Normally, I check Ansonia out during its annual clash with West Haven at Ken Strong Stadium. This year we decided to grab Ansonia about a week earlier.
Since we’re dragging our feet on the 5 NVL question post (soon, I promise), I needed some quick information on Ansonia. Plus, I was absolutely dying to see what Notre Dame-West Haven is going to be all about.
And, as I quickly found out Tuesday afternoon, the Green Knights are going to be about a great, many things.
The reigning No. 1 team in the state simply made mince meat of the Chargers in this controlled scrimmage. Format was your standard 10-play on, 10-play off scrimmage affair for the offenses. So, you could score but still get the ball to finish your series. (They might have tacked on more if your team drove inside the 20-yard lines.)
Anyway, as you’ll see in our first big vid of the year, it was a good day for the Green Knights.
Ansonia fans, avert your eyes.
(And don’t mind the 2009 date on the vid… I’m in preseason mode myself).
So, yeah. As you can see not a lot to scream about on the Ansonia side, although coach Tom Brockett found plenty.
Notre Dame? Well, where to begin? QB Sean Goldrich looked very much at ease controlling the offense. He might as well have had an iced tea back there; Senior RB David Rose played as if the opposing jerseys said “Xavier” and receiver Tirrell Young-Williams (are we using the compound name?) looked like a bolt of lightning, which, as the reigning Class L champion in the 100- and 200-meter dash, he is. The line, which has some Big Mac-sized holes to fill, looked solid.
Defensively: Impressive so far. There were no digits on the jerseys, so it was hard to single anyone out, but there were a lot of white shirts hanging out in Ansonia’s backfield. I scoured my tape for Ansonia highlights. What you saw was pretty much it. I did arrive 15 minutes late, so maybe I missed something…?
Ansonia has just two returning seniors — just two — only one of whom (tailback Montrell Dobbs) played significantly during last year’s 8-3 season. They have some work to do. Junior Elliott Chudwick is your quarterback. He’ll have some weapons with which to work. There are plenty of young kids ready to make themselves known.
But it’s a very young team, especially on Sept. 1.
Big disclaimer coming up: It’s a scrimmage. We don’t crown champs in scrimmages. With two weeks before the season, there’s still much to do. But, an interesting day, nonetheless.
Later, if I can find the time here at Football Central, we’ll scrape together the other football clips from this week into a few highlight reels. Tomorrow, lots more scrimmages to attend. Lots more work to do.

Agreed. The Chargers looked really rusty and ND was just on-point yesterday. Like they hadn’t lost a step.

NDWH will be rea1 good again. That class L is tough with Masuk, NC, and NDWH. Ansonia will still get to 8 wins due to the NVL conference schedule. That should be enough to be top 8 in S.

BTW, SPB, we’re in 2010, not 2009.

@Remmy I know, didn’t you read the post?

I kind of skipped over that after you told me to “avert my eyes”.

The Class L looks mighty impressive this year. It’s hard to get a good read on ND because of Ansonias lack of experience, though ND should be the team to beat in the L. Does anybody know the strength of the Fairfield Schools?

Scrimmages don’t tell us much, but in this case it confirms that
1. ND should be an offensive juggernaut once again. Last yr they averaged ~40 pts per game, their lowest score was 28 pts. That was a very productive offense! They lost big playmaker WR Kinary and some huge lineman but return lots of talent and speed that will make them tough to stop.
2. Ansonia is -very- young. The Chargers have their work cut out for them in the next couple weeks. I’m sure they will settle down and groom the young guys enough to be in the thick of the NVL race. Even if it proves to be a “down year”, with the expanded playoff field I’d venture that the Chargers will still be a top 8 team in the small class division. Time will tell. Get to work, guys!

Welcome back, Ray. It sure looks that way.

Looks like the freshman Ray speaks of (Newsome) will be starting at flanker, not RB. That’s Montrell’s job. Newsome will likely be the back-up, as Lester (last year’s freshman quarterback) is out with a shoulder injury.

ND is the team beat! Not to mention Gulian Carmona was side line by a shoulder injury a jr 6′ 235 pounds great on DL-OL as potential to become a spark on both sides of the field

Roc Bell, he lost 5 lbs. in the 20 minutes since you posted about him on the other thread?
Comment by roto — September 3rd, 2010 @ 8:01 am
I was corrected by is teammate. I will give the facts next time around
Comment by Roc Bell — September 3rd, 2010 @ 7:55 pm
No offense Roc, but 6′ 235 lbs is kinda small for a lineman these days. Big for a linebacker, though. I will agree with you, NDWH will be a power and should be #1 to start the year.
