Who’s No. 1 now?

|

OK, so Ansonia lost for the first time in nearly three seasons.

OK, so we won’t be getting the battle of unbeatens we thought we’d be getting at Jarvis Stadium next week.

The sun will come up today. I promise, Ansonia fans.

Your team just won’t be No. 1 anymore.

So we move on. And I promise, this was the first question us voters asked ourselves when we first got the score:

Who’s No. 1 now?

Hmmmmmm….

It’s now open season on the top spot. There are a lot of good candidates out there.

So, let’s hear it.

Who’s the No. 1 team in Connecticut now?

Who’s got your back?

Let us know.

We just want to know who’s your No. 1.

We don’t want your No 2s or 3s or 4s.

We don’t want explanations.

Just … the new No. 1.

How about we see how Saturday shakes out?

The gap between New Canaan and New London seemed to be closing last week, and you’d think the coaches/media (hey, where’s my vote?) would move everyone up a notch.

But Darien is, seriously, a team to watch right now. But no one will really stand up and take notice until Thanksgiving Day.

Over Hillhouse, New Canaan and Darien?

Darien and New Canaan are the 2 best teams in the state. Luckily we get to see them play on Thanksgiving, and then again for the MM title.

  21. fb says:

ansonia clearly wasnt the best team in CT all year, so why ask the question of who should be #1 NOW? why not ask “why were we so stupid to keep on voting for ansonia”

  22. HouseFam Fan says:

Hillhouse has the mixture of speed and quickness and power. People overlook their size but i know those guys well they have overcome many obstacles on and off the filed this year. they’ve worked the hardest throughout the season with lifting and practices. they should be number 1 hands down!!!!! who can anyone key on? Bernard Risco at QB…. Brandyn Wright FB/RB… Marvin McClendon RB… Jeremy Moore (All Stater) Tavon Wilkin DE Andrew Lyde DE Leon Davis FB/LB ….. OMg This Group Is The BEst!!!!!

Unfortunately, synergy rules and I had no say in the matter. If it were up to me, I would have been at Newtown-Brookfield.

I explained this to the guys at Newtown. So…

  32. todd says:

People need to give New London some credit. They beat a 8-0 team in Montville without their two best players. No one ever gives this part of CT any credit. There starting qb right now is a Freshman. How many teams can say that their starting qb, who is going to the University of Florida, has been out for the last couple of weeks and they are still winning.

  37. gman says:

JUST SOME RAMDOM THOUGHTS: If you go by strength of schedule then it’s a tossup between New Canaan and Darien. New London winning without their two best players speaks volumes about their program. As good as Brookfield looked against Bunnell, that’s how poor they looked against Newtown. Newtown-Masuk on thanksgiving eve should be a great one. Crosby winning against Ansonia put a huge dent in Bunnells plans to capture antoher state title. MSG has Hillhouse ranked eighth in the tri-state area-the only CT. team mentioned. The loser of the New Canaan-Darien game pays a stiff penalty because they will have to travel to Hillhouse. Like it or not -Ansonia losing has done wonders for the NVL. Can you believe a team as talented as STaples could lose five games this year if Greenwich beats them on thankgiving day. Hope Seymour shows up for thursday big game against Ansonia. Masuk can and will beat Crosby if and when they play. Still believe the SCC is the best football conference followed by the FCIAC-SWC is also very tough especially the top four.

  38. master of meaningless information says:

    Masuk
Their 1st team defense has only given up 51 points through 9 games. This means that the 1st team defense has only played 1/2 to 2/3 of the games that they have played, if you look at the results of the games. The First Team gave up 31 points to Brookfield ( the turning pt. of the game was a deflected pass off a Masuk DB’s shoulder pad into the hands of a Brookfield Reciever who was layed out in the End zone) and 20 points to a Potent Bunnell offense. The statistics of the defensive players would be doubled if they played the whole game. Remember Numbers 30, 34, 17 and 32 when you vote for Post-Season Honors if any SWC Coaches are paying attention to this blog. If Masuk can somehow play Brookfield in the SWC Final ( Go Bethel, Beat Newtown!), they will win 32-8.

  39. Master of Meaningful Information says:

Master of Meaningless Information, who are you comparing this data too? Did you total every others teams 1st defense too?

Even though Brookfield beat Masuk and now Masuk is 8-1 i belive that Masuk is the power house! After studying and recording there games, Masuk has the best Defense through out SWC and CT, and how they dominate teams through there spread offense and score an average of 32 points is amazing!
    Masuk, Monroe is #1

  43. spring football says:

  44. SPB says:

This is only a reflection of this year’s games.

  45. SWC Fan says:

Master of Meaningless Information, one of your strong points about how “good” Masuk’s defense is, is that they gave up 31 points to a “strong” Brookfield offense…Newtown gave up 3, while stopping them at the goaline twice. Back on the topic of this blog i will say New Canaan, New London, Darien in that order…fb, Masuk 2? haha good one

  46. Shea says:

The only thing I can’t stand than an Ansonia fan who is blind with love for his teams is a Masuk fan fan blind with love for his team.

Are you kidding? Masuk at #1? That’s a joke

Hillhouse, followed by a close New London.

