COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Prep’s Garrett Brown named a Minnesota football captain

garrettbrown.JPGFairfield Prep graduate Garrett Brown has been named one of six captains for the Minnesota football team.

He was named captain along with senior WR Eric Decker and junior QB Adam Weber, senior LBs Lee Campbell and Simoni Lawrence and senior DT Eric Small. The captains were voted by the team.

“I could not be more pleased with the selections the team made with these six young men,” Minnesota coach Tim Brewster said. “These guys exemplify what it means to be a captain and have displayed true leadership with both their actions and their words.”

Brown, a senior defensive tackle, has started 19 games for the Gophers in his career, including 16 in a row heading into the 2009 season. He was ranked fourth on the team in tackles for losses last season with 7.0 and collected 34 total stops. He’s a two-time All-Big Ten Academic team member and led the conference in fumble recoveries.

“This is a great honor for him,” said former Fairfield Prep coach Rich Magdon, who spoke to Brown Thursday night.
