Welcome back to the live high school football scoring blog. Can’t make it to one of the games, look nowhere else but here where the Hearst Connecticut Newspapers’ cadre of staff and correspondents will be providing live scoring updates from all of the games on tap tonight.
Below is the schedule for all of the games tonight. We’ll be covering eight of them, but we expect to see updates from all 12 of the games. While you’re watching, you can also listen to one of the few broadcasts of the games.
For a preview of the state semifinal games, be sure to check out Friday Night Football “FNF Overtime” with John Holt and Joe Zone here. We’ve also added their class-by-class video breakdown with Ned “Bright Lights Big City” Griffen from The Day of New London, who’s one of the few guys who sees more teams than anyone else (with former Register editor Bob Barton being at the top of the list).

St. JOE’S FINAL?
Comment by Jack m. — December 1st, 2009 @ 9:07 pm
The NVL flexed their muscle tonight. How impressive! St. Joseph’s j.v. must be dead tired.
Comment by MasukRules — December 1st, 2009 @ 9:23 pm
i’m listening to espn radio…they got an official sounding guy on trying to figure out the times & sites…too bad uconn’s home, that would be a great site for someone, or a couple of games…i don’t have yale’s schedule at hand, but that would be a cool venue…
Comment by ghsgrandpa — December 1st, 2009 @ 9:26 pm
Where’s Ray Brown and Remmy to spin about the NVL?
Comment by MasukRules — December 1st, 2009 @ 9:27 pm
Congrats to the 2 SWC teams in the state finals. SWC gets a bad rap about being a weak conference. Well I think it has been proven tonight that the SWC is a very good conference. Good job Bethel…no one thought you could go into New London and win and you dominated. Pompy keeps rolling. Great Job.
Comment by swc fan — December 1st, 2009 @ 9:27 pm
Well I am leaving for Vegas in the AM after picking 11 out of 12 including BETHEL !!. Great night for the FCIAC and a disaster for the NVL. All of the finals should be great games but I really hope the LL and L are seperate times. Good luck to all the teams still alive for a state title.
Comment by Brian — December 1st, 2009 @ 9:42 pm
NDWH is back baby. Bout to get that state title. Go knights go SCC
Comment by Fp Sam — December 1st, 2009 @ 9:53 pm
congratulations to Bethel. of all the matchups, who would have predicted that bethel would travel the farthest across the state to play New London and absolutely skunk them 34-12.
and who would have guessed that Ansonia would be shut out?
have seen both pomperaug and notre dame this year. both have strong offenses; edge on defense to ND, edge on kicking game to pomperaug. should be a great final. let’s hope the game is in the afternoon so it doesn’t conflict with the 8pm uconn vs. south florida game.

If Holy Cross is the best of the NVL, go figure. Your best team is down by 50 points at half to the 6th best FCIAC team. Staples, Central, Greenwich, New Canaan, Ridgefield are all better than SJ. SJ will smash Montville who lost to New London. It was nice to see SJ play defense for a change. But I think it was more of a lack of offense from Holy Cross. I think Holy Cross set a record for fumbled snaps. Holy Cross played scared.
Comment by Tiger Woods Wannabe — December 1st, 2009 @ 11:09 pm
for second year in row ansonia was outplayred and more disturbingly outscouted and outcoached—another complete breakdown —no line play the defense never showed up and their passing game finally caught up with them——i did warn the blog of st.pauls-by the way did anybody get a masuk score?
Comment by ray brown — December 1st, 2009 @ 11:15 pm
quick recap on the hyde bloomfield game-it was a tale of 2 halfs, with hyde jumping out to a 26-o halftime lead.Bloomfield couldnt stop the run(i dont think hyde attempted a pass in 1st half)at all,and their offense did nothing. They come out and score to start 2nd half, try a onside kick,it works, they score again, try another one, hyde recovers scores but bloomfield got it to within 32-26,then hyde forced a fumble scored, and thts all she wrote.#40 for hyde is abttering ram of a rb,hes listed at 5″8 297,he was unstopable.their hb #5 was real good too.The kid jones from bloomfield is very good, his passes had alot of zip,and he was able to move around in the pocket.i was entertained.

