Staples’ Coyne, Murray will play at Yale

Checked out the Staples-Seymour-Shelton scrimmage today at Shelton High School. We’ll have some quick highlights perhaps Monday.

But the Staples coaches tell me two of their captains, ends Pat Murray and Chris Coyne have committed to play at Yale University.

Of the two, Coyne’s name showed up most on national recruiting sites. He’s been listed at approximately 6-foot-4 and 215-pounds. Coyne made 71 tackles, 16 sacks and had two interceptions last year as a junior. On offense as a receiver/tight end he caught 12 passes for 157 yards and a touchdown. As early as mid-last season, several sites reported Boston College and Northwestern giving him looks.

Murray is a 6-foot-3, 200-pound linebacker and tight end who caught 18 passes for 200 yards and a touchdown on offense. He had 52 tackles, 9 sacks and an interception on defense.

Both madeĀ  Staples’ defense rock last year and should again.

  1. One of the members of my blog attended this and mentioned Shelton looked like the better overall team. Did Staples really lose that much?

  2. Staples will be fine. The only problem with them that I saw at the scrimmage was their O-Line and I know they have at least one starter maybe two injured. There is no way there defense won’t be good, they have too much talent and too many returning players on that side of the ball. Also, I actually really liked the skill players and the QB they had on offense especially in the 7 on 7.

I really don’t think you can say any team is better than another after a 10 play scrimmage.

  5. Yeah, they should be fine. 2 D-1 players + easy schedule = good record. C’mon.

  6. luckily for staples they have the easiest schedule in the FCIAC so that is on their side…and as we saw from last year with a program like theirs backups can step up and put up big numbers. the biggest problem i see with staples is perhaps overconfidence due to the fact they have an easy schedule. i forsee a great regular season for staples but an extremely rough time in the post season…i think there are some teams that are alot better then them around the state but only time will tell.

  7. I agree the schedule is awful except for ridgefield and vice versa. Boy in the LL class i’m not sure if 8 teams is better or worse. Think about moving Simsbury/Conard/Pomperaug all up to LL. IF teams like /Greenwich/shelton/Central/Cheshire/Xavier/Glastonbury all lose twice against much harder opponents, they could still be on the outside looking in because those former L teams might only lose once if at all along the way coupled with teams like ridgefield in LL already with patsy schedules. Guess we’ll find out.

  8. Hey Prophet, i see your Staples bashing has started early this year. Here is the bottom line. You said the same things last year about an easy schedule for Staples and they won the FCIAC championship and are 1 play away from winning the LL title. Have you seen New Canaans schedule? You played some great teams in the states the past few years. Plus, you struggled to beat a 6-5 Staples team 2 years ago. And let me remind you that Staples beat a Central team that absolutely DESTROYED you.

  10. This is the most tedious argument on this board, year in and year out. Why don’t New Canaan and Staples demand to schedule each other every year so this can be settled on the field?

    Comment by roto — September 3rd, 2010 @ 8:08 am

  11. you really cant argue schedule between new canaan and staples…it so far apart on the spectrum that your argument sounds ridiculous. as far as this post i was actually give staples a compliment saying they have enough talent on their team that their backups could put up big numbers on most people…but since you have gotten me started luckily for you staples alums who post on this board new canaan and staples will probably get to play eachother in the FCIAC championships this year (only difference is NC will have earned the right to be there, but i digress) and luckily for a NC alum like myself i will get to watch NC rock a down staples team…so ill see you at the game ill be the one holding the “i told you so” sign

    Comment by prophet — September 3rd, 2010 @ 9:59 am

  12. roto i agree with you whole heartedly…i say NC, Staple and Greenwich play eachother every year so there is no he said she said discussions

    Comment by prophet — September 3rd, 2010 @ 10:01 am

  13. mr. poster child i do not believe that you could get mad at the new canaan football team for having subpar competition in states when to get there they beat all the teams like staples and greenwich that are twice the size of new canaan. and staples barely squeaked by central in a game they should have lost and did lose the biggest game of the year in states….so yea congrats on losing the only game that mattered the whole year…if i were you i would concentrate on what you have this year…becuase on offense at your scrimmage i watched the other day it looked pretty thin.

  14. this is the dumbest arguement every year. who cares…if we see them at the fciac championship then talk until then just stew silently.

    Comment by truth — September 3rd, 2010 @ 10:12 am

  15. Lets not forget Bridgeport Central ,until New Canaan can recover and redeem themselves from the “Big City” beatdown (42-7), the Big 3 will continue to be Staples,Central,& Greenwich…

  17. Yale is lucky to get these guys.

    Comment by Trojans12 — September 3rd, 2010 @ 10:21 pm

  18. @prophet Central’s had more than one just good season in the past 7 years: Has been to FCIACs twice (2004 & 2009); State playoffs twice: (2004 and 2007). 2006 with Keith Carlos was a pretty darn, good year too (8-2).

    Comment by Sean Patrick Bowley — September 3rd, 2010 @ 11:19 pm

  19. so you would put central as a top 3 team in the fciac sean? over new canaan greenwich and staples?

    Comment by prophet — September 4th, 2010 @ 11:57 pm

  20. @Prophet No. Just telling you that Central has had more than “one good year in the past 7″

    Comment by Sean Patrick Bowley — September 5th, 2010 @ 10:24 am

  21. i may have jumped the gun on that…clearly i am not the well informed and dont do my homework that well…i stand corrected

  22. Although I’m a new haven county guy I’ll chime in on the fciac board becuase prophet your daddy has been running from ndwh…but they can’t run anymore.
let’s open up this discussion…how can you boast when your team was B*&**&% slapped by a team Staples beat. Although I’m not a Staples or GHS by any stretch…in there state runs they have beat a good West haven team, Seymour before the devestation that has now hit them. And GHS beat Shelton and New Britain in there history of wins…obviosly NC has had some good fciac wins but i must be honest the teams that you beat in the states…lets be honest they can’t come close to the fciac of scc good teams. So please don’t talk about NC being among the states best…Stop running from ndwh and i’ll change my opinion…Tom Jordan or you hanratty…please it isn’t even close. So good luck against bassick lulowe and hehehehe warde….bpt central, xavier, Ghs…as much as I dislike the wreckers youi or your daddy’s record doesn’t compare

  23. Good teams don’t lose 42-7.

    Comment by CT Football — September 6th, 2010 @ 4:14 pm

  24. SPB-

Why wouldn’t the FCIAC hold their title game on Thanksgiving – matching up the top two teams and having the teams they were to play play each other? The road to a State Championship will be brutal this year for the FCIAC final’s team(s) – potentially playing 14 games. Is it purely a gate issue? Take Staples run of Central, Greenwich, Xavier, and Cheshire in three weeks last year and then add another game. Tough road for any of these guys coming out of the FCIAC.

  25. rick berry..your a clown

    Comment by scc fan — September 6th, 2010 @ 8:20 pm

  26. scc fan remember the date it september 6th 2010…NC will win states for the fifth time this season. i wont debate the issue because its simply one mans opinion…but when NC beats NDWH or Masuk i dont want to hear the disrespect anymore. NC lost to Central last year that is a fact…great teams will lose..its how they rebound that makes a statement. Is NC the best team in the State? probably not but there is no doubt they are up there..we can have this conversation again in december. Good luck to your team this season!!!

    Comment by prophet — September 6th, 2010 @ 11:50 pm

  27. prophet your a chooch…stop talking your making the rest of the NC fans look bad.