  47. swcfan says:

How can you say Masuk Has the best Defense in the SWC when they have given up 120 points and Newtown has given up only 84? News flash…Newtown starters have only played half the game at least 5 games this year (out of 9). Newtown gave up 3 points to Brookfield…3!…Masuk was shredded by the Bobcats. You obviously have not seen the Newtown team play. Masuk is good and there defense is strong but sorry they are not the team or defense Newtown is.

  48. Kenny Chesney says:

SPB. Thanks for the clarification. In that case, your poll will have Newtown ahead of Masuk. By any combination of the subjective and objective, this has to be the case.

  49. SPB says:

I have no problems with your logic,

    Except!

“It’s my poll and I’ll rank how I want to.”
    “Rank how I want to.”
    “Raaaank how I want to.”

“You’d rank your waaaay if the poll was yours, tooooo.”

    “Da-da-da DA-da!”

Ray must be Ansonia at number one after wins against those strong Holy Cross, Torrington, Watertown, Wolcott teams. And only one loss to that tremendous Crosby team.

  52. SWCtruth says:

Hahaha after following this blog, the SWC and SPB for years I would be shocked if he, arguably the biggest Masuk fan on this blog, ranks Newtown higher than the Panthers. Heck I wouldn’t be surprised if he kept Bunnell ahead of the Hawks too hahahaha

  53. Kenny Chesney says:

SPB. Credibilty matters. Expand your horizons to other towns. The Monroe Post’s circulation depends on it.

  54. John Hyman says:

I would have to pick both New London and New Canaan tied for the number one spot.

  55. Will 32 whhs says:

hands down you keep it in the toughest divison in high school football for ct and that will be either new canaan or darien of course

  56. fake Rob says:

    Here’s a question:

We can all agree that if New Canaan wins out, including the FCIAC championship and the MM playoffs, they will get the #1 state ranking. However, if Darien wins out, with the same tasks ahead, beating NC twice, will they get the #1, or will voters be influenced by the fact that New Canaan, as of late, has had the stronger program? The rankings should be on a year-to-year basis, which is why rankings shouldn’t come out until after Week 4 or so. I feel that if Darien goes undefeated, voters will dismiss it as New Canaan not being as strong as previously thought and the general idea that the FCIAC is down this year. Because of last year’s performance, Darien won’t get the same respect as NC in the polls even though they have to go over the same hurdles to get to the same goal.

  57. JustJ0115 says:

  62. PBL says:

SWCtruth just wait till Thanksgiving with the Newtown/Mausk stuff.

Newtown still has to beat Brookfield again in 2 weeks, IF everything pans out.Same with Mausk, they still have to get by a unpredictable Pomeraug team.

  63. D says:

Right now Hillhouse #1. Dominating performance over Hoboken (NJ), #8 in tri-city poll. combination of speed, power makes them the hardest team to beat in CT. Can’t key on any one player. When its all said and done the #1 team at the end of the year will be the champion of Class MM

  64. dave m says:

first off ansonia wasnt the best in the state this year even if they had won this past week…hillhouse number without question they play in one of the toughest conferences in the state the SCC where they week in and week out have a battle.

waitb a minute sam you previously blogged the nvl stunk. i watched the prep-xavier game on t. v.s scc channel and it looked like a j.v. game -compared to what i winessed at the ansonia -crosby game.

  67. RAY BROWN says:

  68. AnsoniaVinny says:

New Canaan is #1 right now
followed by hillhouse and New London and Darien, then Seymour. Can we stop with the Newtown argument Shelton manhandled them. Its all gonna pan out New Canaan is goin to have to beat 2 of the top four probably three times so if they do it then they are #1. New LOndon and Seymour are goin to meet and that will decide that.

  69. Fp Sam says:

Ray I know you have a lot of ct high school football knowledge but to say that prep vs xavier looked like a jv game i know you know that thats not true and your just trying to get me fired up. Your ruining the credibility that you have by saying that. You know better than that and its not true.(and i know preps having a down year) your better than that Ray i thinks its time your give the SCC the respect that it deserves

  72. SWCtruth says:

PBL–my last post was in regard to Kenny Chesneys post a few above me. He posted to SPB about the polls, who should be ranked where blah blah blah. Not comparing the two teams head to head but SPB said that the rankings are based on this years games. Therefore, since Masuk and Newtown haven’t played each other yet (which I think is bull that it happens after the league championship) I would assume Brookfield beats Masuk and Newtown beats Brookfield only leads to Newtown with a higher ranking. But I guess we’ll know tomorrow

  73. voice of reason says:

Ray Brown you know its not a good thing to be ignorant right? I think that brookfield , masuk and newtown would have definetly received media attention without this blog.

I don’t put much stock into how teams “look” on tv. First of all, the point of the game is to score more points than the other team, not to impress viewers. Second, many things do not translate well to tv, especially cheap local tv.

