Football, football, football

by:

Aside from a note or two, it’s been a while since we’ve touted high school football on this space. But the offseason news has been piling up again the dam, so why not open the sluice gates to relieve the pressure:

Movin’ On

The NFL just concluded its draft and, we’re pleased to say a bunch of Connecticut high school football alumni were either drafted or snatched up as unrestricted free agents.

Two of our locals were nabbed pretty high, of course. As many already know, Stamford’s Vlad Ducasse, an offensive lineman at UMass was picked by the hometown Jets late in the second round. Marcus Easley, the Bunnell all-star who walked-on with UConn, was taken high in the fourth round by the Buffalo Bills.

We also saw Middletown’s Amarie Spievey (RB, Iowa) picked by the Detroit Lions; New Haven’s Bruce Campbell (OT, Maryland) taken by the Raiders and Bristol’s Aaron Hernandez (TE, Florida) taken by the New England Patriots — and then dropping a bombshell that he’d failed at least one drug test for marijuana while at Florida.

Afterward, Fairfield Prep’s Garrett Brown (DT, Minnesota) signed a free agent contract with the Chiefs, Stamford’s Alex Joseph (Temple) signed with the Packers and King’s Nate Collins signed with the Giants.

College Beat

We’ve had relatively little news on the college signing front, though the first big one came earlier this week when (surprise!) New Canaan lineman Conor Hanratty declared he will be playing football at Notre Dame, the same school as his father, Terry, starred as an All-American QB in the late 1960s.

Elsewhere, it’s been reported that former New Canaan QB Turner Baty — whose family unceremoniously skipped town a month after the season ended — will be walking on at Georgia.

Incidentally, that’s the same path taken by another New Canaan player,  Zac Renner, who became  something of a walk-on legend down in Athens, but has since transferred to Division III Hamilton (N.Y.) for financial reasons.

Otherwise, things are just heating up. It’s reported that Ridgefield DT Tommy Jordan has at least four offers so far: Florida, Boston College, Duke and Rutgers. …No offers yet for Bethel OT Chris Valenti, but he’s received interest from UConn, Rutgers, Maryland and Boston College. ...6-1, 195-pound WR Shawn Robinson of Trinity Catholic — who really came out of nowhere to make the local hot list (just catches for 250 yards and 4 TD for the ground-oriented Crusaders) — has caught the eye of Boston College, Rutgers and UConn.

Other local recruits appearing on scouting sites: WR Kevin Macari of New Canaan; 6-3, 210 TE Chris Coyne of Staples (Boston College, Northwestern); Bassick DT Brandon Williams; OL Jeff Starr of Brien McMahon.

Statewide you have 6-3, 220 QB Brennden Cullen of Bacon Academy  (UConn, Penn State); RB Shane Anane of Hartford Public; RB Max DeLorenzo of Berlin; RB James Ward of Wilbur Cross … and a few others, but nothing noteworthy (yet).

Of course, let the Casey Cochran watch begin. The junior Masuk QB already received an offer from Boston College.

Got any others, let us know.

The 14th Annual Hall of Fame Classic All-Star Game (Fairfield County vs. New Haven County)

It will be played two weeks after the Governor’s Cup, 7:30 p.m. at Ken Strong Stadium in West Haven. Craig Bruno of Bunnell is the New Haven coach. Tom Dyer of Hillhouse is the New Haven coach.

The rosters, I’m told, are all set. Just waiting for the two chapters to release them.

Still more to get to. We’ll have more football news over the weekend.

Touch ‘Em All: An inside look at high school baseball

by:

Thursday was a big day for baseball as a few games that were postponed earlier in the week were finally played. Would Amity/ND-West Haven live up to the hype, how about the St. Joseph/Trumbull rivalry? Here’s what caught my eye.

Good eye
Assertive –
Amity and ND-West Haven finally played after being postponed twice this week due to rain. Amity’s Joe Ciancola (W 3-0) and Mark Esposito blanked the Green Knights 12-0. The Spartans are now 10-0 overall and ND-WH dropped its’ second straight and is 8-2.

27th heaven –Derby unleashed the beast on Torrington as it won 27-5. Okay, let’s break this down. The Red Raiders scored in every inning except for the first. They scored 10 in the sixth, Brian Dobek hit a grand slam and had six RBIs and Mike Ippolito had six RBIs. Ray Krieger pitched, got the win (3-0) and he had five RBIs. Also the coach, Sumner Sochrin, had an RBI. Well maybe not that last one, but you get the picture.

