(Offensive) Videos from the Connecticut-Rhode Island Governor’s Cup football game

by:

I know defense was the soup du jour at the 12th Governor’s Cup All-Star football game Saturday at UConn’s Rentschler Field.

Team Connecticut picked off seven passes and Rhode Island picked off four and recovered a fumble. That was basically the story in Connecticut’s 29-7 victory.

But the offenses had to do something to win the game, right?

With what I had to work with on the sidelines … ehhhh, the interceptions don’t look so good on my modest little video camera (no worries, I’m bringing out the big guns for August-December).

But I did manage to capture all of the scoring plays and they look pretty good.

So here’s the scoring recap for Team Connecticut (and, for any Rhode Island fans out there).

Attention New Fairfield and Pomperaug fans: plenty for you in this one.

Ridgefield OT/NG Tommy Jordan commits

by:

Ridgefield High School football tackle Tommy Jordan during practice. Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009

Tommy Jordan has a new first name.

Florida-bound.

The Ridgefield football tackle has committed to the University of Florida, said a brief statement from the high school today.

The Gators were Jordan’s first official offer last summer and, after varying degrees of courtship by Notre Dame, Rutgers, Penn State, Boston College, Syracuse and Duke, he’s decided to stick with the Gators. defending BCS champions.

Jordan’s quite a catch: 6-foot-5, 295-pound, first-team all-state, Connecticut Post All-Star, Walter Camp Team, Connecticut State Lineman of the Year, first-team All-FCIAC and FCIAC Player of the Year. He has also been nominated for the Army All-American Bowl.

We’ll have much, much, much more on Tom’s decision in the coming days and months.

Ask and you shall receive: The NH-FF Hall of Fame Football Classic Rosters

by:

We have a couple of weeks before this kicks off and another game to play first (Saturday’s Governor’s Cup at Rentschler).

But judging by many of the comments left on this blog recently, a lot of you have been absolutely dying to see the rosters for the 14th Annual New Haven County-Fairfield County Hall of Fame Football Classic, which will be held Saturday, July 10 FRIDAY, JULY 9 at West Haven’s Ken Strong Stadium at 7:30 p.m.

And, honestly, I’ve been kind of anxious as well. After all, after last year’s 49-0 loss, the brass of the Ralph DeSantis Fairfield County Chapter have spent the past year sounding the battle horns and galvanizing the base to make sure this year’s team puts on a decidedly better showing.

New Haven County leads the all-time series 9-4 and has won six out of the last seven years.

I attended two of the Fairfield County Chapter events this offseason, and their call to arms has been seared into my brain. From new president John Barbarotta’s gentle, yet persistent, calls to all of the chapter members  to Jerry McDougall‘s fiery, podium-pounding declaration: “We’ve got to make sure we win that game!”

Yeah.

We all know, you can’t win if you don’t have talent, which is why the unveiling of the rosters is a crucial step in winning the battle.

So, without further ado, let’s take a look at the rosters. No positions were given, but I think we know where most of these guys play.

Of course, many of the region’s best recruits are missing — likely off to college already. But after a quick look, I think there’s still plenty of talent on both sides.

But who’s got the best?

I’ll reserve judgment for now. Let us know what you think. Which chapter has the better roster? Vote in our poll below and add your comments. Continue reading

Ladies and Gentlemen, your 2010 CIAC football Classes (4 Divisions!)

by:

While trolling away on Twitter during the World Cup, I innocuously mentioned that the high school football season begins (with practices) in ohhhhh, a little over two months.

The CIAC caught one of my tweets and responded with some very, very, very good  news.

For those of you stuck in 2005, CIAC football (@CIACfb on Twitter) has released its four-division lineup for the 2010 season. Here’s the actual link to the site.

[Pause for raucous applause]

[Pause so I may dance a jig]

OK! Now we’re cookin’! After four years of dreaming, we finally get our hands on an official four-division, three-round playoff lineup. And we finally get a look at what a (somewhat) real football playoff looks line.

So let’s take a look. Maestro, some music if you’ll please.
