Justin Conte breaks loose for a 50-yard touchdown run on a bubble screen pass for the first of three unanswered touchdowns in Masuk’s 42-20 victory Friday night.
THE STREAK is over.
After a wild second quarter and a slight 21-20 Masuk lead early in the third, the Panthers scored three unanswered touchdowns in the second half for a decisive 42-20 victory at Bulldog Field.
Bunnell WR Mark Harrison caught a pair of touchdown passes, but left the game with an aggravated his shoulder and could only watch while Masuk’s Chris Cosmedy and Co. ran up and down the field in the second half.
It was Masuk’s first victory over Bunnell since 2005 and snapped Bunnell’s 21-game win streak dating back to Thanksgiving 2006.
Plenty of good video later, read the complete game story: now.
Elsewhere:
Brookfield, Bunnell’s next opponent, needed to survive a strong effort by Barlow to stay unbeaten at 6-0.
Shelton rolls through Fairfield Prep for its first SCC Division I West victory. Coach Rich Magdon did not coach the game due to illness.
St. Joseph broke its two-game slide with a 35-21 victory over McMahon.
And Greenwich got absolutely hammered by St. Joseph-Montvale N.J. and fell to 4-3. It is the school’s first three-loss season since 1997, Rich Albonizio‘s first year as coach.
And, much, much more all here in… the Friday night roundup and Friday night summaries.

Great game played by Mausk. You have to have a lot of respect for them not getting down & coming back after Bunnell tied the game 14-14.To come down & score right before half time with less than a mintue left took the air right out of Bunnell.Right before that Bunnell seemed to take the air right of Mausk.
3 key events in the game that killed Bunnell.
#1 the misqued snap which went way over Sloat’s head when Bunnell was on Mausk’s 5 yard line 1st quater.
#2 Of course the TD by Mausk right before half time.I blame that one on Bruno.Letting them beat you once & getting a break because Mausk got caught holding.Than to let Mausk beat you again & get a receiver behind 3 Bunnell denfenders in the end zone to score was crazy.Serioulsy the only thing Bunnell had to defend was the endzone, especially when Bunnell was beat the play before that.I watched those 3 Bunnell defenders move up when Baker was scrambling.
#3 Like I said in my ealrier post the other Receivers had to show up & catch the ball when it counted.Bunnell had a chance to score again on Mausk’s 17 I believe. After a couple of questionable pass interference calls on Mausk, Sloat threw a perfect pass in the endzone which went right thew the recivers hands.I keep saying if that was Harrison he would of caught it.
I said this about Bunnell when they beat Pomperaug. If you make that many mistakes against a team like Mausk there is not way you will win.Thats excatly what happened key mistakes especially the TD before half & the misqued snap cost Bunnell the chance to keep it respectable.
Mausk play a very good game.Bunnell’s lost of Harrison was critical.Harrison did an amazing job & maybe if he was not hurt for the whole 2nd half things could of been closer.
I would say Bunnell stayed in there till late 3rd quarter.Right after the 4 & out on Mausk’s 17 is where Mausk put the game away.Till that point it was anyones game.
GG Mausk, hopefully Bunnell & Mausk meet again down the road it all pays out right.Hope Mark Harrison recovers & his injury is not serious.

WOW!! What a GAME! Two terrific teams who represented their school and their league to the max. These teams are as good as any I’ve seen this year. The kid Sloat is tough and his passes are right on target. Masuk has a terrific offense and their defense is hard hittting. The difference in the two teams was Masuk has a better defense-Bunnell and Masuk can score on anyone-they will meet again in the L STATE PLAYOFFS. Mark Harrison is the real deal and once he catches the ball he is off to the races. Masuk has more weapons. Can’t wait to see this Brookfield team play if they beat masuk, HOW good are they. Top five teams are New London-Masuk-Ansonia-New Canaan-Darien. I have not seen Brookfield.