Double time – Here at Touch ‘Em All we only focus on baseball. However, there are times when my attention is diverted to other things. For example, St. Joseph and Trumbull renwed their rivalries in baseball and boy’s lacrosse on Thursday. And the Cadets won both games by two, baseball was 5-3 Cadets and boy’s lacrosse was 7-5 in favor of the boys in maroon and gold. Coincidence?

An-so-ni-a Super Chargers! –The Chargers have won four in a row after a two-game losing streak on April 14-15. But the interesting thing about Ansonia’s streak is that all of the wins have been decided by two runs or less. In fact three out of the four wins have had the exact same score. The Chargers beat St. Paul 6-5, then took down valley-rival Derby 6-5, next on the chopping block was valley rival Seymour 2-0 and yesterday the Chargers beat Holy Cross 6-5.

Kings of the Hill
Thursday’s best pitching performances
Joey Ciancola and Mark Esposito, Amity –
Both blanked ND-West Haven in a 12-0 win.
Josh Eannotti, Ansonia –Came in the seventh and shut the door in Anosnia’s eight-inning 6-5 win over Holy Cross. He also got the win and is now 2-2.
David Speer, Staples – Struck out six in juts three innings of work in the Wreckers’ 20-3 romp of New Canaan.

Bat Boys
Thursday’s best batting performances
Derby –
Put on a hitting clinic with 27 runs off 25 hits. Dobek and Ippolito had six RBIs apiece and Krieger had five RBIs in a 27-5 win over Torrington.
Brett Michael Doran, Law –Had four RBIs and a two-run homer off three hits in a 12-3 win over Hillhouse.

Touch ‘Em All: An inside look at high school baseball

by:

Another unbeaten team went down on Wednesday as the weather finally let our teams play some baseball, well sort of. Wednesday was a windy, cold day but it couldn’t cool off some of the hotter teams like Amity, Law and Masuk. Grab a blanket, here’s what caught my eye.

Good eye
Law of the land –
Law lost some top tier players from last season’s SCC title team however, that really doesn’t matter anymore. After a 1-3 start the Lawmen have won five straight and have scored 47 runs in the five wins.

Chink in the armor –The Green Knights of Notre Dame-West Haven suffered loss No.1 on the season at the hands of Xavier, 5-3.

Engine, engine No. 9 –Amity won its’ ninth straight game of the season in a 2-0 victory over Shelton. The Spartans are 9-0, 4-0 SCC Housatonic.

He’s a Stud –Congrats to St. Joseph coach Bob Studley who won his 100th career game in a 12-1 triumph over Danbury.

4-for-4 –ND-Fairfield led 3-2 over Newtown before giving up four runs in the top of the seventh. However, the Lancers answered back in the bottom half with four runs of their own and won a wild one 7-6.

Reigning cats –Masukwon its’ second game in a row 13-2 over Barlow. The Panthers are 7-3 but, its’ three losses are to teams in both writers top-10 polls. The Panthers lost to Staples once, 6-4, and Bethel twice. One was 8-3 and the other a 4-3 defeat in extra innings.

Just one? –FairfieldPrep has had some issues this season with leaving guys on base and not capitalizing on hits. Well that was the case in a 7-1 loss to Cheshire. The Jesuits had 11 hits, but only scored once.

Kings of the Hill
Wednesday’s best pitching performances.
Ryan Skelly, Derby –
Struck out five in a complete game 4-0 shutout over St. Paul.
Christian Dzienkiewicz, Ansonia –Struck out five in a complete game 2-0 win over Seymour.
Lou Concato, Amity – Struck out seven in a one-hit complete game shutout victory over Shelton, 2-0.
Gabe Cretella, Seymour –Struck out nine in a 2-0 loss to Ansonia.
Rob Anderson, Bunnell –Struck out 10 in a 9-1 complete game win over Oxford.

Bat Boys
Wednesday’s best batting performances
Ryan Connolly, ND-Fairfield –
Had three RBIs and a game-winning RBI in a 7-6 win over Newtown.
John Testani, Masuk – Hit a grand slam in a 13-2 win over Barlow.
Donte Younger, Central –Had three hits and three RBIs in a 24-3 win over Bassick.
Brendan Nugent, St. Joseph –Had a triple and three RBIs in a 12-1 win over Danbury.
Lou Bisighini, West Haven –Had a two-run homer and scored the winning run in a 7-6 win over Hamden.

Westhill, St. Joseph to resume tie game

by:

By Henry Chisholm
Correspondent

The Westhill/St. Joseph game at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown, N.Y. that ended in a tie will resume on Tuesday, May 11 at 3:45. The game will pick up from the eighth with the score tied at 7. The game was initially played last Saturday but was called due to darkness after Westhill scored the tying run in the top of the seventh. The teams could not resume the game on Sunday because their were no available fields at Cooperstown.

