Seymour-Ansonia: Who do you like?

ANSONIA (8-1)

.

.
SEYMOUR.jpgSEYMOUR (9-0)

.

What do you think? Who do you like? Will this be Ansonia’s first back-to-back loss since… since… (hey anybody know that?) or will Paul Sponheimer suffer one more crazy defeat before he rides off into the sunset?

Who’s going to run for 100 yards? Ansonia’s Tristan Roberts? Seymour’s Mike Oseicki? Which team’s going to make the most critical mistake?

Will the game be postponed? (It’s raining cats and dogs out there!) And if it is postponed, will MSG ever come back to the Valley to broadcast a football game again?

If it isn’t postponed, who will be more affected by the weather?

Answers! We want answers!!!!

  1. Cats 1 says:

    Seymour 21 Ansonia 13

  2. ANSONIA says:

Roberts run wild over the Wildcats of Seymour. Not even a game. 100 yards would only be a minimum for the kid. Ansonia wins big after loss.

    Ansonia- 49
    Seymour- 14

  3. Rob says:

With MSG filming, two Top 10 teams who are huge rivals playing with the NVL title and playoff seeding at stake….there will be 1500 people there. I am calling it now. This is a mistake to play this game. There are literally thousands of people who would have went to this game in good weather but now will not.

And don’t give me “If people cared they would go.” The people that truly care will go. It is the thousands of casual fans and curious people from outside the Valley that planned on going but now will not. I feel bad for everyone involved, including myself who has to stand in the rain.

Maybe I will be wrong about the crowd, I hope so.

PS Ansonia wins close and ugly.

  4. The Den says:

Ansonia/Seymour doesn’t get any better in the Valley. If you can’t get up for this game you don’t have a pulse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. CP3 says:

Ansonia was exposed as mortal last week. Seymour pounds the ball, running their big back all night long.

Weather looks bad. Seymour wins 14-6.

  6. johnny ribbs says:

Rob, should we wait until the spring to play the game to ensure 6K? It’s football my man!

I dont really care how things look on MSG, I dont really need to compare manhood with NJ and LI teams. Who really watches on Sunday AM anyway.

This is Valley Football at its finest. Enjoy it!

  7. SWCtruth says:

If Ansonia wins we can take RAY off suicide watch…If they lose…oh boy

  8. PBL says:

Was going if it was good weather, but seeing its a cold rain forget it.I’ll watch the replay sunday night in MSG.

    Ansonia 20 Seymour 13

  9. one time says:

Seymour wins this one for Coach Spoony!

    Wildcats 20
    Chargers 14

  10. hamden football says:

Close game, but Seymour squeaks one out. I’m not sure of Ansonia knows how to deal with adversity, since they haven’t really had to do it in years. Roberts and Osiecki both go over 100 yards.

  11. valleyfootball26 says:

Is the Ansonia / Seymour game rained out tonight?

  12. joe says:

it pains me to say this and i hope im wrong. but seymour will win this game. the same way crosby did. keeping ansonia’s defense on the field and tiring them out.

anyone who was at the crosby game saw that roberts was on the bench for most of the 4th quarter with leg cramps. thats what happens when you run someone 40 times and ask him to cover the best WR on a pass heavy team. and the result was the first loss in 36 games

hopefully brockett learns from his mistakes and spells tristan more on offense. dobbs is a more then capable backup and should see more time to keep roberts fresh. but i just don’t see it seymour wins a close one grinding it out on he ground

  13. Eugene says:

    Seymour – 78
    Ansonia – 2

  14. Fp Sam says:

If Ansonia loses and loses a playoff spot we may never hear from Ray and his ludacris outrages ever again.
    GO SEYMOUR

  15. master of meaningless information says:

    Ansonia 35 Seymour 7

  16. delayed? says:

Is the game delayed? I can’t find it online on internet radio stations.

  17. Wildcat Pride says:

Seymour will pull out the win. They’re coming in confident knowing that Ansonia can be beaten, and they have added motivation since it’s Spoony’s last game at the Ansonia field. The weather may not be good, but that should only make this game more fun to watch. Seymour wins 27-20.

  18. Remmy says:

Just got back from Nolan Field.

