONT COME OUT TILL WEEK 4 NEXT YEAR.I DON’T THINK ANSONIA WOULD BE #1 IF IT DID THIS YEAR. LOOK AT NEW CANAAN SCH.COMPAIRED TO AHS NOT EVEN CLOSE.HAMDEN BEAT CHESIRE,HAND,WHAVEN,AMITY,SHELTON AND BRANDFORD,IDON’T THINK AHS WOULD BE ABLE TO SURVIVE THESE GONNA TEAMS WEEK TO WEEK.THEY HAVE TO SHOW UP TWICE THIS YEAR CROSBY AND SEYMOUR BOTH WOULD HAVE 4 TO 5 LOSES IN A DIFFERNT CONF.IF BUNNELL GOES UNBEATEN THAT MEAN THEY WOULD HAVE BEATEN POP,MASUK,BROOKFIELD,NEWTOWN AND TWO L SCHOOLS IN PLAYOFFS HARD NOT TO GIVE IT TO THEM.ALTHOUGHT I THINK MASUKAND NEWTOWN ARE BETTER AND BROOKFIELD JUST AS GOOD.

  3. No one hates Ansonia, we just don’t put them in the class of those that play a schedule consisting of more than a valley of Pop Warner teams. U play one hard game each year (seymour). Period end of story. Scrimmages don’t count either so do not use them in your argument.

    Comment by Brian — October 22nd, 2008 @ 1:45 pm

  4. no matter what happens its lose/lose for ansonia. if they blow someone out its cuz the competition is weak. if someone gives them a decent game its because ansonia is not that good.

i’ll be the first to admit they are no where near the last 2 seasons. and they are beatable. but has anyone really stepped up and made a case for the #1 spot??? new canaan?? maybe… new london??? you wanna talk weak schedules??? bunnell??? ask me on sunday. seymour??? we’ll know at the end of nov. hamden??? can they stop anyone??

every team still has question marks so i’ll stick with the team that goes out there week in and week out and beats whoever is in front of them with no question marks attached

  5. O boy, I think I just heard the flood gates open up. The hate will be flooding the lower Valley very soon.

Sean, your reaction was inevitable, and was predicted exactly by myself and AnsoniaVinny as far back as the pre-season.

People are tired of Ansonia being #1. Many of these people were not thrilled with them being #1 in 2006 or 2007 either, but it has reached the breaking point.

The Chargers are not as good as they were in the past two years, but this has more to do with how strong they were then and less to do with them being “weak” now. Ansonia has been robbed of their top ranking several times in their history. One more time wouldn’t surprise anyone.

  6. SPB… it took me a minute to figure out that your week 6 podcast was actually from last season. It was a very confusing minute.

  7. Also, I’m surprised Hillhouse actually lost ground to Hamden. Hamden dominated defensively, but had some offensive struggles against div. II Branford, while Hillhouse posted a convincing domination of div. I Prep. We’ll see next week though, Xavier is the biggest threat Hamden has left this season, next to Cross.

    Comment by hamden football — October 22nd, 2008 @ 2:52 pm

  8. Yeah, hamden football. Thanks for telling us. Apparently, I sent my editors the wrong file. We’ll have the 2008 Week 6 file posted ASAP.

    Comment by SPB — October 22nd, 2008 @ 3:02 pm

  9. Rob: I think the problem most people have with Ansonia’s #1 ranking is that it seems “inherited” from the last few years, and that if the state polls were compiled irrespective to past performance (ie no preseason ranking), than maybe other teams like New Canaan would make a more convincing argument to be #1 this season.

    Comment by hamden football — October 22nd, 2008 @ 3:05 pm

  10. Brookfield should be in the top ten on both polls.

Southington 4-1 over Brookfield who has shown to be the one to beat in the SWC so far.

    Comment by PBL — October 22nd, 2008 @ 4:08 pm

  11. I leave this comment for those of you who comment on Hamden’s defense. I posted a comment about a week ago and i’ll glady repeat. Hamden’s defense is not very big. However what they lack in size, they make up for it with “Speed.” This entire team is built on “Speed.” The defense is not going to hold many teams to zero, period!!! Some writers say we can’t stop anyone. My question to those writers is this. Can Anyone Stop Hamden? They’re averaging over 35 points a game and so far the defense has done enough to give them a chance to win. As for the Branford game,it seemed as though Hamden rested some key players. I don’t know, just my observation. But it sure didn’t look like they struggled. Again I don’t know if they win it all, but as a Hamden Fan, they sure are fun to watch. Last point, I really wish they could play Ansonia it would be interesting to see who would win (at least this year).