The weekend’s over so lets take a look at the Player of the week from last week, but first, a few things that caught my eye from the weekend.

Good eye
Can I borrow a field? –
St. Joseph and Westhill did end in a tie on Sunday. The two teams played to a 7-7 tie at Cooperstown on Saturday and on Sunday, the two teams couldn’t find a field to play on at Cooperstown. The game ended in a 7-7 tie but, will be resumed next Monday at St. Joseph

Hey, you’re hogging my field –Someone got to finish a game at Cooperstown on Saturday, and that was Masuk who beat Oxford 13-1.

Bridgeport, Bridgeport, big city of dreams –The Bridgeport Baseball Classic took place on Veterans Memorial Field on Saturday. Bassick picked up win No. 1 with a 7-6 triumph over Bullard-Havens. Also Central took out Harding 14-0.

Player of the week
Jack Hennessy, Staples –
Had eight RBIs in two games last week. Also hit a three-run homer in a 14-11 win over Danbury.

Don’t look now but, I think another run just scored. Yesterday was not a good day for pitchers as numerous teams scored double-digit runs. However in Cooperstown, neither St. Joseph nor Westhill could get enough to avoid kissing their sisters, well sort of. Here’s what caught my eye.

Good eye
Plated –There were 17 games reported to the Post yesterday and in them14 teams scored double-digits, two teams (Fairfield Ludlowe and Trumbull) scored 20-plus runs. Also in three of the games both teams scored double-digit runs. Well, I wouldn’t be surprised if all of these teams don’t score again for another week. Save some of those runs, it’s a long season.

Trumbull, is that you? – Trumbull came through with a 23-3 win over Ridgefield yesterday. Yes, the same Trumbull that couldn’t score five runs in a game for the first week and a half of the season. And yes, the same Trumbull that beat Trinity Catholic 12-2. If the Eagles could harness the performances against the Tigers and the Crusaders, watch out FCIAC.

Score one for Central – The Hilltoppers got win No. 1 in a 5-4 triumph over Fairfield Warde. Congrats to Central, it is now 1-5, 1-5 FCIAC.

0-for-3– Derby played Ansonia for the first time as a NVL team. Unfortunately for Derby the Chargers won 6-5. In the Red Raiders’ first season in the NVL they have lost to valley rival Ansonia in football, basketball and now baseball.

Green day – Notre Dame-West Haven won its’ eighth game in a row (8-0) to clinch a spot in the state playoffs. The Green Knights took out rival West Haven 13-3. ND-WH has only been challenged once in a 4-3 win over Shleton on April 16.

2nd time’s the charm – In just his second varsity start Shelton’s Ryan Zahornasky almost threw a no-hitter, keeping Xavier out of the hit column until the sixth inning. Zahornasky got the win in the Gaels’ 3-1 victory. Zahornasky pitched in the ND-WH loss and got a no decision.

Crazy eights — Amity beat Sheehan 8-7 to improve to 8-0.

Still playing – St. Joseph and Westhill played to a 7-7 tie before it got dark at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown, N.Y. Play will resume on Saturday. For more info about the Cadets’ trip to Cooperstown watch this week’s episode of The Diamond Report.

Kings of the hill
Friday’s best pitching performances
Ryan Zahornasky, Shelton –
Got his first win of the season in a 3-1 complete game 2-hitter over Xavier.
Robert Torres, Central – Pitched Central to its first win of the season in a complete game 5-4 victory over Fairfield Warde. Also had five strikeouts

Bat boys
Friday’s best batting performaces
Grant Huebner, Trumbull –
Went 5-for-6 and had two doubles in the Eagles’ 23-3 beatdown of Ridgefield.
Josh Eannotti, Ansonia – Had what turned out to be the game-winning RBI single in the fifth inning in the Chargers’ 6-5 win over valley rival Derby.
Zack Phelan, Foran – Hit a three run home run, had four RBIs and doubled in Foran’s 13-8 win over Guilford.
Cathian Pratt, Oxford – Had the game-winning hit in Oxford’s eight inning 14-13 win over New Fairfield.
Jack Hennessy, Staples – Had a three run homer, a solo shot and went 3-for-5 in a 14-11 win over Danbury.

Notre Dame-Fairfield was caught in another close game, St. Joseph was caught in a unfamiliar position and a Shelton player did something that had only been done twice in the last 12 years. Don’t get caught napping, here’s what caught my eye.