    Osiecki 21
    Ansonia 33

    Turning point in the game:

Ansonia was up by 6 (27-21) in Seymour territory. Roberts fumbles on first down. Seymour recovers. Seymour fumbles on first down. Ansonia recovers and eventually scores. Can’t stop Tristan or Moore. Even Dobbs had a score and a big run. Awesome, awesome game.

This was my first time watching Osiecki. Kid’s a beast.

  19. butch says:

I JUST MADE A PROMISE TO MYSELF AFTER SEEING THE SEYMOUR-ANSONIA FOOTBALL GAME THIS EVENING. I WILL NEVER GO TO ANOTHER NVL GAME AGAIN. IF SEYMOUR IS ONE OF THE BEST TEAMS IN CT. THEN OUR STATE SHOULD GIVE UP HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL. NO PASSING GAME, NO KICKING GAME, NO RECEIVERS, NO BLOCKERS AND NO DEFENSE. THEY HAD ONE GOOD PLAYER ON THEIR TEAM. IF I HAD TO COMPARE SEYMOUR TO OTHER TEAMS IN OTHER LEAGUES I FEEL THEY ARE COMPARABLE TO WESTHILL IN THE FCIAC, NORTH HAVEN IN THE SCC AND BETHEL IN THE SWC

  20. Remmy says:

The haters were out in full force at the game but didn’t say much when the clock ran out.

Best game I’ve seen all year. Period.

  21. gman says:

Congratulations to Ansonia for beating Seymour and qualifying for the S State Championship. Maybe I caught Seymour on an off night but that team had a lot of shortcomings for a team thats undefeated. Very one dimensional with no passing game.

  22. SWCtruth says:

    YAY RAY YAY RAY!

  23. hamden football says:

Is it just me, or did Sponheimer throw his entire bench under the bus?

  24. Dave k says:

“We played 13 kids tonight. It’s the kids on the sidelines that didn’t give us the opportunity to get somebody in there and get a breather. They wore us down.”
This quote from the Seymour head coach speaks volumns as to why small NVL schools like Seymour and Ansonia could not compete week in and week out in a large school league like the SCC D1. Seymour has about 35 players dressed for varsity yet in week 10 only 13 see action.

  25. Rob says:

There is literally nothing that could happen at this point that would give Ansonia or the NVL any respect on here. Ray Brown has disturbed everyone to the point of insanity. If Seymour won, Ansonia would have been laughed off this board for losing two in a row. Ansonia wins, so Seymour must be terrible.

If it was a 14-7 game, everyone would say the two teams were sloppy on offense. If it was a 49-42 game, everyone would say they play no defense. Ansonia just beat the team that sports writers who cover hs football for a living determined to be the 4th best team in CT.

But Seymour has no passing game? First of all, they did throw the ball a little. They actually had a huge play called back because of a dumb penalty. Secondly, this is CT. This is not west Texas or Florida. How many team have dynamic passing attacks? Probably twenty or so teams truly throw the ball on a level that would impress anyone. You can be successful in CT by running the ball well and playing good defense. That’s what Seymour does well.

  26. RAY BROWN says:

there are two things that are certain year in and year out———–christmas is on the 25th of december and ansonia will beat seymour-check the records.lots of swc players in attendance i guess they wanted to watch a real football game.cp3-saw some cromwell people there also–they looked pale white after game. You have to go a long way to find the last time ansonia lost two in a row.How did your nite go CATS1?

  27. Cats 1 says:

That was an exciting game last night. Ansonia played very well. I thought losing to Crosby would have taken more out of them. They seemed focused and ready. Keep your head up Seynmour, bigger things ahead of you.

  28. hs football fan says:

i’m tempted to just call you an idiot and end my post with that, butch…but for the sake of some of the more knowlegeable posters, i’ll continue.

spoony knew coming in he wouldn’t be able to throw on ansonia…tristan roberts and tyrell moore (#s 1 and 3) are two of the best DBs ansonia has ever had and seymour has never been known for their speed (hard-nosed kids who succeed with heart and a strong work ethic)…and then there’s the small point of seymour being very successful last night on 3rd down conversions by simply running oseiski out of the wildcat.

anyone that follows ct football knew that ansonia was the favorite in this game (seymour up only 7-0 late vs. wilby, crosby self-destructing against them, ansonia making critical mistakes throughout last week’s loss, etc.). i would be very surprised if seymour comes within 2 tds of new london…without ansonia’s many fumbles last night, this game could have gotten out of hand.

