Masuk quarterback Casey Cochran throws a pass in an SWC regular season game vs. Bunnell. Masuk must win to secure a spot in the playoffs when they take on Thanksgiving Rival Newtown tonight at 7 p.m.
Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the greatest day of the Connecticut sports calendar.
Tomorrow, thousands of Nutmeg state residents will get up, rub the sleep out of their eyes, grab a cup of coffee or some breakfast and head over to their favorite Thanksgiving Day rivalry game.
It is a day where records are thrown out. Where everybody is undefeated. And a day where memories that will live eternity are created.
It is a day where advanced algebra becomes a pastime as everybody tries to figure out who is in, and who is out of the state playoffs.
But first, we start with the Wednesday night appetizers and, though there aren’t so many this year as in seasons past, there are certainly enough to whet your Thanksgiving Day appetite.
Here’s the regional schedule for Wednesday night:
Woodland at Seymour, 6; Newtown at Masuk, 7; Immaculate at Notre Dame-Fairfield (at Sacred Heart); Oxford at Pomperaug, 7; Bullard Havens Tech at Bassick, 5 p.m.
There are also a few other big games out there, for our newfound Coginchaug fans, Vinal Tech/Coginchaug plays at Cromwell; Hyde is at North Branford.
And, of course, there are two HUGE games for the Notre Dame-WH/Conard/Simsbury Class L race: Berlin at New Britain (you’re rooting for New Britain, Green Knights); Windsor at Bloomfield (you’re rooting for Bloomfield Windsor).
Here’s the full CIAC schedule for Thanksgiving.
To follow along on all the action, click the window below. You can also listen to “The Coach” George DeMaio on WAVZ 1300-AM, ESPNRadio 1300 tonight at 7 p.m. He’ll be in the studio getting Wednesday night updates from his cadre of correspondents all across the area.

Our HUGE Thanksgiving Day live blog will begin tomorrow at 7 a.m. Thanks and enjoy the games!

SPB – I know your head must be spinning, great work on the playoff scenarios, but I think ND wants Bloomfield to down Windsor! A Windsor W would give Simsbury 10 points.
Yes, that’s right. Thanks. It’s fixed.
masuk rules is heard chanting after game———–were no.3,were no.
3 ,were no.3 in the swc—————-what is masuk doing in top 10?
bulletin—————-jack cochrane cancels house closing in new caanan and buys condo in newtown—————coach-new london in m
i would just like to say i am thankful for masuk losing.HAHAHAHAHA i wish i could have seen the look on murphy’s face.
Did I hear right that Murphy was complaining that his field was a mess. Talk about crying wolf. The field was in great shape.
Masuk had no answer for Newtown. They could not match their intensity. Newtown was much tougher physically it showed on every play.
The SWC is so soft. You will all see soon enough.
With the Masuk loss the two CCC teams, Simsbury and Conard can breath a sigh of relief. I’m not sure about ND today but if they win then Masuk end their season with a two game losing streak. Neither Conard or Simsbury have lights, going to have to make a budgetary concession.
The Bullard Havens situation is really frustrating. They barely beat Bassick? St Joe’s gets screwed because they play legitimate schools. I wish their was a way to make league champs be legitimized. The Tech league is not good and their out of conference games are poor also. Farmington whooped one of their teams and Farmington is a struggling team.
MASUK so overated all year, look at the schedule. Would easily have 4, or 5, losses in SCC or FCIAC. Were exposed as weak early, in scrimmages, then waltz through a weak SWC, get ranked. Played 2 good teams, and lost both. At least next year true state champs will be crowned, with new playoff system. Teams with good records in weak leagues will be exposed against good teams at playoff time.
Masuk will get in the playoffs!
Great game by two very good teams. Newtown is a lot better than people think. Don’t count out Masuk yet. They need Hamden to beat NOtre Dame and they are back in the states.
Is it me or is the announcer at the Masuk game trying to coach Masuks team during the game.
I’ve seen Newtown twice this year, no surprise about their defense playing hard. Not a huge upset. Their offense moved the ball well and mixed it up. Masuk never adjusted their defense to the situations. Huge game by Deaken on both sides. Have to take advantage when you have home field.
Frankiefiveangels, No, coach cocheran is coaching masuk from off field, not the announcer.
Did Masuk win last night? Bunnell won today. Will Masuk make the play-offs? Will a special someone be choking down his turkey today? I won’t, this is turning out to be a great Thanksgiving.
I said it early prior to Masuk’s first game, they would score a lot of points and give up a lot of points….Good season however.
masuk was a year long fraud
My prediction was wrong. Hamden let me down.
For the record: shelton fan brought up scrimmages on Thanksgiving. That has to be a record.
For the record – What about your Stratford will beat Bunnell prediction? Your Masuk should be higher statements? Your best QB in the state statement? I’d say you are wrong on a whole lotta counts. Now, we should band together and support our two SWC teams that made the play-offs – Pomperaug and Bethel. Tell you what, you bring the “Panthers are #1″ sign (and please make sure, Pomperaug is on it somewhere) and I’ll buy the hot chocolate. SWC buddies 4ever!
Bunnell Booster who is that freshman QB that Bruno has been hidding all season long?????
wow, must be!
I never said that Masuk had the best qb in the state. That will be next year. What was Bunnell’s record this year? Did Masuk beat Bunnell 49-6? I made my prediction about Stratford beating Bunnell when Jeff Miller was healthy. I think he would have made a difference.
Brian Castelot. Hasn’t been hidden, he’s played a good bit. You’ll probably be hearing his name on the baseball field in the spring.
hey masuk rules, the scrimmage was brought up only to say that masuk was weak at scrimmages against good teams, weak at end of year against good teams. you want to say all season “masuk should be higher ‘ when they beat small swc schools with losing records. the truth is they were not that good this year.
masuk—- Did you see me at the game where Newtown knocked Masuk out of the play-offs? I was waving to you from the Newtown side. I hope you were able to enjoy dinner yesterday. I sure did.
shelton lost 3 games in scc this year but they beat masuk by 5 or 6 tds in scrimmage. And dont say it was only scrimmage because the level of the teams wasnt even close.Masuk is way overated. The 2 teams they played in LL and L beat them. What if they played schools their size weekly? In stronger leagues they would be about 6-4 or 5-5 every year.
shelton fan you are absolutely right masuk played no one they never do. You will also see Pomperaug lose to. Actually now with the new playoff format Masuck is going to have a hard time winning the states in the coming years. you will now see some SCC teams and New Cannan competing.
Willie and mon33, I can’t wait until New Canaan is lumped with Masuk, Pomperaug and Bunnell in the new play-off format. It’ll no longer the the New Canaan invitational. They will have their hands full year in and year out. New Canaan is the big loser with the new format. I’ll agree that Masuk wasn’t a powerhouse this year – very young and lacked size, but you are making a big mistake by dismissing them. This year Shelton may have handled them in a scrimmage (I’m taking your word for it), but don’t project from one event, in one year. I know for fact that Masuk played very well against Shelton and Greenwich (in scrimmages and I was there), the prior two years. Masuk is a strong program and will be for some time. Shelton will have more of a chance to handle their own business going forward and we’ll see if they can back up the tough talk, when it matters.
New Canaan beats big schools like Trumbull, Staples, Ridgefield, and Greenwich every year.
I forgot ND-West Haven and Conard above. They’ll also make the new “L” division much more competitive. No more walks in the park. It’s gonna be fun to watch. No disrespect to New Canaan – they are a great program, but the “L” division will be extremely competitive – every year.
