New Canaan wins, Central wins, Foran wins, Ludlowe wins, Greenwich wins, Shelton wins… as we all lay exhausted, full of stuffing from Thanksgiving Day dinner here’s a quick recap on all everything that went down yesterday.
The CIAC, by the way, has spoken. The state playoff pairings have been confirmed. Brookfield will host Avon at Danbury’s Crotty Stadium. Masuk will host Weaver Windsor at Trumbull. Update: Forgot to add this change: the Darien-Hillhouse game will be played at West Haven High School’s Ken Strong Stadium.
Here’s the playoff story: Bunnell’s playoff hopes dashed
Saturday Update: Here is the CIAC 2008 playoff page.
And could a title game between Darien and New Canaan go back to Boyle Stadium. Though reconstruction is supposed to begin soon, it might happen if the two teams reach the Class MM championship game. Read more here.
Incidentally, I always understood that teams could not play a state championship game at a field on which it had already played during the regular season. Either way, I doubt this will happen.

I saw some folks today walking around with Bunnell apparel at Hawley Lane. Sucks for them. Also sucks that Crosby didn’t get in but had a hell of a year…somewhat, I guess. I was looking forward to watching Crosby play Masuk in the states.
I was at the Ansonia game yesterday. My first time watching Naugy this year. Their RB is a tough kid. Played well. No passing game whatsoever. Naugy managed to hold on to the ball for most of the game. They kept Ansonia’s offense off the field but couldn’t stop the offense from scoring when they WERE on the field. Ansonia opened the game with two fumbles on their first two drives, which they lost both.
I’m a huge New Canaan fan….but, to all you FCIAC guys who sadly say they would rather win an FCIAC title over a state title…you are ridiculous.
If Darien gets by Hillhouse and then beats New Canaan on December 6….what would you rather have..New Canaan’s “league” title or Darien’s “state” title?
It is a no-brainer.
Again, I hope New Canaan wins all of its games..however..this just proves what I have been saying for the last 25 years.
If Darien wins the states….Darien had the better season. They play the most important game LAST! States are the ultimate prize! And, no..it’s just not a year-by-year thing. You think people in other states even know what an F-C-I-A-C is? LOL. Of couse not, but everybody knows what a STATE title is.
Go Rams!
Masuk isn’t hosting Weaver they’re hosting Windsor at Trumbull.

I think there was only two things on the mind of nc and darien coaches before that game started. First how nice it would be to beat your rival for the one seed in M and number two with a win you avoid playing a dangerous hillhouse team in round one. Secondly as an Ansonia fan but not a fan of the way the NVL is run and some of the teams that constantly underachieve in the league in football how does wolcott lose to Holy Cross after they got what i have heard was an upset of St Bernard over Montville, A game like that makes you say what a weak league it looks like to outsiders.
Oh, Weaver, Windsor… it’s all the same thing :) LOL.
(Thanks Paul. Fixed.)
Congratulations to Crosby Quaterback David Gondek, 39 Touchdown passes in a single season, Remarkable!
Where is the Darien/Hillhouse game being played?????
The Post has it at Veterans Memorial Field?????
CIAC site has it being played at West Haven H.S. which is Ken Strong Stadium????
http://www.casciac.org/scripts/fb_playoffs08.cgi
So which one is it.
Thinking about going to that game or maybe Masuk/Windsor.Yet I think Masuk will blow Windsor out.
Darien/Hillhouse looks to be the best game that is like not a 100 miles away to go see.
AnsoniaVinny-
I agree with you 100% about the Darien-NC coaches’ mindset going into that game. 1- beat rival for #1 seed. 2- avoid Hillhouse.
An FCIAC title is just an added bonus that happened to come with the win.
RAY: I want to tell you that I find your reveling in the shattered dreams of young men sickening.
But I have a policy of not feeding the troll.
Hillhouse will lose to Darien 28-7. Darien has a better coach. Hillhouse has a huge line and some great skill players but they lack discipline. Their special teams are not very good. Cross would have won the Turkey Bowl Game if they did not incur a questionable holding penalty when they drove down to the nine yard line with a few minutes left in the game. High School Referees love to throw the yellow flag and take the game in their own hands becuase they had miserable childhoods. They also love to throw a perfect underhand spiral to the sidelines when they change balls. The refs should let the kids play the game unless the penalty is totally obvious.
Darien-Hillhouse will be plaed at Veteran Memorial Field.
Kudo’s to Masuk for moving game to Trumbull high’s field turf surface. The CIAC should consider requiring all Semi-final game being played on Field turf surfaces. This time of year all the grass fields are in very bad shape. There are plenty of field turf surfaces in the state now the make this a requirement.
im not revelling in anything -im making a point that losing to such a pathetic team will hurt hamdens psych going into cheshire game-one that hamden didnt want to face again—-
So when are we going to pronounce Class L the Masuk Invitational? This blog is going to overflow if they lose in one of the weakest L classes in a long time!