    Comment by Football Fan — October 22nd, 2008 @ 5:55 pm

  12. The weekly football polls are a case of the last man standing will be number 1. If you lose once you drop like a rock. Lose twice and you disappear off the radar. So lets look at the undefeated team in the top ten to see who might lose a game.
Ansonia – no chance the only quality team left on their schedule is Seymour and they are overrated. Class S playoffs no competion there either
New Canaan- Staples and Darien are possible losses.
New London no one in the ECC can beat them and they beat Seymour in playoffs
Bunnell- Masuk wins Friday Bunnell’s run is over.
Seymour- Ansonia nothing else need to be said.
Darien- New Canaan and Staples. So either NC or Darien will have a loss plus Staples beats at leat one of these teams.
Hamden- If they get by the tall grass and the ref’s in middletown friday they run the table. They won’t win Class LL cold weather and lack of defense hurt them
Hillhouse- Shelton and Wilbur Cross. The Gaels are heard from again.
Glastonbury_ these guys look good but have New Britain and Southington to deal with. if they run the table they will have a good arguement for number 1
So my perdiction is that New london or Ansonia will end up number 1 based on point spread against Seymour.

  13. I know everyone on here only cares about southern CT. Those are the only teams you all even consider. Just because the CT Post doesn’t cover the Hartford area teams doesn’t mean they aren’t good.

Watch out for Cromwell in Class S. Undefeated and ranked #1 in Class S and more importantly #1 in the Hartfod Courant regional poll.

They can beat Ansonia. You just don’t know anything about them.

    Comment by CP3 — October 22nd, 2008 @ 8:39 pm

  14. I’m glad it is being taken for granted that Ansonia and New London are both going to beat Seymour without much problem.

Keep talking like that. Everyone is in for a surprise soon enough. Seymour is ranked 5 in the state. They are more than up to the challenge.

    Comment by Cats 1 — October 22nd, 2008 @ 8:45 pm

  15. Dave k great post. Its a shame ansonia and new london arent in the same divison anymore a class S rematch ansonia v. new london would of been a great championship.

    Comment by Fp Sam — October 22nd, 2008 @ 11:47 pm

  16. calling ansonia’s rank “inerited”??? who exactly should be ahead of them??? no offense to hamden, im a fan of their program and i have friends who coach there. but you guys had like 1 win a season ago. and ive said it before beating the chesires, west havens, shelton and hand this season is not as impressive as it once was, these teams are down.

    Comment by joe — October 23rd, 2008 @ 2:36 am

  17. Damn I meant to put this here. I’m a Masuk fan although anyone can realize that Bunnell has been almost as overrated as a certain Trumbull player that shall remain nameless. There is only one player on Bunnell that would start on Masuk and that is Mark Harrison. Bobby Baker is better than Chris Sloat and yea I just said that. After this Friday it won’t even be debatable. Let’s be honest that twenty seven mighty Weston Trojans took them to school. Speaking of single coverage on a receiver Justin Conte held Harrison to four catches in both the SWC and State Championship games. The stats don’t lie that Bunnell’s best player hasn’t showed up against Masuk. The Bulldogs had a good but not great senior class the last two years with plenty of varsity experience. This year they’re going to realize the difference between Junior Varsity the hard way against Masuk. The Panthers have figured out the so called “Mad Scientist’s” offense and together with the worst special teams coaching in the state they will crush the Bulldogs on their brand new turf which is probably not that nice anyways.

10/24 will be a Panther Victory!

  18. Cats 1,

I agree with your shock that Seymour is being totally under rated. They have a D-1 fullbacker/linebacker who makes an impact on every play and a pedigree of winning football. Ansonia v. Seymour should be a great game and I have no opinion yet on who will take it, still too early.

If it happens, New London v. Seymour in the playoffs would be fantastic, with lots of talent on both sides of the ball it would be fun to watch.

