Governor’s Cup All-Star Rosters Announced

by:

Took a trip with former Trumbull coach and St. Luke’s assistant Jerry McDougall to Cromwell for the unveiling of the rosters for the Connecticut-Rhode Island Governor’s Cup All-Star football game, which will be played June 26 at Rentschler Field in East Hartford (7 p.m.)

It’s pretty good list, considering the usual spate of big-time college players that typically miss the game because of their summer commitments to their new schools. Noticeably absent are players from Staples, Cheshire, New Canaan, Darien, St. Joseph, Greenwich. It should be noted that some of them will be members of the New Haven-Fairfield County all-star game two weeks after the Governor’s Cup.

Anyway, here’s the list. We’ll have the Rhode Island All-Star list shortly.

Regional players are in bold.

I’m so sick of hearing about how Greenwich,Staples,Darien and the rest of the “Gold Coast” never send thier players to play for the Gov. Cup!! I just don’t get it,you would think they would love the oppurtunity to play at “The Rent”. I know they do participate in the other all-star game and get their butts kicked just about every year so you would think they’d want to win one at least.

Look at the coaching staffs over the years and you’ll see why there are no “gold coast” kids playing. Plus, nobody wants to drive 2 hours to practice every day. I agree its a great opportunity and yes, it would be nice to win a game once in a while. A few Stamford kids were on the team when Kevin Jones was the Head Coach. Bridgeport Central kids always play because Coach Cox drives them there.

What does the coaching have to do with playing? I know for a fact that the New Canaan coach was asked to coach several times and has turned it down. I have heard more then a few FCIAC coaches badmouth the Gov Cup game, why? I agree with ct.hsfootball, you would think that you’d want to represent the state and play at rentchler field