  29. surprise says:

agree with a few of the above posts. This game was competitive with kids giving their all but the offenses were very one dimentional. The seymour D keyed the run and still got trampled. Makes you wonder how Seymour was undefeated. I would say both of these teams are top 7-12 in the state at best.

  30. RAY BROWN says:

ROB-IM SURPRISED AT YOU,SEYMOURS SUCCESS HAS ALWAYS BEEN PREDICATED ON THE PASS,ANSONIA ADJUSTED DEFENSIVELY IN THE SECOND HALF AND MADE SEYMOUR THROW DEEP WHICH PLAYS INTO ANSONIAS HANDS
BECAUSE OF THEIR SPEED.NOW ITS THE POINT WHERE SEYMOUR COACH IS COMPLAINING THAT HE ONLY HAS 13 PLAYERS.A LOT DIFFERENT WHEN YOU CANT DRAW FROM 3 TOWNS ANYMORE AND YOU HAVE TO PLAY WITH ALL SEYMOUR KIDS.

  31. Spanky says:

I’ve never sen Seymour win a big game outside of conference. On another note, somebody awhile back posted that Masuk had a better program than New Canaan. Are you serious? Masuk has a bigger enrollment, plays in a weaker conference, and does not have nearly as many championships as New Canaan. Comparing Masuk to New Canaan is like comparing the University of Central Florida to the University of Oklahoma.

  32. gman says:

Two things happened in the Seymour-Ansonia game that surprised me. #l Ansonia trying an onside kick up 12 points with three minutes remaining in the game. Seymour almost ran it back for a touchdown. #2. Seymour taking a knee down twelve with 1:25 left in the game on the six yard line. Was I seeing things or can someone with a lot more knowledge about these two teams explain this strategy to me.

  33. gman says:

TO High School Football Fan—good post and I agree with you. However, How could Seymour ever be ranked the fourth best team in the state of CT. Something is wrong with the system. If Ansonia did not turn the ball over as much a they did it could have been embarrassing. As a follower of Ansonia football this is a good team-not in the class of teams that they usually produce.

  34. Curious says:

Can someone help me out with the quote below? Maybe it’s taken out of context, but is he actually placing blame on kids he didn’t put into the game??

“There was nothing wrong with the kids that played football on this football field that played for Seymour,” said Seymour coach Paul Sponheimer, whose team fell to 9-1. “We played 13 kids tonight. It’s the kids on the sidelines that didn’t give us the opportunity to get somebody in there and get a breather. They wore us down.”

  35. SPB says:

He’s talking about his bench players not working hard enough to get on the field to help his starters, who were gassed at the end of the game trying to stop Ansonia’s last drive.

He’s referring to Ansonia when he says “They wore us down.

  36. Rob says:

The Seymour qb was not taking a knee towards the end of the game.

It was a bad exchange with the center and he was afraid of the turnover so he just sort of fell on it/went down.

  37. CP3 says:

I know there were Cromwell people in attendance Ray. Don’t you worry about us.

Cromwell will be in the title game. Will the Chargers?

  38. PBL says:

There was nothing wrong with the kids that played football on this football field that played for Seymour,” said Seymour coach Paul Sponheimer, whose team fell to 9-1. “We played 13 kids tonight. It’s the kids on the sidelines that didn’t give us the opportunity to get somebody in there and get a breather. They wore us down.”

Such a bold statement to say about your non starters. He as the head coach who’s job it is to make sure all his players are prepared to play in any game. Not just his 13 beloved players.

  39. Michael says:

That quote by Spoony was just weird. Maybe he was frustrated. But what was the point of him saying that? Calling out his own JVs. I had to read that quote about four times because I could not believe it. I have to talk to people I know connected to the Seymour program and find out what the heck that was about.

  40. master of meaningless information says:

I will be in front of the TV on Sunday morning to watcht the Ansonia-Seymour game. I could not make it to the game last night and can’t wait to see how good Roberts and Osieki are.

  41. kris1 says:

Ansonia was not attempting to onside kick. Bilodeau was attempting to squib the kickoff, but caught a cramp during his approach and muffed it.

Seymour did not take a knee late in the game. They spiked the ball to stop the clock.

