Playoff Time: The FCIAC scenario

Here’s a look at the FCIAC playoff standings heading into tonight’s finale. Plenty can still happen with Bassick traveling to Stamford in a fight for its playoff life.

The Lions need to win to get in. But in the event of a loss, will be rooting hard for Harding, which can knock New Canaan out of the mix, and McMahon, which can knock Staples out. The Lions lost to both New Canaan and Staples during the regular season.

Here’s how it looks.

1. Trinity Catholic*………17-0 (vs. Central)
2. Central*…………………17-0 (at Trinity)
3. Stamford*………………15-2 (vs. Bassick)
4. Harding*………………..11-6 (vs. New Canaan)
5. St. Joseph*…………….11-6 (at Ridgefield)
6. Danbury*……………….11-6 (at Norwalk)
7. Greenwich*……………..10-7 (vs. Fairfield Warde)
8. Bassick………………..10-7 (at Stamford)
—-
9. New Canaan……………9-8
10. Staples………………….9-8
Tiebreaker: New Canaan best Staples

Here’s the quick breakdown:
The winner of Trinity-Central gets the top seed. Stamford has clinched the third seed. Harding with a win over New Canaan will clinch the No. 4 seed. A Harding loss and a Danbury win will bump the Hatters to 4 and Harding down to 5… that is, unless St. Joseph also wins.

The Cadets will clinch at least a 5 with a win. A loss, and the Cadets could fall as far as No. 8. They lost to Greenwich and Bassick in the regular season, but beat Danbury.

The Hatters are pretty much locked in at No. 6. They lost to St. Joseph, Harding and Greenwich, but holds tiebreakers over Bassick. Should the Lions get in, the Hatters will do no worse than No. 7 with a loss.

If Bassick loses and New Canaan or Staples wins, the Lions will be out of luck. New Canaan would also beat out Staples in a three-way tie between those schools. Staples needs to win and have Bassick and New Canaan lose.

Greenwich gets Fairfield Warde, a win and they’re in, most likely 7th. The Cards beat Danbury and would leap-frog a 11-7 Hatters (tha’s with a Norwalk loss) into at least 6th. With an unlikely loss Greenwich would need Bassick to lose. In that case, it would get in because it defeated Bassick, New Canaan and Staples in the regular season.
