HS football: Ridgefield to play Wilbur Cross (with updates)

by:

And the high school football stove keeps burning.

The FCIAC, which was hoping to secure a two-year scheduling deal from outsiders, has apparently decided to acquiesce and start scheduling out-of-league games. Ridgefield has secured a date with Wilbur Cross of New Haven in Week 4.

Now that the seal is broken, here’s a look at how the FCIAC and SCC bye weeks line up and if a deal has been made. If a team is already spoken for, its opponent appears in parentheses.

Week………..FCIAC-SCC…………………………..Commit?
Week 1……..St. Joseph-Hillhouse…………………No. (Hillhouse is playing Ansonia)
Week 2……..Warde-Branford……………………….No.
Week 3……..Wilton-North Haven………………….Yes.
Week 4……..Ridgefield vs. Wilbur Cross………..Yes
Week 5……..New Canaan-Notre Dame-WH…….No.
Week 6……..Darien-Foran…………………………..No. (Foran is looking to play Enfield)
Week 7……..Trinity-East Haven……………………Yes. (schools are negotiating) The deal has been made.
Week 8……..Ludlowe-Sheehan…………………….No.
Week 9……..McMahon-Lyman Hall……………….No.

Lots of solid match-ups here. You can’t call any of them mismatches, either.

A Wilton-North Haven game is particularly intriguing. Foran-Darien would be interesting, but the word is Foran wants to broker a deal with Enfield.

Update, Friday: Wilton-North Haven is a go. McMahon, Ludlowe and Warde are looking elsewhere and might have found teams already.

The gem of the list, of course, is a potential game between Notre Dame-West Haven and New Canaan. This game, which would pit two of the state’s historically strong programs, looks like a no-brainer. But we’re hearing rumors that one of the sides is balking at the prospect. Stay tuned on that one.

Hillhouse’s deal with Ansonia leaves St. Joseph out in the cold. But we’re not so sure St. Joseph minds. The Cadets can pick up a game from the NVL, which is allowing its schools to schedule out-of-league games in Week 1.

i would love to see greenwich vs hand, that would be the ultimate showdown between the leagues.fciac has had the scc’s number in the playoffs the last few years but i think that dominance will come to an end

    Foran vs Darien???
    McMahon vs LHall??

Those 2 SCC teams are so bad…How can you call them anything but mis-matches?? If Hillhouse played SJ they would win by 3 scores easy….
SPB I know you are being proper and make everyone happy…But please….

st. joesph should play stratford high that would be great 1 watch out for the devils this year

  6. AnsoniaVinny says:

How about St Joes plays Holy Cross? And who really wants to see New Canaan play ND?

  7. roto says:

Let me guess which side is balking on the NC-NDWH matchup? When that school actually had a strong program (not just historically), they traveled all over the state and beyond to fill their schedule. Maybe it is time to return to that mentality.

  8. new cannan says:

can new canaan please play someone good for once!

  9. Mike Smith says:

I would be slightly shocked if NC turned this game down

Why not take a game that has zero effect on FCIAC standings…a competative game only makes a team tougher for the rest of its in conferene schedule

I think a New Canaan vs. Notre Dame would be a classic even if the two programs will take a step backword next year. These are two of the classiest programs in the state year in and year out.

  11. jeb says:

Notre Dame vs New Canaan is a terrific matchup of two of the most respected programs in CT. New Canaan will be a little down next year but in two years watch out. ND is always good even in a down year.