I believe that after this thanksgiving the polls are going to be tough to figure out. After that horrible brookfield score against a bad bethel team and masuks blowout of a good newtown team i can easily say masuk should be ranked higher. i also beleive that hillhouse is very overrated being undefeated in the weakest league of all. they havnt beaten anyone good and i think a 1 loss team could jump them in the polls. also good job new cannon you secured ur 1 spot.
Hillhouse has “great skill players” but “lacks discipline”? Hmmm…I wonder why you would say that, MoMI? I suppose Darien plays intelligent, disciplined football? Reminds me of the things people were saying as New Canann stepped out of its chartered motor coach 8 years ago before they got slaughtered by Bloomfield (although I don’t mean to imply this Hillhouse team has that kind of talent).
And as someone above already pointed out, the CIAC says the game is at West Haven HS, not Veterans Memorial Field.
Missing my HS Football this Saturday morn, I got to thinking if Greenwich regrets it decision to play St Joes Montvale. In hindsight a game against Norwalk who had an open date and only played 10 games this year may have been wiser. A victory over Norwalk (not assured)would have got them comfortably in States. Ohh ifs and buts…
One other thing, to me it looks like Crosby and Bunnell are two worthy teams that got bad breaks due to scheduling.
If the NVL let their teams loose, perhaps Crosby could have played West Haven who had an open date, a victory would have garnered them 10 more points and entry into States.
For Bunnell, it’s a shame that the SWC had its two time defending SWC & State Champ play against newcomer Oxford (hello, not fair to either team), a game against New Milford would have been wiser and with a win, they would be looking at a rematch against Masuk, ohh the theatre!
Oh well, we’ll have to be satisfied with the CCC invitational in Class L.
roto-
are you the lefty softball player who bats like .850? I pitched against you.
Bloomfield that year was stacked….New Canaan was just overmatched. I don’t think any NC fan had high hopes going into that game. People were really saying that? It must have been somebody just reaching for something to give NC a glimmer of hope or in game preview by the media…possibly detailing a percieved NC advantage. Don’t pay any attention to that stuff.
So roto, I think we are past the PC police era (praise the Lord!). There were so many penalties I could barely listen to the darn game (delay of games, holding, blocking below the waist, horse collaring, push in the backs, PI, you name it they called it, the game went on for 3 hours!!) not to mention the 2 blown punt snaps by HH and coughing up an interception that was returned for a TD. Lack of discipline?? Really a failure to execute.
By the way the word “athletic” is banned from the blog, instead of being succinct, please describe a player as fast, with extreme body control (or similar phrasing).
C-mon ROTO-those comments about New Canaan aren,t fair and you know it. One thing that I have learned about New Canaan High School throughout the years-they are not snobs-they appreciate good competition and applaud the other team whether they win or lose. Athletes don’t care what kind of financial background you come from-they just want to compete.
I will say that MASTER OF MEANINGLESS made some very poor and untrue statements regarding Darien and Hillhouse. For one, Hillhouse has a very good football team with loads of talent and good coaching. No Hillhouse team I know ever lacked discipline in any sport. They always come to play hard and fair. Darien has also been a classy athletic school. Stop trying to incite bad feelings on this blog.
Roto, you’re out of line in attempting to lay some kind of class-war “gotcha” on MoM’s comments about Hillhouse and New Canaan.
if anything its not the hillhouse team that lacks discipline its the fans—why else would fans be subject to metal detector shakedowns before games at bowen field?
Ansonia footbal…It’s enough already. Obvios easy conference which leads to a maximum of 2 losses every year. The Boise State of Ct. high school football. Give next door neighbor Derby a ton of credit. They’ve accepted the challenge of the SCC. Guarantee it wouldn’t be a yearly waltz to the stata tourney every year if Ansonia had the guts and made the move. I tolerated it, but now it’s obvious and silly. Ansonia is competative in other sports, give the kids a real challenge. By the way, early season scrimmages don’t count ( kids getting into football shape, coaches trying various lineups and plays ). Impressed…used to be, not any more!
Ray brown
FYI… NDWH had some kids hurt earlier in the season thus they lost some tough games. They finished the season with those kids back and were a much better team the only thing pathetic is some one who would refer to a high school team as such.
dave k notre dame sucked
rhino ansonia ended derbys football program–and fyi ansonia has played in every class playoff at least once-LL-M-SS-S-ANY OYHER PROGRAM DONE THAT —-WHO SAYS THE SCC IS AS STEP UP?THE LEAGUE STINKS IN FOOTBALL
Rhino, don’t give Derby credit for playing in the SCC. They have been beginning to get out of the conference for years now. They can’t compete in the SCC DII, how are they going to be successful in the NVL. So, they would go from winning 2 or 3 games to winning maybe 4….Maybe? I heard they are petitioning the NVL again for entry in 2009, along with another school who I won’t name at this time. In my opinion it’s not a good move for either parties. What you also fail to realize is the fact that there are other sports that affect a move to another conference. Ansonia does not offer most of the secondary sports that the other SCC schools do. So, it causes scheduling problems in those sports. It also costs the school money, which is a major issue with the Board of Ed. Ansonia has neither the interest nor the funding to start up other sports programs. In fact, there is talk of them cutting freshmen athletics for 2009, because of budget issues. Bottom line, it’s easier said then done.