Seymour is a good football team. Ansonia is just better. Yes, they are one-dimensional, but that one player is a GREAT player. Osiecki NEVER comes off the field and plays his ass off. He didn’t get help from his QB (who has been pretty solid all season) or his O-line. Ansonia deserves credit for taking away what Seymour is good at this season, churning out big yardage on the ground. We saw it with Ansonia last season. When you have a kid that can move the chains on the ground you don’t have to throw until the other team forces you to. Ansonia made adjustments at half-time, locked Seymour’s receivers down, and won the battle in the trenches. Ansonia also had more weapons to utilize. Is Seymour a GREAT football team? No, but who is this season? Passing judgement on Seymour after seeing one game is stupid. They are a good team, Ansonia is just better. Ansonia made adjustments and capitalized on miscues.

  42. Curious says:

I thought maybe I was the only person who read it that way. If nothing else, these 13 kids don’t prepare themselves every week. You have kids who have been busting their behinds since August, spending their weeks holding blocking dummies and getting beat up by the starters, only to be called out by the coach out of frustration.
I’m sure Ansonia has more depth, and I’m sure that’s frustrating. But as a coach he certainly had the “opportunity” to “give a kid a breather”, he chose not to.

  43. RAY BROWN says:

too bad spoony————develop your kids so they can contribute -ansonia does and they had as many players as seymour.look at the w—-lost records down thru the years when these teams have met——–even the games seymour won which werent many-they had to hang on to win.

  44. chris says:

Ok everyone on the blog, where do we stand on the NVL now? Is it just the same parity we see in the SWC or SEC Division I?

  45. John says:

Hey Ray see can’t wait to see that mighty crosby team play masuk I’ll spot you 20 points.Thank god ansonias in s.

  46. gman says:

I just think the Seymour coach was frustrated with the whole situation. If he had to do it over again I’m sure he wouldn’t have said those remarks about his subs. Putting that aside-In my opinion Seymour is not a good football team. One player does not make a good team. The kids played hard and deserve a lot of credit-but let’s be honest-Who have they beaten. When you have no passing game in this age of football you can never compete against half-way decent teams. Am I mistaken when I say that Seymour only completed one pass all night. If I’m wrong than I sincerely apologize.

  47. butch says:

Please tell us which Sportswriters selected Seymour as the Fourth best team in Connecticut. Have they seen Seymour play or are they just voting on their record. I have now seen Seymour play 10 times over the past twenty years. They are O and 10. I plan to take in the SEYMOUR-WILBY game next year hoping for better results. The most inept passing game I have seen in the past thirty years.

  48. tj says:

John, I’ll take some of that action. Crosby is Bunnell on steroids. I don’t think there is more dangerous, explosive, potent offense in CT. In order try to contain them, a team has to use to their most talented and athletic players on both sides of the ball. Not many teams have the depth or where-with-all to do that.

  49. MarkB says:

Kennedy in the NVL championship pretty much puts a clincher on the fact that the NVL is a joke.

  50. bigmikect says:

im gonna reserve ALL my comments until after the playoffs are complete.until then these arguements about whos as good as who is useless.after so and so team loses in the playoffs, lets see who really is the king of ignorance defending their team that just lost by 30.nuff said

  51. RAY BROWN says:

ill take the 20 john———pomperaug covered it——and theres rumors that crosby players-are you ready?——–have beards

  52. master of meaningless information says:

I agree with a comment posted earlier on this blog. If Masuk meets Crosby in the playoffs, they definetly have to play their best athletes in the defensive backfield. This will mean that Cosmedy and Conte will have to play both ways the entire game but so be it.

  53. John says:

Maybe Seymour will let Masuk use some of there bench players. As far as Crosby being Bunnell on steroids, which one of there athletes are going to RUTGERS.Hey Ray what you don’t get is Pomperaug would beat crosby.Stay in the two small divisions and nvl would do ok,remember when seymour goes up against teams like staples what happens.By the way how does bunnell do when they play staples. And ansonia lets not forget darien beaten them twice.Kennedy in nvl finals enough said.

  54. Dave k says:

So you live in the Valley, you have Comcast as your cable provider (they replaced tele-media aka valley cable who used to do a great job on the high school foot ball game of the week),you might pay $150 a month like I do and yet you can’t get the MSG replay of the ansonia/seymour game or for that matter most of the UCONN football games on ESPNU.