just tell me who in class L can stop bacarella, cosmedy, and conte? and then think about the return of shifty niko guerrera #1. masuk’s hiccup to brookfield means nothing, and i would love to see them meet again in the SWC championship (if thats possible i dont know how the points will add up) because masuk would walk all over that second tier football team. The panthers, and coach murph deserve a ton of credit for that win last night vs. bunnel they played a hell of a game.
Comment by aj80 — October 25th, 2008 @ 12:03 pm
I told you that the soft Bunnell defense and the “Mad Scientist” would be buried.Obviously the Bulldogs don’t have a strong senior class because there are still Panthers running to the house. How are they the class of the SWC now?
Victory!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Comment by Masuk Rules 2.0 — October 25th, 2008 @ 1:17 pm
I too attended this game (huge crowd by the way). Masuk thoroughly diced up Bunnell. This was not a case of Bunnell beating themselves all night. Yes a few mistakes were made on both sides of the all but it was very clear who the better team was. Credit both teams for a great battle.
SPB- any idea on the attendance?
Comment by deify — October 25th, 2008 @ 6:23 pm
First off im a bunnell fan but ill have to give masuk a ton of credit they came out last night and played great football and took advantage of the mistakes bunnell was making and their sub-par and inexperienced defense. When Harrison went out with the injury they wasted no time putting the game away. there a few things i took away from that game besides that they are both good teams and masuk is better.
1. Conte and Cosmedy seemed like men amongst boys out there.
2. How things change for the bunnell offense without Harrison, they never got in any kind of ryhtm after he went out.
3. The one thing that is apparent to me after the Bunnell loss last night was that Chris Sloat is alot better at quarterback then he gets credit for. The knock on him has always been his completing percentage. After watching the game you can see why. Other then Harrison(who even has his share of drops) the Bunnell recievers just dont catch the ball. There must have been at least and this is generous 10 drops, and i mean hit in the hands drops. Not only that he never gave up on the game, he was warming up on the sideline running up and down to stay warm even when the game was 42-20. he ran hard the whole game and i would like to congradulate the kid for laying it all out on the line with a team that just wasnt as good as masuk. if it werent for Harrison going out, the botched snap in the first quarter and the drops it could have turned out differently
hats off to masuk, you deserved it.
Comment by ryan — October 25th, 2008 @ 6:47 pm
Anyone know the extent of Harrison’s shoulder????
Saying Mausk buried Bunnell is an understatement
Bunnell hung in there till the late 3rd quarter. You know as well as I do Bunnell had their chances to possiblity take the game away from Mausk.Mausk got a break when Harrison left the game.Mark was eating up the Mausk secondary the whole 1st half even with 3 guys on him.
I’ll put it to you this way if Bunnell had the defense of their past years Bunnell would of blew them out.Yet I give Mausk creidt for the fact they never gave up & now have the experenice backing up their play.If this was last year & when Bunnell tied the game right before the end of the 3rd quarter, Mausk would of been shell shocked & folded without scoring before the half.
Comment by PBL — October 25th, 2008 @ 7:10 pm
Sorry meant to say right before the end of the 2nd quarter.
Still Mausk has a complete team & should make a run at the SWC title & Class L title.