  20. I love the confidence coming from pollsters like Dave K., Joe and Masuck rules. Do you ever come back and admit they were wrong when these predictions don’t pan out ? Just let the games pan out and we’ll see who’s #1 in December when it matters. Sal P., how are Masuk and Newtown better than Bunnell and Brookfield only as good ? Brookfield beat Masuk and hasn’t played Newtown. While they might both beat Bunnell and prove you right, they just might lose and prove you wrong. Let the kids play.

    Comment by A-Rod — October 23rd, 2008 @ 9:39 am

  21. Dave K-I agree with your post. New Canaan has too many obstacles in their way and Darien also. Ansonia should run the table along with New London. I would rate New LOndon over Ansonia right now because they did go out and schedule a very good Hand team. It’s not fair to penalize Ansonia becasuse the NVL does not allow outside games-but whats right is right. The schedule should be taken into consideration. If New Canaan or Darien goes undefeated(they won’t)then one of them should end up as the number one team in the state. Hamden and Hillhouse would also have a good argument.

    Comment by gman — October 23rd, 2008 @ 9:55 am

  22. CP3-Watch out for Cromwell?Come on, Ansonia will beat them by four touchdowns.

Lets face facts…The state does not have a powerhouse team this year.Ansonia is the best we have and they are not exactly a legit #1 team. They will play only one big game all year[Seymour]and they should beat them by two touchdowns.New London is overated also, they played a Hand team that was without Merrullo and three other starters. They[Hand] have rolled off 4 straight wins since the kids returned.

  23. I haven’t been able to keep up entirely on my Ct highschool football this year because of college so my questions are
who did Masuk lose to this year? and when is the Bunnel Masuk game?

    Comment by Fp Sam — October 23rd, 2008 @ 12:29 pm

  24. Cromwell beat Ansonia in 2004 in the playoffs. They are ranked first in the Courant poll.

I guess they will need to wait until they crack the Register poll to get some respect. That should happen soon enough.

    Comment by CP3 — October 23rd, 2008 @ 1:15 pm

  25. joe, if Masuk is so much better than Bunnell, why haven’t they been able to beat them over the course of the last two years?
6 losses over the last two seasons, and 5 of them have been to Bunnell.
we will find out on friday, but please do not say that Masuk is hands down better than Bunnell. Last I checked, Sloat has a ring on his finger, Baker doesn’t.

    Comment by pete — October 23rd, 2008 @ 1:41 pm

  26. Whose to say NC or Darien won’t go undefeated? You can make a case for either one as the top team in the state. Staples it the definition of “overrated” this year, as their ranking was based solely on last year. The FCIAC will be decided on Thanksgiving at Dunning Field (with Darien winning 28-21). They’ll meet again in the MM championship, and that game is anyone’s guess. Second games are always harder to predict.

The only losses either team will have this year are to each other, no one is beating those teams. They are #1 and #2 in the state, luckily, we get to see them play each other. AND even better, it’s the best rivalry in the state of CT. (Now here come the upstate haters….)

    Comment by Rob — October 23rd, 2008 @ 2:15 pm

  29. Harrison is a much better reciever this year than last.

Like I said I will be impressed if Mausk single covers Harrison all night.

It’s funny how before you keep bring up the year Bunnell went 6-4 & comparing that team to this one.Sure Bunnell’s D was soft that year.Yet I do remember Smith & Co. only losing by 1 TD to the might Mausk. If Smith had about 30 more seconds on the clock Bunnell would of scored.

Yeap Mausk made it all the way to the State Finals that year just to get slammed by Staples in the championship game.

    GL Friday!

1980′s- David Thompson- Hand HS (BC)
1990′s- Andrew Pinnock-Bloomfield HS (South Carolina)
2000′s- Steve Smith- Bunnell (Central CT)
There are alot of players I have not seen live. Andrew Pinnock’s performance in a State Championship Game was especially impressive-Man against boys…he is still hanging in there with the SD Chargers. Whis is Masuk rules? State your name, football number and SS#.

  35. masuk rules 2.0…. “The Bulldogs had a good but not great senior class the last two years”

the validity of that statement is certainly in question, considering the amount of stars that have worn the silver and blue in the last two years, which have made the “mad scientist” look like he knows what hes doing..despite all your bickering about what bunnell has done in the last two years, what do they have? 2 SWC and 2 State titles i think, right?

only one player from bunnell would start on masuk…also a weak arguement…davis, rosario, harrison, and aurelia would all start for the mighty panthers

  36. Pretty bold statement rob. Remember, Staples has one loss and if either NC or Darien were to take them lightly that would be a big mistake on their part. Wreckers aren’t done yet.

