Trumbull’s Gaines to miss rest of season?

by:

Disheartening news out of Trumbull today where Trumbull student newspaper Editor-in-Cheif Brett Rosen reports that senior DB and KR Frank Gaines is out for the season with an ACL injury.

The report was confirmed by one other source at Trumbull High School, but Trumbull coach Bob Maffei denied the report Tuesday evening. “He was supposed to get an MRI. We haven’t heard back yet,” Maffei said. “I hope he’s not out. We’ll see.”

Gaines, one of the FCIAC’s best return men who figured to be a key component in Trumbull’s new offense as a senior, was injured in the second half of Trumbull’s 13-9 victory over Wilton and missed all of last week’s 48-0 victory over Westhill.

At right is a video of an interception Gaines made in the first quarter of Trumbull’s win over Wilton.

Movie Night Double Feature: Law at Wilbur Cross; New Canaan at Trinity Catholc

by:

New Canaan High School's Connor Kilbane carries the ball with pressure from Trinity Catholic High School's Sammy Dominguez in football action at Trinity in Stamford, Conn. on Saturday September 25, 2010

For tonight’s activity, campers, we’ll take a look at Law’s Friday trip to New Haven to face Wilbur Cross — and the crazy first half the ensued, thanks to Cross’ electric back James Ward — and then Saturday’s New Canaan at Trinity Catholic game from Alumni Field on Saturday.

So grab your popcorn. Let’s go…

We’ll start with Law at Wilbur Cross first.

We kinda figured Wilbur Cross’ James Ward would have a day in this game. The speedy senior was in true form Friday afternoon at the Wilbur Cross Athletic Complex. He scored five touchdowns in a variety of different ways: long runs, short runs, short passes, long passes, kickoff.

At one point, you’ll hear a witness exclaim, “Every time he touches the ball…”

What surprised us was Law’s response. The Lawmen have an offense, directed by QB Ryan Falaguerra, that answered almost every Ward strike and we ended up with one of the few entertaining SCC Division I vs. II games of the week.

Cross did a nice job pushing through Law’s massive line to consistently stuff backs Mark Elliott and Josh Patterson for minimal gains. So, Falaguerra took to air and, when he wasn’t throwing TD passes to his brother Connor, he was setting up TDs with some well-placed throws to him and Elliott out of the backfield.

Week 3 High School Football Polls

by:

Good evening and yes! it’s Poll Day here on the High School Football Blogs.

And — heaaaaaaayyyy — lookit this:

I’ve been counted!

It’s a happy week when the “Longest Running High School Football Poll in Connecticut History” accepts your votes (sent multiple times through multiple accounts and internet venues, just to be on the safe side).

Of course, it didn’t seem to help much. The NHR’s poll, in my humble opinion, is the worst of the bunch. Coaches were the most in-tune with my selections. The CSWA gets a No. 2 vote from me.

Yes, I’m ranking the polls. Yes I’m know-it-all.

(ahem)

So, let us all have it:

The Elite 8: Week 3

by:

With its 42-0 ‘showcase’ game vs. Pomperaug, Masuk retains the top spot in the regional Elite 8 for Week 3.

Masuk put on a clinic for the defending SWC champions and the casual observers in attendance at Arum Field. In addition to the five touchdowns Casey Cochran threw, Masuk saw no less than four receivers pile up big yards and saw the true potential of junior back Colin Markus emerge in this one. And the defense forced three turnovers and, outside of one 45-yard pass to Matt Paola, held Pomperaug to a measly 22 yards of offense on 31 plays.

Yikes.

The only thing stopping Masuk at this point is itself. Perhaps a dozen penalties were called on the Panthers, nullifying several big plays, including Markus’ long TD run in the second quarter. It’s nothing a season can’t fix. And it’s only Week 2.

They’re among the top 3 or 4 teams in the state at this point. For more, watch Masuk vs. Pomperaug: The Movie! below.

Rounding out the Elite 8: Staples took down Norwalk and remains a strong No. 2. New Canaan fits perfectly at No. 3 with a strong second-half effort vs. Trinity Catholic. Because we haven’t seen them play anyone of consequence yet, Central stays in at No. 4.

No. 5 we’ll stick with Notre Dame-West Haven, with potential to move up based on this week’s results.

