George French, a volunteer assistant coach, has been selected to take over the Derby/O’Brien Tech football program.
French is a 1999 Derby graduate who attended Merrimack College. He was recommended by a seven-man panel, which included Derby Mayor Tony Staffieri and principal Fran Thompson, and approved by the board of education Thursday night.
It’s still upsetting to me whenever I see Derby/O’Brien Tech. For the sake of history and honor, let’s just call them Derby. This program was an elite program in the state for decades. How will you feel if 30 years from now, you find yourself rooting for Greenwich/Wright Tech?
