Watertown has a new football coach, and it’s not who I personally expected to fill the shoes of retired Roger Ouelette, but it makes sense.
The man in charge is now Mike Veronneau, a 1999 Crosby graduate who was known as ‘Ice Man,’ according to Crosby’s Nick Augelli in the Republican American’s report on Veronneau’s hiring, when he played basketball for the Bulldogs during their 1998 Class L championship.
Veronneau, 29, played receiver and quarterback. He also starred in baseball. But after a stint playing football at St. Anselm College, Veronneau transferred to Central Connecticut State, where he graduated 2005. spent the last six seasons as Crosby’s offensive coordinator.
If you recall, the Bulldogs were pretty darn good on that side of the ball a couple years back.
He was one of five finalists for the gig and takes over a team that went 6-4, including wins over Ansonia, Derby and Seymour.
“I am truly appreciative and honored by this opportunity,” Veronneau told the Republican American’s Mark Jaffee. “I’ve been watching game tapes the past three or four weeks since the interview process began and am aware of the personnel returning and the players’ abilities. We already have a really good start. I am really excited to get going.”

Yep. It’ll be interesting to see what Watertown does this season. I haven’t seen them this off-season, so I don’t know what their team looks like. My first chance at seeing these guys will be on Oct. 22, when Ansonia travels up there.

Watertown never gets anything right. This clown was at least the 3rd choice for the job,and they settled because the idiotic administration required the new coach to keep all of the existing staff. On top of that rumor has it he QUIT on Crosby 3 days into Spring practice after not showing up for the first 2 days. His head coach was supposedly one of his best friends and he told him him that he didnt have time to coach football and he wanted a life.ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!! Thats what we hired? I coach Pop Warner in town and I am sick of the incompetence of the current administration, even considering sending my kid to Holy Cross now,I’ll bite the bullet

Yes as a Matter of fact I do. It wasn’t just two coaches who applied, there was 28 applications from there they interviewed 9 and cut that down to asking 5 back for the second and final interview. I will not put any names out there out of respect but at least 3 of the finalists were better then a person who quit on his team and coach 3 days into spring because he “wanted a life”. Football is your life in the fall when you coach. So he either lied to his coach at Crosby or he lied to our ever incompetent BOE,I tend to think its the former though.
If you think you know more please enlighten me,please,I’m willing to listen

It seems to me waiting to hire a coach 3 weeks before a season starts,is probally why better coaches stayed away from this job…..