Despite some struggles with Danbury, we’re going with Darien at No. 6 because of defense. Ridgefield, which has made mince meat of its first two opponents, debuts in the Elite at No. 7. And, finally, we’re adding Bunnell to No. 8 above several good candidates.

Trending up: Bethel, which pushed Newtown around despite missing four or five regular starters, returns among the ‘Missed’ …Wilton, which did the same to ailing St. Joseph, pops in as well. We threw West Haven in there based solely on record and because they’re a good bet to be 3-0 after this weekend. Shelton returns for its dominant effort vs. SCC Division II Sheehan. We think they’re a good match for the Green Knights Friday night.

Trending down: Newtown. Pomperaug. St. Joseph.

Staying Put: Wilbur Cross (Ward’s great, but where’s the defense?); Oxford (Strong victory over New Fairfield. Stratford up next); Ansonia (Montrell Dobbs is on the short list of top regional backs); Trumbull (Played much better vs. Westhill than they did in beating Wilton).

Below, we present MASUK AT POMPERAUG: THE MOVIE here instead of a separate post. Enjoy.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Your Week 2 Wrap

by:

St. Joseph's Joe Della Vecchia tries to fend off a tackle by Wilton's Rob Keers, bottom, and Mark Peidmont during the second half of their football game Saturday September 25, 2010 at St. Joseph's Dalling Field in Trumbull.

We returned to normal, somewhat, in Week 2.

Masuk's 32, Colin Markus, makes his way upfield as Poperaug trys to tackle during the football game at Southbury Sept. 24, 2010.

Staples put a cap on the groundswell of Norwalk intrigue (at least momentarily).

Masuk sent a message to the rest of the SWC (Frankly, not that anyone needed reminding).

Greenwich isn’t feeling very well.

St. Joseph is in big trouble.

New Canaan is a late riser.

Bethel’s demise has been exaggerated (by me). As has Newtown’s rise (also by me). And we just might have a new No. 2 contender for the SWC Heavyweight Crown: Hello, Bunnell.

The progressive SCC’s conservative crossover week is a pointless endeavor (SCC1 9, SCC2 1 — by a combined score of 274-97. Only North Haven struck a blow for the IIs with its 13-2 victory over Hamden. Law put up the most fight in a losing cause, hanging with James Ward and Wilbur Cross before falling 4).

And finally, I ask the proponents of the 50-point policy to meet me at Camera 3:

Week 2: Masuk showcase and Live Saturday Updates

Lots to get to today, so we won’t waste time with a recap of last night.

Here’s the short version:

Staples: Good.

Greenwich: Not so much.

Prep wins!

Week 2! Friday Night Primer and Live Updates

by:

Good afternoon! Ready or not, Week 2 is upon us.

It’s not exactly a whopper of a schedule, outside of a battle between upstart Norwalk and mainstay Staples, and the SWC grudge match between Pomperaug and Masuk in Southbury.

First off, it’s SCC Crossover week (guh). We’ve illustrated the vast disparity between the league’s two divisions plenty of times over the years, so it’s not even worth dissecting anymore. These games are traditionally mismatches. Yes, it is a down year for SCC 1, and a markedly up year for SCC 2. So it’s possible we’ll see the SCC2 take home more than its usual, obligatory one victory.

Foran at Xavier? I love Foran’s team, but they’re thin up front and decidedly smaller than the state’s No. 1 ranked team. Branford at NDWH, almost the same thing. Only Cheshire-Hillhouse and maybe Lyman Hall-Hand hold any real intrigue. And North Haven has a shot at bringing home an SCC2 victory.

But, like many of my colleagues, I’m just praying the  SCC2 teams get home safe and sound so they can resume their real seasons.

The SWC’s schedule is a bit better. Bunnell-Barlow’s OK. Bethel-Newtown has some potential. Oxford-New Fairfield, maybe… The FCIAC is so-so. New Canaan-Trinity is mildly intriguing. So is St. Joseph-Wilton. …In the NVL, Ansonia-Crosby in isn’t bad, either. As is Derby/O’Brien Tech-Sacred Heart.

But overall, it’s not a week that packs much punch.

Anyway, here’s the quick run down on Week 2, and then the Live Update Blog is below. We get started with Cross-Law at 4 p.m. and go deep into the night.