Nobody should bash the SWC. Second-worst? They’ve won multiple state titles three years running. Great job by Bethel.
Comment by Sean Patrick Bowley — December 1st, 2009 @ 11:46 pm
Spit about the NVL? Calm down, MasukRules.
I am a realist and have always been one, so don’t ever put me into the “homer” category.
Ansonia’s offensive line got straight-up dominated by NWC’s d-line. Ansonia never recovered after that opening kickoff return for a TD by NWC.
Comment by Remmy — December 2nd, 2009 @ 12:20 am
Tiger Woods….I will give you all of the above on who is better than SJ in FCIAC, but not Ridgefield…They were way too way dimensional…you can’t beat a real team by completing 1 pass a game…SJ would beat them by 2 TDs…Also don’t know if I think New canaan is playing better than SJ right now
Comment by The_One — December 2nd, 2009 @ 12:22 am
Ive followed SJ all year and they are peaking right now.
Comment by Ole#65 — December 2nd, 2009 @ 1:18 am
I meant way too one dimensional
Comment by The_One — December 2nd, 2009 @ 1:22 am
I have to agree with you, The One, ever since I saw them in person at GHS, and came close to beating them…I was very impressed with St.Joe’s that night, and especially Matakevich…He kind of reminds me of a real tough running back for the Oakland Raiders, Pete Banasak, pretty far back in the day…I know nothing about Montville, but any team in the state would have their hands full with this kid…And ever since that Greenwich game, St.Joe’s has been crushing everyone…
Comment by ghsgrandpa — December 2nd, 2009 @ 1:26 am
2 best teams in the state going at it on saturday Pomperaug vs Ndame.
Comment by HSFOOT — December 2nd, 2009 @ 1:40 am
Holy Cross was not really the best team in the NVL this year. I mean, they sort of were, they started off the year strong, and they did win the league….
On second thought, it doesn’t even matter. This would be a waste of time. You would have needed to follow the league the entire year to understand the whole situation and it doesn’t matter anyways.
They got beat 56-7 and that is an awful performance.
There is a reason nobody took them seriously as #1 seed.
Comment by Rob — December 2nd, 2009 @ 2:41 am
Ray,
Ansonia was outscouted and outcoached?
So the opening kick return for the TD, the wide open drop in the end zone on Ansonia’s first drive, the missed chip shot field goal, and all the turnovers….
those were all due to bad coaching?
Comment by Rob — December 2nd, 2009 @ 2:44 am
The NVL had a worse night than I did… though I absolutely LOVE how St. Paul showed up tonight. Great job, Jude.
Comment by Sean Patrick Bowley — December 2nd, 2009 @ 3:05 am
So who was the best team in the NVL?
Comment by swc fan — December 2nd, 2009 @ 8:05 am
Staples will play arguably the biggest game in the history of their program on Saturday against Cheshire. With a win the Wreckers secure the #1 spot in the entire state. The team and its coaches are invited to black tie affairs at Yale and NYC. The whole community will join together to give this great team their due. New CAnaan was in the same situation last year and capped off a perfect season with a state championship over Darien. I think the wreckers have it in them to give the FCIAC back to back NUMBER ONE teams .
Comment by jjs — December 2nd, 2009 @ 8:06 am
Congrats to ST. Paul. They outplayed the Rams and if they didn’t fumble twice inside the ram five yard line they would have pulled off the upset.
How did New Canaan ever beat Greenwich and ST. Joes? The team has not played a good game since they beat a good Greenwich team. The offense can’t move the ball and that is their strength.
Many on this blog thought NC would walk over the MM field but right now East Lyme will be a two touchdown favorite to beat the RAMS.
Comment by frankiefiveangels — December 2nd, 2009 @ 8:10 am
Two touchdown favorite, New Canaan is due, they will break out of their slump!
Comment by John D — December 2nd, 2009 @ 9:18 am
could not agree more on NC
their bread and better is not even at the table
historically, that offense has been able to dip and dunk – short passing turns into big gains
Baty’s arm changed the equation this year – their winning was directly proportional to how deep they’d throw it – they have not been throwing deep since greenwich – would love to say that D’s have figured them out, but to me it seems more like play calling
It always seems that NC peaks at this time of year
East Lyme has to be favored
Somebody said St Joes is playing better than NC right now – that is spot on – if they play each other today, St Joe’s wins by at least two td’s
Comment by fan — December 2nd, 2009 @ 9:30 am
frankie-
I agree with you–
We are in serious trouble against East Lyme. The team is not that good. can’t believe we beat both Greenwich and St. Joe’s.
If NC wins the state title with THIS team, I think LOU MARINELLI should get some coach of the year consideration. He already is the coach of the decade…but this year might be his finest coaching performance.
Hope I’m wrong, but I think East Lyme wins….21-13…..denying NCHS a 4th staright state title.
Too many starters lost from last year for New Canaan!
Comment by NCFan — December 2nd, 2009 @ 9:34 am
Pomperaug vs. ND will be one for the ages. If Staples loses and Pomperaug loses we will have a #1 team in the state with one loss. Crazy that some team can’t run the table in this state. I still feel like one of the best teams (Bridgeport Central) is home watching. I’m not sure if the best team won when they lost to Staples.
Comment by Tiger Woods Wannabe — December 2nd, 2009 @ 10:00 am
Holy Cross was the NVL Champion! They were the best team in the conference this year.
Comment by MasukRules — December 2nd, 2009 @ 10:26 am
I was at the Bethel – New London game last night. Bethel showed up to play and New London was just on the field!!!!! I just wonder if NL felt Bethel was an easy push over? All the media hype about New London in all. And By the way WFSB can you say BETHEL now.
Comment by Big Dad — December 2nd, 2009 @ 10:26 am
I wrote spin and not spit. There is a difference.
Comment by MasukRules — December 2nd, 2009 @ 10:30 am
I think New Canaan has a confidence issue right now. They need to get there Swagger back and they should be fine. That’s a good team over there with a good coach. NC 35-21
Comment by Ole#65 — December 2nd, 2009 @ 12:18 pm
Oh and I figured out who Ray Brown is and going by what the NVL did last night I realy can’t take him seriously. And to THSfan, that All Catholic Confrence St. joes used to play in featured teams like Prep(when they were good) NDWH, Xavier and not to mention SJ played Hamden and West Haven as well. It was a very competetive league with some realy good teams. THS made every excuse not to play them back then do to the fact that SJ could beat them and ruin there season.
Comment by Ole#65 — December 2nd, 2009 @ 12:31 pm
MasukRules….by your math, that means that Masuk was not the best team in the SWC last year. Brookfield was. Do you still agree with comment #37?
Comment by Spurrier's Visor — December 2nd, 2009 @ 12:54 pm
rob-northwest did the same thing to us cromwell did last year—-played 8-9 men in box ,dared us to throw,we made no adjustments–its tuff to block 9 on 6-poor coaching? how do you get to goaline and not give bobby kinnebrew the ball?ansonias history in playoffs is to struggle in first round no matter who they play

Holy Cross won the NVL Championship game and earlier in the season shut out St. Paul/Goodwin Tech. Also they beat Ansonia and Wolcott. I really thought they were the best team in the NVL this year.

St, Joes and Trumbull didn’t play for many years because there was a huge brawl a while back, forcing them to stop the rivalry for a while.