I think from watching this game a few things became apparent to those in the stands:
1. The nightmare happened for the bulldogs, Mark Harrison was injured. What he means to that team is unexplainable, HE is truly a MAN AMONG BOYS. Almost caught a pass early on in the game in triple coverage. Bunnell and Chris sloat revolve around 81 and without him, they are an average football team.
2. Bunnell has never, and still doesn’t, have a clue on how to defend “The Hammer.” I mean come on bulldogs, every other swc team has learned from past bouts with pomperaug how to defend the smashmouth formation. It looked like the 2005 SWC out there, when everyone was clueless on how to stop Pomperaug.
3. How did Masuk lose to Brookfield?
Comment by SteveSmith12 — October 25th, 2008 @ 9:15 pm
Funny thing is reading the article on Bunnell the other day.Bunnell program starting to take off I believe.I like it where the kids who say they finally get their chance to shine.Yet those same kids did get their chance to shine in game, but could not back up their own words.
Big time game, needed to step up the D a notch & the O especially when the reciever was out.Maybe they should of did the article afterwards & not before.
Comment by KLE — October 26th, 2008 @ 9:04 am
SteveSmith12 – first of all, you are not Steve Smith. Second, Bunnell has defended the Hammer on numerous occasions. They defended it will against Pomperaug in 2006 (Pomperaug was held scoreless for 45 minutes of that game), and obviously they defended it against Masuk both times in 2006, and all 3 times in 2007. I think what happened in this game was a mistake on everyone on the Bunnell defense. In the past two years, if Masuk came out in the Hammer, Bunnell would shift to a 4-4 or a 5-2, with the safeties playing about 5 yards off the ball. However, this years team didn’t adjust, and stayed with a 3 man line – something Bunnell doesn’t normally do. And if you want to talk about defending the run, think about the state championship 2 years ago. Staples beat the #1 team in the state twice in two weeks (#1 Greenwich on Thanksgiving and then #1 West Haven in the semi-finals). Just in case you forgot, Staples smoked Greenwich 20-0, then Bunnell wiped Ken Strong Stadium with them.
Bunnell’s team has been blessed with rare natural talent and many different playmakers, but their championships come from having a lot of heart. They gave up about 4 inches and 40 pounds on the offensive and defensive lines against Staples in 06. So you can guarantee that they will be back against Brookfield, and hopefully playing in December again.
Comment by bulldogs5 — October 26th, 2008 @ 6:53 pm
I too was at this game and I am very surprised with some of these comments made so far…
Masuk dominated this entire game and it shows that Bunnell is not a Top 10 team in the state let alone Top 5. Now yes, they have earned respect after passed years but I saw a BELOW average football team Friday night. Without Mark Harrison this is a JV team. Their defense could do nothing against a potent Masuk offense. Not to take anything away from Masuk, they ran through Junior Pee Wee arm tackles throughout the entire game. Craig Bruno cannot hide behind Steve Smith an co. anymore…and to whoever thinks Chris Sloat can hold his own against Smith is wrong.
Now yes Sloat throws the deep ball very well…But “ryan” the reason why his completion percentage is down is because he takes three step drops and lofts the ball up in the air in hopes that the great harrisson will bring it down. he has a good running ablity but is not even the best running quarterback in the SWC (Newtown quarterback, and brookfield) i dont feel like Sloat makes this team any better and i feel like he is interchangable with probably 3 quarterbacks in the SWC maybe 4.
Hopefully harrisons injury isnt serious, but even if he plays next week i think brookfield will give them a game. i believe that Masuk’s evil empire will play newtown in the SWC championship in a few weeks
Comment by SWCtruth — October 26th, 2008 @ 10:03 pm
bulldogs5- “I think what happened in this game was a mistake on everyone on the Bunnell defense.”… what would contribute to a new defensive formation against the hammer? why would bunnell change their defense againast it in a big game vs masuk, if they well all those times? i think bunnells defense wasnt what has stopped the hammer in the past, perhaps it was the personnel (ie andy conroy) …
bunnell not being able to stop the run was never included in my post either, so no need for all the examples provided, i know how good bunnells defense has been…

Bunnell had chances to score at least 2 more times. So if you call that Below average that you are clueless.
Id Mausk the better team, yes.Can Bunnell beat them you bet.
Comment by PBL — October 27th, 2008 @ 11:56 am
When Bunnell played well defensively against Masuk, they had good players and good coaches who put them in the right places. I know Andrew C. and while big and strong, he was hardly a factor in 2006 vs. Masuk. Bunnell knows how to stop the hammer except like everyone else, can’t do it when the hammer team is actually better than them. (example Pomperaug in 2003 and 2004 with Mike Kielt and Joe Melillo and Masuk with Norell and Wargo.) Who besides Masuk and Bunnell has even beaten Pomperaug in the last 5 years.

Comment by master of meaningless information — October 27th, 2008 @ 4:44 pm
SteveSmith12 – I know that the intention of your post was not to say that Bunnell can’t defend the run – that was just for all the haters thinking it. The reason Bunnell changed from a 4 man line to a 3 man line is because of Masuk’s ability to move the ball effectively though the air. There have been times that Bunnell has ran a 3 man line in the past, but when the Hammer or any other jumbo formation came up, they would switch to a 4 or 5 man line. They never did in this game, and any team can run effectively on a 3 man line.
I will agree with you, however, on the lack of personnel. Although I am a Bunnell fan, this team does not match up to the teams of the past. Sloat is good, but anyone will tell you he is not as talented as the past 2 Bunnell quarterbacks. However, he has won 19 out of the last 20 games he started. The offensive and defensive lines this year are not even close to what it has been the past 2 years (Farrell and Quarrie were 2 of the best in the state). Besides Harrison, the receivers can’t compare to the last 7 years (going back to E.J. Yearwood). On defense, nothing is the same. Last year, Easley, Jackson and Rosario made one of the best secondaries in the state. The linebackers are missing Guerrero and Zack Arsenault (Arsenault was probably the most underrated player in the state – never missed a tackle or a coverage). The only thing reminiscent of last years defense comes in the form of Oliver Aurelia, who has tremendous talent, playing middle linebacker, but also being able to play on the line.
SWC Truth – A lot of people say that Coach Bruno hides behind Steve Smith, but thats completely wrong. I agree Sloat is not as good as Smith, and although Smith is one of the best ever, he had a lot of people to help him out. 3 out of the 4 receivers he threw the ball to went all-state (Easley, Jackson, Polite), and Stringfellow has 5 touchdowns in 2 state championship games. Sal Aurelia and Jimmy Sloat went 1st team all conference and Farrell and Quarrie went all state. He also had help in the running game, Guerrero being the lightning to Aurelia’s thunder. Not to mention a ferocious defense that held Masuk in check twice and also shutdown an unstoppable Staples team. Don’t just listen to what you read in the papers. SPB called him a “one man wrecking crew”. Yea, he tore up that game, but he had 21 other guys to help him. So everyone stop saying that Bunnell is hiding behind Smith, because no one is, and no one was last year.
Thats why they went 13-0.
But as I previously posted, the wins don’t come from all the talent, it comes from the heart that they have and that they are coached with.
Bunnell will be back.