    Comment by CP3 — October 23rd, 2008 @ 11:29 pm

  38. to real Rob: didn’t know there was another, my bad. I’ll be fake Rob for now until I can think of something more clever than this.

I don’t think my statement is that bold. Look at who Staples has played so far. They’ve barely skated by, their offense makes TONS of mistakes. That game against Danbury? Please – Danbury is not a good team (especially heinous against NC, who didn’t have to try to win that game).

I agree they can’t take them lightly, they are still a good team, but they are not playing to the level that NC and Darien are at this year.

    Best teams in FCIAC:

1/2: NC & Darien – we’ll find out who is who on Thanksgiving

3: Ridgefield – didn’t show up against NC, played to their potential against Darien, beat the crap out of Staples and was in control most of the Greenwich game

4: Greenwich – nothing to say here, a down year for them, but 4th in the FCIAC is an up year for most teams

5: I guess you can put Staples here, but I’d put them on the same plane as St. Joe’s (overrated) and Wilton (overrated).

    NC wins this weekend, 31 – 10

I also think Darien will beat Staples in a few weeks just because staples will have 2 losses and the wind will be out of thier sales by that point. I fully expect Staples and Greenwich to be powerhouses again next year. Both are young and playing all these underclassmen will do much good next year.

I think MAsuk will beat Bunnell this friday but they are so even if they meet again in the SWC or L it will not be automatic. If MAsuk loses this game shame on them and their whole motto of Not again”. Now or never panthers !!

Chase for number 1 is a fruitless point. Any real fan give props to Ansonia for having a great program and tradition/winning streak and all that. However, if NC, Hamden, Bunnell,or Darien, go undefeated there is no argument that team is number 1 over Ansonia. Sonia just doesn’t play anybody and their class S is a joke. The AD’s are awful not allowing the conference to play outside for the one game. I don’t want to hear about glorified scrimmages and how they beat up Prep, Shelton, West Haven etc. If they can’t do it when it counts for something than it didn’t really happen. The other teams mentioned are doing it for real against much better comp.

Sorry to New London as well. People don’t like JC and beating woodstock and tourtalini doesn’t cut it. I will give them credit for playing at a tough venue to open the season. Not there fault Merullo and 3 other starters were out.

  43. Joe- I played there (graduated 06) and since my graduation I’ve helped out the coaching staff in the spring and summer when I’m not at school, and I come back for some games during the season, as well. Unfortunately I’m missing seeing this season in person, as I’m studying abroad. I plan to get into coaching after I graduate, so I’ve stayed very involved with the players and coaching staff.

  44. Big Mike – why the hating on the tomahawks? did you get a ticket speeding through G’bury? you should’ve stopped to see this team play. best running back in the state (jordan brown.) big, strong, and fast athletes on both sides of the ball. could easily score 70+ points a game if they didn’t call the dogs off by halftime. starting defense has allowed 1 touchdown all year. i don’t care who you play, that’s impressive. talk to a coach or a knowledgable fan who actually saw this team play and i think you might become a believer. let me know what i can send you for your retirement party when g’bury soars to #1 in the polls.

  47. hs football-no knck on them personally, but u and i both know they wont finish in the #1 spot, running the table or not.look whos above them and the way the rest of the season will likely go for those teams.im assuming they’ll make the states(southington&nbritain remain on their schedule),so lets finish this conversation after thanksgiving, then il either eat my words,or you eat yours.and before u hit me with the “anything can happen this year in class ll speech”hamden was bound to lose at least 1 game this year, and by the looks of it all 10 teams in contention have the very real posibility of losing at least 1 more game.personally id like to see newtown get a birth, its just way too early to tell at least in tht class.

  48. Ray Brown,

Come on, the Derby comment does not even make sense. Derby was #1 in 1990 under Charlie DiCenso well after Coach DeFilippo left. Also, Derby’s program has hit hard times over the past 15 years but none of that is due to Ansonia.

I am glad Derby got mentioned on this blog though, around now is when when Ansonia v. Derby would have usually played. Its a shame they do not play anymore, a classic rivalry that brought people out no matter the records of the teams. Its the kids who miss out the most, it was a special game.
