This isn’t really an impressive list of games this week. I think that the two big games (Masuk/Pomperaug and Staples/Norwalk) are going to end up in blowouts. I actually might end up in Derby tonight. I’d like to see how good Coggins is and if that SH air attack is for real. I’ll probably end up at Bethel on Saturday night.

Hello to all the good hearted fans of CT high school football (and you too Ray Brown). We contemplated whether to continue this gig. Sean doesn’t pay very well. But in the end, we just couldn’t resist.

Away we go with a Week 2 preview:

Warde @ Prince Tech- At least somebody listened to my advice last year about padding your record by playing tech schools. Coach Dell is no fool.

New Canaan @ Trinity Catholic- When you’ve got a D-1 caliber wide receiver, throw him the ball. A lot. New Canaan will demonstrate with Macari. There was a lot of bickering on the blog this week about recruiting. Let’s set the record straight right now. New Canaan does not recruit. Trinity Catholic does, but apparently only for basketball.

Wilton @ St. Joe’s- Matekevich who? Cadets roll to 2-0 start.

Masuk @ Pomperaug- I’m buying into the hype. Masuk may win every league game by two scores, most weeks by much more than that. I loved last year’s Pomperaug team, but they lost too much. For a good laugh, however, check out the Waterbury Republican’s interview of the Maxey twins. Funny kids, but they won’t be laughing much tonight. Masuk wins the Panther Bowl.

Staples @ Norwalk- Can the Bears keep the momentum going? How bad would that be for the blog? We’d have a quiet year from Greenwich, Staples, Pomperaug, ND-WH and Ansonia. It would basically be MasukRules doing a point –counterpoint with himself. Point- “I think Masuk should be ranked higher.” Counterpoint- “I think Masuk should be ranked much higher.”

Stamford @ Greenwich- Will Greenwich lose to another city school doormat? No.

Hyde @ Cromwell – Two Class S mainstays square off early in the year. Hyde is currently ranked #11 in the NH Register poll. Lots of respect for the Howling Wolves.

Naugatuck @ Torrington- The NVL Blog is buzzing, and after impressive wins by both in Week 1, the hype may be deserved. According to their coaches and former players, this is the best Naugy team since 2001.

Branford @ ND-WH- Crossover week in the SCC. In other words, the JV’s get their chance to shine under the bright lights! Branford is in the hunt in D-2, but this has bounce back game written all over it for the Green Knights.

Foran @ Xavier- Very impressed with Schumitz of Foran, but Xavier’s defense will give him fits.

Glastonbury @ Southington – Not sure how much Glastonbury has left after their recent run of success the past two years. Marquee game in the CCC.

Ansonia @ Crosby- Upset alert. Young Charger team probably can’t contain a Crosby team that put up a fight against St. Joe’s. They will have to outscore the Bulldogs in Waterbury tonight. Charger fans are worried.

Sacred Heart @ Derby- Sacred Heart has one of the best wide receivers in the state in sophomore Dave Coggins. Remember the name. He may be good enough to beat the Red Raiders, who may struggle again this year. Coach George French has the right idea implementing a new style in Derby, but doesn’t have the horses.

Windsor @ New Britain – Windsor smacked Simsbury around last week. Might be tougher tonight.

Harding @ McMahon – The Constitution Bowl. Get it? Presidents vs Senators.

Farmington @ Conard – Why is Conard ranked #13 in the NH Register Poll? Do the writers just remember voting for them last year or do they actually have something?

Berlin @ Northwest Catholic – Saturday morning meeting of two playoff teams from a year ago. Berlin looks strong again.

    enjoy the games!

  3. WELCOME BACK! Biting, as always. I’ve been raked for saying less. …Wish I’d thought of “Constitution Bowl” for the Harding-McMahon game. …Maybe “Veto Bowl” or “Checks/Balances Bowl” …Then, I guess we’d need the Westville Judges and the Georgetown (Redding) Congressmen involved.

Conard’s ranked b/c they have Espo and will roll through their schedule again. That’s the best explanation I can give you. But, didn’t you hear? The NHR Poll doesn’t count this week. Morelli cut me out of it for being an hour late with votes.

…Yes, New Canaan doesn’t recruit. That was a decision by Baty’s family to get him a starting showcase gig. NC was stuck in a tough spot with that mess.

Agree with you on Crosby. That’s not going to be an easy game for the Chargers, who were an errant knee away from losing the Woodland game. (I have video of the controversial play, but haven’t got around to posting).

    What? No Prep-Griswold?

LOL on MasukRules. Praying that doomsday scenario doesn’t happen.

  4. BHSFAN says:

Newtown-Bethel game will be played at Danbury High School. It could be another tough game for Bethel which limps into the game with half a dozen key two-way starters either out or hurting.

  5. tp says:

If Pomperaug is able to pull off the victory tonight…I wonder what the reaction will be. Will people say the SWC is weak or down because the “so called” top dog is knocked off by an unranked team. Or will the talk be that the SWC is stronger than people think as you can add Pompy in on the discussion of strong teams from that conference? Hmmm…

  6. Indeed, it would certainly throw a wrench in the works. I wouldn’t put it past Pomperaug. We’ll see…

  7. ray brown says:

good call on crosby game bay

  8. will says:

When did West Haven become an afterthought? They play in toughest div 1 in state. Cheshire,ND, Hand,Wibur Cross and Westies. They had a few 6-4,5-5 seasons but look who they play. They have as many skill players as the top teams. After this week they will be 3-0 beating 2 LL teams and a L team. St Joes stinks and half the teams in your elite 8 couldnt stay with westie speed.

  9. Westies didn’t show us much last year. Their first game of the year wasn’t exactly an eye-opener (or was it?), 8-6 over Amity. And they really can’t plant a flag after beating Guilford.