Comment by RAY BROWN — October 27th, 2008 @ 5:53 pm
bulldogs5–as much as heart matters you cannot say that that is what wins come from…Bunnell’s heart is what won them two state championships the last two years, not the “21 other guys” that you just talked about come on you cant be serious. i know all of these teams have heart but without heart why would you even be playing…every team in the state plays with heart but you cant argue with talent…good teams have it, bad teams dont
I just feel like friday night shows how Craig Bruno is not the coach that people think he is. Bulldog, by listing all of these players you just proved my moint more about how easy it was for bruno to hide these last few years. Once the largest part of his front was gone friday night (harrison), he was exposed. he could do nothing but continue to have sloat lob the ball up to subpar recievers.
all im saying is that no one can argue that bunnell is the bunnell of recent past and i feel like people are giving them too much credit

“not steve smith12″ i can and will name you three teams that beat pomperaugs hammer in the last 5 years, Newtown twice (10-7 in ’06 and 14-13 in ’07) and even Bethel beat them in ’07. that was the year pomperaug was below .500 and seemingly lost the “hammer magic.” it does not always take huge guys up front to stop the hammer, an effective gameplan against it will garner the most success (trust me, a 3 man front with guys standing straight up isn’t stopping masuk’s hammer bunnell, that is a given)….
bulldogs5,”The reason Bunnell changed from a 4 man line to a 3 man line is because of Masuk’s ability to move the ball effectively though the air” is not an acceptable excuse when it comes to hammer defense..i think its pretty obvious when masuks hammer goes in, a few substitutions are made and everyone knows the hammer is in. therefore, bunnell didn’t have to worry about the pass against masuks hammer…
The new turf field at bunnell should be named “Steve Smith Stadium” because of the dynasty he built in ’07. It is well documented of his legendary status, considering how he jumpstarted the program from a 6 or 7 win team to the state’s elite, with back to back swc and state championships…in no way did smith have sloats supporting cast from last year, all of those kids were juniors during smiths senor year magic(easley, guerrero, jon jackson, hopeton, stringellow, not to mention harrison didnt even play). #12 for Bunnell should not be worn by anyone for years to come, Smith put that team on his shoulders, won states and swcs, beat masuk, and christened the spread offense for the bulldogs.
Comment by SteveSmith12 — October 27th, 2008 @ 7:33 pm
I too was at the game, and it was my 3rd time this season I have watched both teams. I have no bias towards either team (my son plays for ND FFld, unfortunatley) so I consider my opion pretty objective. If anyone has seen more than 1 High School Football game they would have seen their is no comparison between Bunnell and Masuk. Masuk is much better thAN Bunnell and without Harrison playing Bunnell had no chance to win that game and believe me when I tell you I am NOT a fan of Masuk at all. Excluding Sloat and Harrison, Bunnell is small, young and have little to no skill players. Offensively they have no running game, no one who can catch a pass, and apparently no place kicker, as Bunnell went for 2 pts. in the 1st qtr. against Masuk down 14-6? Defensivley no one can tackle as it look like a flag football game when Masuk had the ball. SB you can’t honestly think Bunnell is a top 5 team in the state after watching that game. I know Bunnell has been an elite team the past several years but this team doesn’t come close to those teams. Craig is a great guy but unfortunately this years team will not win the SWC and will go out in the first round of the states: if they qualify. In case you haven’t seen Newtown play, they are the best team in the SWC and will prove that come season’s end

