Gnaw-gnaw-gnaw-gnaw-gnaw…
Halfway through and His Madness’ head is starting to hurt.
Thankfully, the other playoff races are easier to compute since they feature teams that have already (unofficially) clinched playoff spots.
Here’s a little diddy for all you Bethel fans out there.
THE CLASS M SCENARIO
NEW LONDON (9-0) 1370
(UNOFFICIALLY CLINCHED)
Remaining: NFA (130 + 10)
Guaranteed 10: Fitch/Ledyard
Bonus 50: Bacon Academy (RHAM); Woodstock (Tourtellotte); East Lyme (Waterford); Montville (St. Bernard); Plainfield (Griswold).
Min: 1380-1430
Max: 1520-1570
The Mad Scientist SEZ: A win over NFA gives New London the top seed, a loss and they’re the No. 2. They shouldn’t lose.
AVON (10-0) 1400
(UNOFFICIALLY CLINCHED)
Guaranteed 30: Windsor Locks/Stafford; Gilbert/Housatonic, Coventry/Ellington
Bonus 30: Cromwell (Vinal); Gilbert (Morgan); Enfield (Fermi)
Max: 1430-1460
The Mad Scientist SEZ: Done with the regular season. At worst, it’s the No. 2 seed. It can earn the No. 1 if New London loses.
BERLIN (9-0) 1130
(UNOFFICIALLY CLINCHED, NO. 3)
Remaining: New Britain (140 +10)
Guaranteed: 0
Bonus (60): Wethersfield (Newington); NWCatholic (Plainville); Weaver (Hartford Public); Tolland (EOSmith); Rocky Hill (St. Paul); Bristol Eastern (Bristol Central); Platt (Maloney); Fermi (Enfield)
Min: 1130-1190
Max: 1280-1340
The Mad Scientist SEZ: It’s the No. 3 seed regardless of what happens.
Here’s where it gets mildly interesting…
BETHEL (7-2) 930
Remaining: Brookfield (120)
Guaranteed 20: Immaculate/ND; New Milford/New Fairfield
Bonus 30: Oxford (Pomperaug); Stratford (Bunnell); Weston (Barlow)
Min: 950 – 980
Max: 1070 – 1100
The Mad Scientist SEZ: Beat Brookfield, and the Wildcats are in as the No. 4 and go to either New London or Avon. Loss, and they’re going to be in trouble…
***
COVENTRY/WINDHAM TECH (7-2) 870
Remaining: Ellington (150)
Guaranteed 10: Windsor Locks/Stafford
Bonus 30: Enfield (Fermi); Housatonic (Gilbert); Old Saybrook (Morgan)
Max: 1030-1060
The Mad Scientist SEZ: Needs to beat Ellington and have Bethel lose to clinch. A loss, and they’re out.
BRANFORD (6-3) 850
Remaining: East Haven (100)
Guaranteed (10): Law/Foran
Bonus (30): North Haven (Amity); Hillhouse (Wilbur Cross); Guilford (Hand)
Max: 960 – 990
The Mad Scientist SEZ: Needs to beat East Haven (0-9) and have Coventry/Windham Tech and Bethel to both lose. Then it would be in a race with Bethel (and maybe even Watertown) for bonus points. If Branford gets two bonuses, it would beat Bethel. If it gets all three bonuses, it would beat Watertown.
…But if Watertown also wins and gets both of its bonuses, it can tie Branford and push this one to tiebreaker points.
That’s ALSO tied at 88.
In that case, it’s a coin-flip, folks.
Fortunately, we have a coin right here.
The coin is in the air…. and Watertown wins! (410579-51377, according to the CIAC’s predetermined by-lot tiebreaker).
It won’t come to this.
WATERTOWN (6-3) 800
Remaining: Torrington (140)
Guaranteed 20: Kennedy/Crosby; Seymour/Ansonia
Bonus 20: Derby (Shelton); Wilby (Sacred Heart)
Max: 960-980
The Mad Scientist Sez: Needs at least Bethel and Coventry to lose then hope to pass Branford and Bethel by getting all of its bonuses, and having those schools lose almost all their bonuses.
As described above, if by some miracle they tie Branford at 980 then all the tiebreakers go to Watertown.
But for that to happen, Bethel must lose and denied bonus points; Coventry must lose; then Wilby needs to beat Sacred Heart and Derby needs to beat Shelton.
Oh, it would also help if Branford, Bethel and Coventry all lost.
GILBERT/NORTHWESTERN (6-3) 810
Remaining: Housatonic (110)
Guaranteed 20: Stafford/Windsor Locks
Bonus 20: Old Saybrook (Morgan); Coventry (Ellington)
Max: 940– 960
The Mad Scientist SEZ: Needs Bethel, Branford and Coventry to all lose and then find a way to outpoint both Bethel and 7-3 Watertown on bonuses. Since it only has 20 bonuses, it’s out if Watertown wins. Watertown would win a tiebreaker with its minimum of 960. If Bethel loses, but gets enough bonuses it will beat them both.

Thank god they changed the format. very lame teams

I agree the New London – Bethel game should be interesting especially if New Londons q.b. does not play as expected. The New London defense will need to step up as it has all season.

NL didn’t look too impressive Friday against Sheehan. Maybe because NL & Sheehan both played without their starting QB’s. NL was not the same team that beat Montville & East Lyme. There game plan was nothing like they have used in previous games, having seen them against Montville & Fitch. It was a different team. NL’s QB could have hit #18 all night but didn’t throw to him. They used a basic running game. Maybe because Berlin was scouting and didn’t want to give up anything. NL scored 40 points and the defense didn’t give up a point, and they still didn’t look sharp. the states should be interesting.
