Staples QB Brandon Pacilio
Pacilio broke the ankle in the second quarter of Staples’ 40-0 victory over Harding at Hedges Stadium. Initially, Petroccio said there was an outside chance the injury wasn’t severe and the senior could return. But after being re-evaluated, it was decided to have the surgery. “It’s a shame,” Petroccio said. “Everybody’s pretty broken up about it.”
Pacilio had passed for 571 yards and 6 touchdowns and no interceptions this year. He’s also run for 218 yards and six touchdowns.
Nobody likes to see this happen. We all wish Pacilio well. But now the 6-0, third-ranked Wreckers are Keith Gelman‘s show to run. “He’s played a lot of varsity, but he’s never been the man,” Petroccio said. “I told him it’s easy to run the show when it’s 40-0. Now now you have to do it at 0-0. It’s a whole different ballgame.”
Staples plays Ludlowe on Friday night. We’ll have more later in the week.

This is opens the LL even more. I think their D will win some games by themselves allowing new the QB to get his feet wet. Greenwich could pick them off now not having to respect the option or the pass as much. we shall see
I like Staples to win at least three more games. That Trumbull game certainly got a lot more interesting. If they played now, they’re ‘dogs against Greenwich. But we have a lot to learn about “New” Staples before then.
Good point Coach P makes. He will have opportunities. The question is, will Gelman be able to execute under pressure? Ludlowe will provide a lot of that.
staples loses to ludlowe this week im calling it now
Staples v. NC – last 6
1997 Staples 27-NC 21
2003 Staples 38 NC 0
2005 Staples 28 NC 24
2006 NC 14 Staples 13 missed pat
2007 Staples 14 NC 7
2008 NC 21 Staples 20 missed pat
Staples has the BEST kicker in CT. in 2009!
Prophet, I am curious as to why you feel Ludlowe will defeat Staples. If you take a look at the two teams’ previous meetings, you would know that Staples won 21-0 in 2007 and 8-7 in 2008. I understand that the 2008 victory came in the last minutes of the game, but the 2008 Staples team was the worst the school has had in recent years; the 2009 crew has proven itself to be a much better unit. True, Staples will be missing Pacilio, but his loss doesn’t affect Staples’ defense or special teams, both of which have been stellar. Ludlowe always plays Staples tough, and I’m sure this game will be no different, but there is no reason the Wreckers can’t pull away with a victory on Friday night
I am sure that Staples will miss their starting QB, but to me they still look very tough.
Staples are always a bunch of well coached, smart, athletic, agressive bunch of hitters. While I am pretty sure no one took them lightly before, I hope that no one takes them lightly now.
Bulletin: Ludlowe will not beat Staples!!
Maybe I’m missing something but is Ludlowe suppose to be a good team this year. I know they have some players back from injury but playing and beating a good team like Staples seems a little out of the question.
Staples does not win with offense, they win with defense. Ive seen Staples play several times this year and they will not beat Glastonbury, Hamden, Cheshire or Xavier. The problem is that Staples should qualify for the states and I doubt if two of those schools will.
im not saying staples cant win the game, the problem is that pacillio is not only marce QB but he is also their best running back. the new starter is a senior that has never seen the field except for special teams. the option is one of the most difficult offenses to run, and if its not somethig you practice everyday you wont be any good at it. not to mention that the QB is the kog that makes the entire thing worse, i expect for the ball to be on the ground from him this week. Ludlowe is a good team that is getting better. that kid NAgy is the real deal. and if staples backup had been any type of athlete marce would have found somewhere on the field for him to play besides special teams. i didnt even know this kid was on the roster. hey i hope he comes in a does a great job, when NC plays Staples in the FCIAC i dont want marce to have any excuses.
Pacilio has been a workhorse for Staples. Let’s wish him a speedy recovery and a stellar college career. I’m sure we’ll be reading about his success on the gridiron next September at the college of his choice.
Some random thoughts:
The kicker from Staples is excellent. That will give them a huge edge over the other teams on their schedule
Pacilio was a gamer and will be hard to replace.
SPB. Could you mention to the CIAC to put the Class LL and The Class L at different times this year.
I doubt if any of the remaining unbeatens would like to play West Haven or Shelton.