SWC Truth – Coach Bruno has never hid behind his players, but he relied on them a lot because of their talent, skills, and play making ability. Whether it was heart or talent or certain players that won them the games, it doesn’t matter. They still have back to back SWC titles and back to back State titles.
We can agree to disagree on this one.
SteveSmith12 – Doesn’t matter what defense they ran or why they ran it – Bunnell lost the game. So lets just let this one go because they already lost.
I will not disagree with you about the real Steve Smith, however. Yes, he was the complete leader of that team and he did put them on his shoulders. He did not carry them, he will tell you that himself. He had a lot of help a long the way. Although, saying he did not have any other play makers is ludicrous. He had plenty of play makers, and a lot of people will tell you that these players did better their junior year rather than their senior year. There was a lot of play makers on that team, but Smith was on a different level that season. He truly was the most dynamic player in the state, and obviously couldn’t be stopped. Both Sloat and Smith had great supporting casts in their title runs, thats why they won the titles. He was the first quarterback to run the spread, but other quarterbacks may have excelled in it as well (his brother Gary along with Shannon James {UMASS and CFL} and Sean Murray from 02-04 with his team of play makers).
Just so you know, #12 was retired.
2 (Staley) 5 (Murray) 12 (Smith) 21 (Jackson) 26 (James) 32 (Easley) have all been retired.

woahhhhhh relax with all the steve smith praise….to say that he turned the program around? bunnell has been good in the swc since 2000, shannon james, sean murray and daryl staley took this program off, the class of 04 took them to the playoffs for the first time ever and the class of 05 most definitly handled its own and took bhs back to the state playoffs that steve smith cost them every game they lost that season whether he fumbled SIX times against brookfield or just getting knocked around his sophmore year he wasnt good then, they should of went with crumpton for a year and if you do recall steve smiths junior year they went 6-4, so that just tells you to stop revolving this program over the “legendary status” of steve smith, if anything chris sloat did it just as good.. you better look at the record books and sloat has been undefeated as a starter til this past week, not exactly something thats easy to do….i think bunnell is gonna get right back into things against brookfield, i played for bruno and if anything i know that he never lets his teams get down on themselves so i expect the dawgs to rebound….AND THE SEASON IS NOT OVER FOR THEM, THEYRE STILL IN 3RD IN CLASS L WITH THE 4TH TEAM HAVING 2 LOSSES.

Oh please, Smith was not superman. The kid got crushed by Stratford 40-8.To bad Smith should of been focused on the game at hand instead of giving interviews to reporters before the game.
If it was not for (I believe) Bristol-Central & Bristol-Eastern playing to a tie on thanksgiving, Bunnell would of been left out in the cold.Meaning not State title for your superman Smith.
Don’t get me wrong Smith was a very good QB, yet don’t make him out to be superman.
Listen Smith was 12-1 & Sloat was 13-0.No mattter how you look at it Sloat gave Bunnell their first ever undefeated season along with a State Title & Bunnell’s highest state ranking ever at the end of a season.Which in my opinion should of been #2 instead of Greenwich.
Now watching Friday nights game Baker is one hell of a QB for Masuk. The kids throws were right on the money. He is got the edge on Sloat for this sole reason.Baker knows how to scramble/roll out.Sloat tends to stay in the pocket more.Baker is the real deal for QB’s this year. This is coming from a Bunnell fan.

I just find it comical how much collective hate bunnell “fans” have for Steve Smith. What this man did for the Bunnell football program was unmeasureable, even though his 52 total tds his senior year do most of the talking. What do bunnell’s fans have against superman, yeah i said it? Alright alright Chris Sloat also won a State Champ and SWc Title, but his supporting cast outduels Smith easily. Once again, all of the receiving weapons on offense were seniors plus mark harrison played. Mario guerrero rushed for 755 yards to help out Sloat’s 667 rushing yards and 13 td’s, while Steve Smith rushed for 1,143 yards and 18 tds alone his senior season. The defense of 2008 was also above 2007, giving up a mere 169 points all season compared to ’07′s 265. Smith was able to chuck it for 2,785 yards and 34 tds, while Sloat is up there, but falls a little short with 2,623 yards and 33 Tds.
Even after being defeated by Stratford on thanksgiving, Smith got right back at it and led Bunnell to two huge upsets en route to the State Championship, showing his “heart,” which seems to be a golden word around the Bunnell campus.

Ray Brown-Masuk and Bunnell are two terrific teams with tremendous talent on both sides of the ball. Their league does have some weak teams in it like all leagues do. Lets give credit to both programs. If I had to rate the two best confernces in the state it would have to be the FCIAC and the SCC. This does not mean they have the top teams this year but the leagues are very competitive.
