Pomperaug and Masuk have both qualified for the SWC Football Championship.
(That was easy.)
Nov. 19 at Arum Field in Southbury, 7 p.m.
I was a tad perplexed by the venue change to Pomperaug. More on that in a bit.
Meanwhile, Let the hype begin.
Update: From Dave Johnson, the Bunnell Athletic Director and one of the SWC’s chairmen:
He says the SWC has three championship sites it likes to rotate between (to keep the title game in-house and not at a foreign school): Bunnell, Brookfield, Pomperaug.
When the Brookfield field issue from last year was corrected, the SWC ADs scheduled the game for Brookfield. However, the Brookfield board of education had booked parent-teacher conferences on the same night as the SWC title game a long time ago. It wasn’t noticed until recently. If anybody knows, cars representing every child will be at those two schools on that night. Not ideal by any stretch, especially at Brookfield, where cars cram along the narrow road for a big game.
They would have gone to Bunnell, but it also has parent-teacher conferences that night, so that plan was nixed.
Pomperaug was available. They put it back at Pomperaug. Johnson said he has heard no complaints, especially from Masuk. “None at all,” he said.

Brookfield just does not like Masuk. They bagged them. The game should be played at Bunnell.

What a timely decision to move the game to Pompy. Hey SPB who makes the decision to move the game and where it will be played. The league now has almost two weeks to pick a neutral site. Notice the FCIAC didn’t pick New Canaan, Staples, Central they picked Wilton.
Comment by hsff fan — November 9th, 2009 @ 6:23 pm
Masuk has a lot of pull in that league and I guarantee that game is not played on Arum FIeld (Pompy) it will be played at Bunnell.
Comment by Brian — November 9th, 2009 @ 6:27 pm
It wasn’t noticed until recently ????? If Brookfield was playing would the game be moved ??? Or if Bunnell was playing and they had the opportunity to host would they say no. I don’t think so.
Comment by big guy — November 9th, 2009 @ 7:03 pm
Yes. They would.
Comment by Sean Patrick Bowley — November 9th, 2009 @ 7:05 pm
No. They wouldn’t-not in a 100 year’s. But hey, we’ll never no.
Comment by big guy — November 9th, 2009 @ 7:14 pm
WHO CARES It will make it that much sweeter when we knock them off on their home field. CC will pick them apart,if the QB from New Milford torched them wait till they get a load of the best QB in the state!!
I said it before and I’ll say it again Pomperaug=over-rated
Comment by TherealMasukrules — November 9th, 2009 @ 7:21 pm
I asked a question, got a legitimate answer. I believe Dave Johnson, who’s been a respected AD in this state for years.
What else do you want? An investigation? Brookfield and Bunnell are conspiring to screw Masuk by scheduling parent-teacher conferences jointly?
Look, had this been last year, they would have played at Bunnell. The year before, they would have played at Pomperaug, no matter who was in the game. League has agreed to rotate the sites — three of the league’s best.
Comment by Sean Patrick Bowley — November 9th, 2009 @ 7:23 pm
Why can’t the game be moved to Friday at either Brookfield or Bunnell?
Comment by Mike — November 9th, 2009 @ 7:26 pm
Relax SPB – You were the one who was perplexed remember. That is what got me started.
Maybe next year the host team should just check the calender first.
Comment by big guy — November 9th, 2009 @ 7:30 pm
The league always plays its championship game on Thursday night to account for Thanksgiving and the possibility of a weather delay.
This really isn’t a big deal.
Comment by Sean Patrick Bowley — November 9th, 2009 @ 7:33 pm
SWC Championship Games have previously been played on the home field of one of the contenders.
Whats the Big Deal?
I’ve seen The SWC Host(home) team even play on the visitor side years back.
Comment by Who Cares — November 9th, 2009 @ 7:43 pm
I was perplexed until someone unperplexed me.
No, somebody above suggested Brookfield was trying to screw Masuk. Sorry. I’m a little punchy what with all the conspiracy theories (published and unpublished) on the Greenwich-New Canaan post.
I’m going to stop responding.
Comment by Sean Patrick Bowley — November 9th, 2009 @ 7:51 pm
Who cares where the game is going to be played. I don’t think there is a home field advantage in football unless the playing surface is different.
Comment by Firestorm — November 9th, 2009 @ 9:12 pm
just play ball please, enough drama already about where to play the damn game!!!
Comment by R-MAC — November 9th, 2009 @ 9:48 pm
Who cares Pomperaug will crush Masuk on any field this year!
Comment by PBL — November 9th, 2009 @ 10:19 pm
haha, masuk will take them apart anywhere…there is nothing Murphy likes more for motivation than a little controversy and challenge.
Comment by StupidNighthawks — November 10th, 2009 @ 2:43 am
pomperaug–OVERRATED
They cant pass the ball at all,Murph will load the box and stop them cold.Cochrane will carve them up like a Thanksgiving turkey it will be just like the Bethel defense.Pomp got no pressure on the kid from New Milford and our OL is way better. No pressure on the QB=huge day for CC
48-14 Masuk over pompy
Comment by TherealMasukrules — November 10th, 2009 @ 7:44 am
SPB,
Masuk has more playoff points than Pomperaug so will they be on the home side of Arum field? Also if you had to put a spread on this game what do you think? I think Pomp is favored by 8 points.
Comment by bellvue — November 10th, 2009 @ 8:17 am
All the Bunnell fans are hating on Masuk. Is it the Panthers fault that The Mad Scientist’s team lost to Newtown for the first time all decade? Or that they were beat by Oxford, New Fairfield, and Notre Dame-Fairfield? Are some people a little jealous that their team isn’t 8-0?
Comment by MasukRules — November 10th, 2009 @ 12:12 pm
TherealMasukrules is a fraud. However, imitation is the highest form of flattery. All the people who put rule or rules in their name make me proud of all my work.
Comment by MasukRules — November 10th, 2009 @ 12:14 pm
I favor Masuk by 3 points. Until proven otherwise they are the defending league champs and undefeated still. They always have a puncher’s chance becuase they can score at any time. I still think this game gets moved again before next week. I think Pomp’s ground game will keep Masuk off the field and playing at home I think Pomp wins the game but closer than people think. Much closer.
Comment by Brian — November 10th, 2009 @ 12:30 pm
Are the Pomperaug kids making this stuff up? Perhaps something to hang in the locker room? …[comment truncated]… This will be a great battle but I am pretty sure Pomperaug comes away with the win on its home turf. 35-21.
Comment by hullabaloo — November 10th, 2009 @ 1:11 pm
This game is not a good match-up for Masuk. Pomp puts their best atheltes in the secondary (their QB & HB) daring you to throw deep. Mausk will and Pomp will make the big defensive plays.
Offesnsively Pomp can run well with either HB or bruisng FB. They have a good wide out that their tall strong QB finds for long gains.
Pomp is the best team in the state. Let’s get real, NC wasn’t the best team last year and they aren’t the best team this year.
Comment by tj — November 10th, 2009 @ 1:47 pm
TJ,
I might agree with u about this year but who was better than them last year? I’m sure u will glastonbury as taht is the only answer that might make sense to me.
Comment by Brian — November 10th, 2009 @ 1:51 pm
Did Masuk use their JV Defense against Bethel?????
They gave up 500 yards of offense against them. Pomperaug shut Bethel out for 3 Qtr’s (only 150 yards of offense) before they subbed out the entire Defense. The score was 42-0 at that time.
Pomperaug can throw they just don’t need to most of the time. They have this kid named Ben Crick (ever heard of him) and a very good O-Line. If Bethel can carve up Masuk’s D, what do you think Pomperaug will do?
It will be a great game.