Hoboken (6-3) — An average team at best
    Derby/O’Brien Tech (2-7) — Stinks
    North Haven (3-6) — Stinks
    Branford (5-4) — Average
Lyman Hall (2-7) — Horrible (One of the worst teams I’ve ever seen)
Fairfield Prep (3-5) — Way down
    Jonathan Law (3-6) — Stinks
Shelton (6-3) — Best team they will play in the SCC
    Guilford (3-6) — Stinks
Sheehan (6-3) — Can’t compete against SCC DI
Wilbur Cross (6-3) — Second best team they will play in the SCC

I agree they are a very talented team, but they have played nobody. Be honest???? They are the Ansonia of the SCC. If they played an SCC DI schedule they probably aren’t 9-0.

    good post

  85. johnny ribbs says:

2006 Class SS final Holy Cross 40 Stratford 0

    NVL 7 SWC 1

  86. Dave k says:

    Rob and OJ
If you look at facts and history then you should notice the previously mentioned State playoff results between NVL and SWC teams are class M,L,SS and S. which is the cream of the NVL. Take note that there are some pretty good Class LL,L and MM schools in the SWC that have won championships. The NVL is the little engine that could only in the lower classes.

  87. there is says:

no damn doubt whatsoever that the SWC is better than the NVL this year. It is just a fact that any objective fan would have to agree with. Leave the valley you losers!!!!!!!!!! Care to chime in SPB?

  88. pat says:

great post nvl has buried swc but doesnt that make bunnell s feat even greater there will never be an swc school to repeat as class l champs again nvl fans should hope bruno goes to naugy he will win a championship

  89. Rob says:

    “Leave the valley you losers!!!!!!!!!!”

While this is certainly witty, and filled with exclamation points, this is not an argument.

You proved my point again. You can say the SWC is a better league than the NVL all you want, but you have no facts or results to back this up.

  90. Rob says:

    Dave K,

Your argument about the SWC would make sense if we took you at your word and assumed what you were saying is true about the SWC racking up title trophies in the larger classes. But of course, what you said is not true. Nice train metaphor though.

From 1997 to the present, the following is a listing of the SWC titles in all classes, not just the largest:

    1998 Masuk Class L
    2004 Pomprg Class MM
    2006 Bunnell Class L
    2007 Bunnell Class L

4 titles in the last decade.

Not 4 titles by one school in the last decade.

4 titles by the entire league in the last decade.

Keep trashing the NVL all you want. How could it possibly compete with stats like that?

  91. 0J says:

fellas, I know the facts which I previously posted are hard to doubt, but you have still found a way. However, no one seems to pay attention to the notation that a couple of those teams in the “lower” classes were the SWC Champions meaning they had beaten a Bunnell or Masuk throughout the course of that season. Also, Johnny Ribbs, you only cited three schools that have ever won state titles in the SWC since its formation in 1996 and said that one school has carried the NVL. However, Ansonia, Seymour, HC, and Woodland have all one titles in that time span more than one in the case of Ansonia, Seymour, and Woodland. Also, Masuk is the Atlanta Braves of HS football with only one title and so many playoff appearances including their collapse against East Lyme in 03.

  92. joe says:

facts shmacts, you can use facts to prove anything that is remotely true……NVL vs SWC???? really????? this is the argument now??

i love all the intelligent responses from all the nvl haters….”leave the valley losers!!!!!” putting extra exclamation points doesnt help get your point across. whatever that may be.

“the nvl is the little engine that could racking up titles in the lower classes” by this logic then shouldnt the swc be racking up titles if its better???

4 titles in the last decade. hmmm, if they keep “racking them up” at this rate. how will these schools ever make room for all these trophies in their trophy cases???

  93. Dave k says:

two class L titles mean more than ten class S titles.

  94. deify says:

Just thought I would chime in here (and please don’t question my credentials. I have been a HS fan for longer than most of you have been alive!)…..the SWC is better than the NVL this year. I have seen all the major players involved in this argument. Cheers!

  95. bigmikect says:

lets get the thread over 100 posts with a prediction, seymour 20 ansonia 12.

Congrats Bigmikect. You get yourself a set of steak knives.

  97. gman says:

From top to bottom the best football league in our area is as follows. I have seen them all!!

    1. SCC

    2. FCIAC

    3. SWC

    4. NVL

My opinion is based on this year only. Masuk, New Canaan-Darien-Hillhouse are the best teams. Hamden-Ansonia-Seymour are a notch below. Then comes Brookfield-Bunnell- Crosby and Newtown. The class MM is the toughest STATE CHAMPIONSHIP to win!!!

  98. A-Rod says:

SteveSmith12 is a fool. Stop implying that Bunnell is a joke or that they’re nothing without Smith. He was a great player for the Bulldogs. Enough about him. Murray was great, Staley was great, Sloat is great, Bruno’s great, Easley was great, Polite was great. They’ve had great teams with and without Steve, they’ve had bad teams with and without him.

Cheshire will win the LL state championship. They play a tough schedule and have a great quarterback.

Please scratch Seymour from my list of top teams. They are highly overated-I doubt if they would win two games in the SCC Division one. They would finish second in Division two behind Hillhouse.

“two class L titles mean more than ten class S titles.”

When you’re comparing apples to apples (L team vs L team) and oranges to oranges (S team vs S team), how does your statement even make sense?
