Through rain, snow, sleet… (Tuesday recap, Wednesday hoop outlook)

OscarAssie.jpgLadies and Gentlemen!

Step right up!

See Greater Bridgeport’s first big game of the season: Central at St. Joseph

And through rain, snow, sleet or gloom of night, they will play tonight at 7.

Not so for many of the other games up New Haven way. The rain, snow and sleet — for certain — have again tampered with the broader regional schedule.

Here’s what’s on the docket for both boys and girls basketball games:

Central tops Wilbur Cross (and Tuesday games)

JeromeParkins.jpgCan’t say I saw this coming. Central hammered Wilbur Cross 82-63 Monday night in possibly one of the most complete performances I’ve seen Central play in my four-plus years at the Connecticut Post.

Five Central players scored in double figures, led by Jerome Parkins‘ 18. Central’s backcourt of Jerry Washington, Chris Colon, C.J. Harrison and Christon Gill harassed Wilbur Cross into turnovers by the dozen.

On second glance, the jury’s still out on just how impressive this 19-point victory is, really. Wilbur Cross, which is coming off an SCC championship and 1-loss season (that being to Lyman Hall in the quarterfinals of last year’s state tournament), brought back one senior, Kendall Williamson and started all underclassmen against Central (Williamson didn’t start for disciplinary reasons).

Central, which played in front of scouts from all across the FCIAC (especially from St. Joseph, it’s opponent Wednesday night), showed some flaws — particularly in the paint — which might be exploited by a better club.

We’ll see Wednesday night…

The latest poll is out but (ahem) there has apparently been some problems, so we are not going to give the published poll any validation here. Perhaps on another entry (evil laugh).

Here’s Tuesday’s docket:

Heating up in boys hoop

basketball.png KCUnderwood.jpg Saturday night produced an intriguing result from the SWC when Stratford buried Bunnell 69-43 on Bulldog Blvd. Bunnell coach Pat Yerina thought his team might struggle, going as far as saying his team wasn’t a league championship contender in the preseason.

While we’ll reserve judgment just yet, Stratford certainly did its part in proving Yerina right. Three Red Devils scored in double figures, led by guards Jason Charles had (17 points) and Russell Payton (15). Stratford led 36-19 at halftime and cruised to this non-league victory.