I agree with TJ, Pomperaug is the best team in this state.
Pomeraug with win the SWC title game & than de-throne Masuk in the Class L finals to win state.
To bad Pompy did not play Masuk during the regular season they could of pulled off a Bunnell hat trick on Masuk….Doh……….
Comment by PBL — November 10th, 2009 @ 8:05 pm
masuk has pomperaugs number for a few years now, last loss was when this kid named kielt went there besides then its been all masuks way. Always a great rivalry though, back in 07 was a great game final being 25-21 Masuk. Location wont matter in this game masuk has played just as many big games in southbury its there second home.
Comment by andy — November 10th, 2009 @ 8:17 pm
Pompy and masuk will not rematch in the L finals if NDWH makes the field. They would beat both Pompy and Masuk. Conard not that good and simsbury should lose to Gbury and not make the field.
Comment by Brian — November 10th, 2009 @ 9:19 pm
pomp by a touchdown or less-then they meet again in the states, and win by a touchdown or less.
Comment by theruler — November 11th, 2009 @ 1:37 am
Masuk isn’t given credit where credit is due. Their offense is unstoppable. Casey Cochran is a beast, and Alex Trump is the counterpart of Ben Crick. Both offenses have great wide receivers, and a mix between pass and run that keeps teams on their heels. I see this game being a shootout because there’s no way Masuk’s defense is stopping Pomp’s offense, and Pomp will not be able to stop Masuk’s offense. They are very similar.. Who will score more?
Comment by swcfan — November 11th, 2009 @ 8:28 am
Ray Ray Brown, You crack me up!!! TJ–maybe New Canaan isn’t the best team this year but it’s hard to argue with last years team because of the schedule they played and the MM tourney was the hardest to win last year. This year NC schedule was weak but they still had to beat a good St. Joes, Greenwich, and down the raod Central, Staples and Darien. Pompy does not play that kind of schedule-that doesn’t mean that they are not a better team but if you were a voter you would have to put NC ahead of Pompy whether you like it or not.
Comment by jjs — November 11th, 2009 @ 9:57 am
jjs-
I thought that Masuk was the best team by the end of last year, Bunnell the year before and Pomp this year. All three had/have explosive offenses with mutlitple weapons and agressive, fast, hard hitting defenses.
The one thing that is still open for me on Pomp this year is that their front seven may not be exceptionaly qucik sideline to sideine. Last week, JB’s pitch on the option was eating them up.
Masuk will be a very good test for Pomp, though I see Pomp winning by two or three touchdowns.
Comment by tj — November 11th, 2009 @ 2:49 pm
TJ-
You sound like an SWC fan who does no like FCIAC football.
Masuk lost last year.
New Canaan was unbeaten last year and played everybody. Class MM was loaded. Get over it.
This year could be a different story, however.