  55. Eugene says:

so how did wolcott beat crosby, a team who barely squeaks past average nvl teams like torrington and watertown?

  56. come on guys says:

Masuk will crush crosby. come on fellas lets be serious.

  57. crosby says:

Will crosby even make the play offs?

  58. RAY BROWN says:

MARK-GO WATCH THEM PLAY-THEN GO HOME APPLY THE PRO-ACTIVE AND WONDER IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT.

  59. ansonia says:

RAYBROWN. your comments are thoughtless and derogatory toward other teams. You do this to make my team look better when that is simply not needed. It is weak and I would have thought you would have learned in second grade that you shouldn’t be so pathetic knocking other others to feel better about yourself. If you continue these moronic rants please don’t mention your affiliation to AHS football. Go Chargers!

  60. Dave k says:

    Ray Brown
get real a 5-5 team in the NVL championship game. You are the one who who should wonder what he is talking about. The NVL is a joke. who would waste their time going to see 5-5 team play a 9-1 team for a championship. At least the FCIAC and the SWC use some logic and get winning teams if their championship game.

  61. master of meaningless information says:

It will be Newington or Crosby for the final spot. Newington plays Hartford Bulkley on Monday night.

  62. David says:

The NVL needs to change their playoff system if Kennedy is in the final. Have they beaten Ansonia in the last 40 years? In any other league Kennedy is looking at 1 or 2 wins. I have seen them play twice this year and they looked disorganized and small but yet they have won 5 in a row in this sad,sad league. I think East Haven or Derby would beat them.

  63. RAY BROWN says:

dave -if its such a sad league why did u go see them twice?AGAIN THE NVL HAS MORE CLASS STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS THAN ANY OTHER LEAGUE.AS FOR THE DARIEN LOSSES THEY PLAYED A 7-3 ANSONIA TEAM-HAS DARIEN WON ANY GAMES SINCE?

  64. Dave k says:

    ray
when is the last time you went some where south of Division street. Darien is 10-0 and ahead of Ansonia in the polls. Class S and SS title are nice but the real competion is in MM L and LL classes.

  65. Rob says:

The NVL should not have a title game because they don’t need one. All the teams play each other, so best regualr season record should suffice as the champion.

Kennedy made the title game because the NVL is split into two divisions and all the good teams are in the same division. Somebody had to win the weak division, and it happened to be Kennedy.

I think sometimes people on here think there are only four leagues in CT, the four leagues that the Post covers. I have said this many times. If you think Kennedy would struggle badly in the FCIAC, the SCC, or the SWC you are entitled to that opinion. But to say they would win 2 games in ANY other league in the state just makes no sense at all. It is an exaggeration that strips away any validity to anything else you say.

  66. Dino says:

Rob, you seem to make some pretty compelling arguments on behalf of the NVL. However, for the sake of some fellow readers, could you possibly dumb down your comments so that all people on this blog can follow along? In the future, when making an argument, please refrain from using words such as suffice, entitled and validity and remember- it’s not an argument if you don’t use CAPS LOCK and multiple exclamation points!!!!!

Being a Tech school follower, I am a bit disappointed that Cheney Tech gets no love in the polls. They have thoroughly dismantled such storied programs as Wright Tech/Stamford Academy and Capital Prep, without so much as a pity vote from any of the state writers. The CSC is a stellar conference in which Kennedy would have a hard time winning 9 games. The newly formed league is certainly living up to its much maligned motto “We may not beat you in football, but we can certainly overcharge you after we repair your car or fix your toilet”.

  67. RAY BROWN says:

DAVE—DO SOME RESEARCH———CHECK DARIENS RECORD THE LAST FIVE YEARS LET ME KNOW WHAT IT IS.THEY STRUGGLED WITH ST.JOES-THEYRE A DECNT TEAM
BUT NOT THE BEST IN STATE .

  68. RAY BROWN says:

I suppose that is as bad as struggling with Wilby Wolcott and Watertown. BEWARE THE W’s OF THE NVL!

  69. Zeke says:

Are there tickets still available for the NVL title game?

  70. ray brown says:

I have to admit it .I am Jack Hunts secret lover!!