When will Ridgefield High School ever win a big game?
Cromwell is not the same team they were last year but they can still win the SS if Prince Tech doesn’t keep them from qualifying.
The class MM only has two good teams. New Canaan and East Lyme
Is Holy Cross legit or is it the league in which they play in?
Nobody plays pass defense and that’s why a good passing team can beat a good running team any day of the week in high school.
New Britain High School has the best football band in the land.
Did Ansonia know that Hillhouse was going to be down this year?
Notre Dame of West Haven might be the states best team. A tremendous comeback by Xavier will haunt them.
If Stamford upsets Bridgeport Central all will be forgiven for the Black and Orange.
Glastonbury is a whole lot better than people think. The QB is a monster to bring down.
Wilbur Cross High School has the only concession stand that sells PIZZA FREAT or fried dough to all you non-Italians.
Where has the Hamden offense gone? Be careful Dragons or you will be sitting home in DEC.
Is it me or ever since the spread offense, no huddle offense has arrived there is more and more delay of game penalties. What gives?
Wasn’t the Staples QB a senior last year?
Dad, Pacilio was Staples QB last year as junior. You may be thinking about thinking prior year when QB was senior Mike Samela, now at Amherst College.
prophet i wish this was nfl or college so i culd bet u and take your money.Staples is not losing this week,it may be a 1 or 2 td difference, but i hope your so willing to talk after the loss like you are before it,smh.
does anyone elses entire football team have swine flu…i mean it seems like all my kids are getting sick
Prophet, special teams is not a dumping ground for unathletic kids. It is a critical facet of the game that requires some of the best players on the field. Gelman has had an exceptional special teams campaign this season that includes a key blocked punt in the Staples-Ridgefield game and several great blocks that led to long punt returns (not to mention his impeccable holding on PAT’s). He is a good athlete who happened to be playing the same position as a very gifted player, and there is no reason he shouldn’t have a solid campaign as Staples’ starting QB.
listens its possible i could wrong…ive been wrong once or twice in my life, but i feel it makes for fun conversation but getting you kids all worked up. i still think ludlowe wins. and like i said before if we are gambling i want odds on my money. ill take the spread plus the over/under. how many points are you giving me?
Just recently looking back on all the state championships the Fciac has produced over the years since 1976;
Oddly enough Danbury, with a huge enrollment has never won a state tittle.
Here is how the teams have fared in the finals:
St. Josephs 8-2
New Canaan 7-2
Greenwich 7-7
Darien 4-6 Warde,Ludlowe,Central,Harding,
Trumbull 3-4 Stamford, Westhill, Bassick and Norwalk
Trinity 2-2 have never played in the finals.
Wilton 2-2
Staples 3-3
Rippowam 1-0
Ridgefield 1-0
Danbury 0-1
Brien McMahon 1-1
if hillhouse was down how are they winning in the scc?
your team mite claim it has swine flu—-speacially if its losing
Ray,
Then Ansonia must have the swine…Hillhouse stinks…they have beaten a few D2 SCC teams
Prophet –
Shhhhh……..
i got news for you guy-the whole scc d-2 stinks—–how was derby winning games in the scc? i dont think theyll reach that 5 win guarantee in the n.v.l. this year
Ray Brown
Face reality SCC D2 is still better then the NVL. Derby has 3 wins with a 1 point loss to St Paul and a one score loss to Wolcott. They have a good shot at beating both Wilby and Crosby for 5 wins something that was not possible for Derby in the SCC.
I have seen plenty of NVL football this year and in years past…it is a very average league that would get trounced if they stepped out on a consistent basis. Ray Brown lives in la la land…Some of the stuff you say is hilarious…People on here think you have problems
davek-they beat seymour, sacred heart and naugy-total—4 wins between them——derbys next win will be against the gutless gaels
Dave K,
Derby finished 5-5 in the SCC as recently as 2005. So it was certainly possible.
You also say “They have a good shot at beating both Wilby and Crosby for 5 wins.”
Agreed they have a shot, but they could just as easily lose those games and finish 3-7.
The over and under on Derby is 4and a half wins. I’ll take the over.
Ray-lets just call it as it is-the NVL is down. Next year they might rebound and then we all will be singing Ansonias praises.
