St. Joseph seems to be the trendy FCIAC pick this season, which is completely understandable for a couple reasons:
A) The Hogs return Tyler Matakevich and Joe Della Vecchia and basically everybody else save for Jason Mawicke (now at Staples) and some linemen. B) Picking the usual suspects kinda gets boring.
Anyway, St. Joe looked pretty dominant in this scrimmage vs. Pomperaug on Wednesday afternoon in Southbury. Matakevich was running wild, Della Vecchia was throwing darts and the defense pretty much controlled the line of scrimmage all afternoon.
It’s an impressive, impressive show by Joe D’s kids as you’ll see in a moment.
But keep in mind, while Pomperaug looked like it was no match, the Panthers came into the scrimmage as a shell of itself. Yes, the Maxen twins — LB/FB Kevin and OL/DL Willie, who are two of the top-returning players in the SWC — were there, and so was junior QB Kellen Croce. But that’s about it. Twelve players missed the game including five starters. The lines were pretty much decimated. Both receivers, including Matt Paola, were out.
Just like Ansonia the day before, there just weren’t any highlights for Pompy in this one. So consider this more of a St. Joseph showcase than one for Pomperaug.
And, at times, it was quite a showcase.
Incidentally, that No. 1 running around at the end, scoring a touchdown for Pomperaug goes by the name of Dylan McAllister. Ring any bells, Ansonia fans?
Next up:We take a trip south for Masuk vs. Shelton.

ND is a much better team offensively & defensively. Not to mention ND have a JR that was side line by a shoulder injury. Gulian Carmona 6′ feet 240 pounds his such a spark on DL OL

Roc Bell- how does that have anything to do with this scrimage? Unless you have a perspective on the teams in this scrimmage your statement holds no water. are you trying to say ND is better then Pompy or Joes? And which notre dame do you speak of…west haven of fairfield? and out of curiosity were you at this scrimmage…do you have any credible facts to back up your argument? what makes NDs offense and defenst better…are their players more talented…are they better coached? as far a Carmona goes…6 feet 240 as a lineman is not exactly a giant when you have guys like tom jordan and conner hanratty in this state. and what makes him such a spark how has he done in scrimmages this year…how many tackles did he have last year? How many sacks? when you make a statement that comes out of nowhere back it up so that a layman like myself can better understand where you have come up with your deductions dr. holmes…without them you sound more like mr. bean.

Pomperaug is a shadow of its former self. This team is mediocre this year. Joe’s is very good and they’ll have their chance to prove themselves later in the season. Thanks Roc for your mystery assertion.

At least we won’t have to read an online argument about who won this scrimmage this year.

in all fairness sean i thought my response was well versed and as delicate as it could be. sure there were some jabs here and there but for the most part i thought it was well thought out with a solid base of relevant questions.