Good Eye
Third times the charm –
Shelton’s Eric Christensen became the third Gael in the last 12 years to go 5-for-5 in a game. In Shleton’s 11-4  win over Cheshire he also had four RBIs.

Shut ‘em down – Stratford’s Axel DeJesus twirled a complete game shutout in a 5-0 win over rival Bunnell on Wednesday. It was Stratford’s first win of the season.

McMahon up – St. Joseph suffered its first loss of the season, 6-3 to McMahon. The Cadets (6-1, 4-1, FCIAC) gave up 11 hits and had a season-high four errors.

High-25 – Masuk and ND-Fairfield combined for 25 runs and 26 hits in a seven inning battle royale that would make any pitcher want to ice down his arm. Masuk won 13-12 but, had to use four pitchers to do it. The Lancers used four as well.

King of the hill
Wednesday’s best pitching performance

Dan St. George, Shelton – Struck out nine en route to an 11-4 win over Cheshire.

Bat boy
Wednesday’s best batting performance
Eric Christensen, Shelton –
Became the just the third Gael in the last 12 years to go 5-for-5 in a game as Shelton beat Cheshire 11-4.

Monday had a fair share of close games and good matchups. Foran and Law had a rematch of the 2009 SCC championship, ND-West Haven traveled to Fairfield to take on Prep and Ludlowe brought the lumber to Darien. Yeah, I know its Wednsday but, look! Here’s what caught my eye.

Good eye
Deja vu –
Law had a bit of deja vu as it beat Foran 2-1 in a rematch of the 2009 SCC title game. Brian Ward struck out nine for Foran but took his second loss in a row. Josh Rouse drove in the go-ahead run in the third and Brett Michael Doran kept Foran off the board the rest of the way.

No fair – Fairfield Ludlowe was held to its lowest run total (5) and hit total (6) of the season against Darien. However, the Falcons aren’t just a good hitting team, as Alex Wright pitched a complete game and only gave up three hits to the Blue Wave. Ludlowe (7-0, 5-0 FCIAC) won again 5-2.

Stranded – Fairfield Prep lost to ND-West Haven 4-1 on Monday and in doing so stranded 10 runners. The Jesuits out hit the Green Knights 8-5 and held them scoreless until a four-run fifth blew the game open. Tough loss.

So close, but yet… – ND-Fairfield is a scrappy team, it lacks experience but not heart. However, sometimes heart isn’t enough as the Lancers lost another close game, this time to New Fairfield 14-12. ND out hit New Fairfield 13-9. But after tying the game in the seventh to force extra frames, the Lancers gave up two runs in the eighth inning and lost  to drop to 1-5, 1-1 SWC. ND has lost three games by two runs or less.

K-Zone – Derby pitcher Ryan Skelly and Wolcott pitcher Dan Gambino both struck out 11 on Monday. However, it was Derby’s Skelly who got the win in a 3-2 decision in eight innings.

Off the ground –Trumbull’s bats woke up as it scored a season-high 12 runs in a 12-2 beatdown of Trinity Catholic. The Eagles also got their first dub of the season and are now 1-6. Prior to this game, Trumbull had not scored five runs more in any game all year.

It is high, it is far, it is caught – There were 19 games reported to the Post on Monday and only three of them featured home runs. ND-Fairfield/New Fairfield, Trinity Catholic/Trumbull and Shelton/Sheehan reported homers in their games.

Kings of the hill
Monday’s best pitching performances

Ryan Skelly, Derby – Struck out 11 in a complete game 3-2 win over Wolcott.
Dan Gambino, Wolcott – Struck out 11 in a complete game 3-2 loss to Derby.
Brett Michael Doran, Law – Held Foran to just one run in a 2-1 win.
Alex Wright, Fairfield Ludlowe – Held Darien to just two runs on three hits in a 5-2 win.
Giancarlo Zipper, Bunnell – Struck out eight and only allowed  four hits in a complete game 2-1 win over Brookfield.
Dan Julian, St. Joseph – Struck out eight in a complete game 3-1 win over Fairfield Warde.

Bat boys
Monday’s best batting performances
Gabe Cretella, Seymour –
Had a single, double, triple and a RBI in a 4-1 win over St. Paul.
William Meade, ND-West Haven – Had a go-ahead two-run double in a 4-1 win over Fairfield Prep.
Anthony Matera, Trumbull –Had three hits and a triple in a 12-2 win over Trinity Catholic.
A.J. Acevedo and Carlos Colon, Bullard-Havens – Both were 3-for-4, Acevedo had three RBIs and Colon added two RBIs.