Your statement:
“By the way, early season scrimmages don’t count ( kids getting into football shape, coaches trying various lineups and plays ). Impressed…used to be, not any more!”
This statement is exactly why Ansonia football is so successful and many other programs are not. Ansonia kids are already in shape, the lineups are pretty set by the end of spring, and the playbook is simple; tackle the guy with the ball on defense, score more points then the other team on offense. Don’t worry your not alone, the people in Ansonia aren’t impressed anymore either. They expect to win every scrimmage, every game, every year. The faces may change, but the expectation are always high.
The Derby schedule is not difficult. That is not the reason for their recent decline. I know they have one of the easist of the SCC schedules, but they should not be held up as an example.
This is also not a year in which to tout the strength of the SCC.
shelton 54 derby 12 as it said the most points scored by shelton in a hundred years derby should just pack it in to avoid embaressment for god knows how many more years
kris 1 —good blog——but derby will have to play the murderous nvl basketball schedule—–the nvl will not allow them to play patty cake outside the league schedule like the scc does
Ray do me a favor don’t talk about the NDWH team like that. (my best friend is on the NDWH team and that really pisses me off) They clearly don’t stink they held Hamden to 7 points and won the game. Also dont call out the Derby guys on the prep staff they all were great guys and great coaches. Ray you are a disgrace to Ct highschool football youre a loser and find something better to do with your miserable life then make fun of good kids who had a tough year, and calling out great people and coaches from the prep staff. Youre a loser RAY and i think 95% of the people on this blog would agree with me.
Ive never heard someone talk out of their ass more than Ray Brown. And I’ve heard plenty of presidential speeches in the last 8 years
hate to jump ahaead with all these great games on deck, but i was looking at the posts thanksgiving insert for this year(great job by the way mr bowley),and couldnt help but notice and think of the potential rosters for the hall of fame game. imagine sloat, quinn,o”meara,or baker to harrison, chris evans, ondash, kosnik,or matt grant?downright scary.for some reason it seems like they arent too many darien, staples or greenwich kids on the team,i wonder why.how bout dj morrell paving the way for a chris hines, nick cortese, alex almonte or a dysenchuck? frfld county could be pretty awesome, especially thru the air, nhaven countys got some real good talent too w roberts, osiecki(if he plays),brandon wright, jake white etc. for some reason i might be more excited this year then in years past,i know july is a while away,
all you fp bloggers-get ready for basketball season——those great guys from derby are the same ones that abandoned the program at derby and left for prep thinking they would be more succesful—————-SURPRISE. IM SORRY YOUR BEST FRIEND PLAYED FOR ND-HONEST I AM
Ray
help me with this bit of Ansonia history. They played up three times in LL in 78 & 79 and lost both times to Amity and Newington. In M once and beat Seymour (big deal). Is the CIAC site wrong? Is there a Ray Bronw site that has a different result?
come on RAYBROWN talk about your three rings! three different sports! Class of 1989! Loser. Find a girl and focus on her instead of high school athletes. Horrible embarrassing ignorant loser.
Ray im sorry that youre such a loser. honest i am. There is no program at Derby they should have been in the NVL all along were they could compete. And you don’t know a thing about those guys and their relation to Rich so shut the hell up you loser.
fp sam-there was a program at derby-until the real coaches retired—–the scc needs derby—-prep and ndwh have to beat somebody
yeah dave they also beat the new londons the stamford catholics when there were 4 playoff divisions and not the watered down system they have now-do your research——whole whats class of 89?three rings kid————maybe you should change your post to as…whole
I would just like to congratulate the Trumbull High football team for their decisive win over St Joe’s. Very few people picked them to win, but they played a great game. I saw a few of their games and this was their best. I believe they were an overlooked team this year. They lost by 3 points to one of the best teams in Massachusetts, and were inches away from possibly continuing a drive to beat Greenwich. Their 1 bad loss was opening game to New Canaan – they can’t make any excuses here as the game wasn’t close.
Ray the prep playdown games were hillhouse and law. Prep hasnt played Derby in over 4 years at least. The NVL could use another cupcake team, they should allow Derby in the league so Ansonia could have another team to beat up.
RAY IVE ASKED YOU THIS QUESTION NUMEROUS TIMES AND YOUVE NEVER ANSWEREED IT. WHAT IS YOUR ASSOCIATION TO ANSONIA FOOTBALL?????
GEE SAM AND SHEA I PICKED UP THE LOCAL PAPER AFTER READING YOUR BLOG AND GUESS WHAT I SAW —COACH FROM NDWH RESIGNS—SO TWO SCC PROGRAMS THAT IVE MALIGNED ALL YEAR BECAUSE THEY STINK,SUDDENLY BOTH THEIR HEAD COACHES RESIGN.KINDA OF HARD TO ARGUE A BLOGGER THAT HAS SOME FOOTBALL KNOWLEDGE ISNT IT?
