The regular season is over and, while 11 lucky regional teams will get to test their mettle in the CIAC state tournament, for most regional team the football season is already a distant memory.
Practice for basketball or hockey or swimming or wrestling gets underway this week. The regular season for winter starts in two weeks.
So while we prepare for the state quarterfinals and the rest of our area athlete prepare for the winter season, or a long deserved break, we will begin to take stock of the best players in the region.
So what we’re going to do is start the debate on who the best players were at each position. There is a more involved system going on behind the scenes at Hearst Connecticut Newsgroup for an all-area team that will be unveiled around Christmas wee, but here’s a chance for players and fans to lobby for their top picks.
Here are the categories.
It’s going to require a lot of thought on your part because picking these teams are tantamount to moving Chess pieces around a board.
We would like your TOP 2 in the following positions, TOP 4 in offensive line. There can be NO repeat selections.
OFFENSE: QUARTERBACK, RECEIVER/END, RUNNING BACK, OFFENSIVE LINE (4), KICKER
DEFENSE: DEFENSIVE LINE, LINEBACKER, DEFENSIVE BACK, PUNTER
ALL-PURPOSE (This spot is reserved for men who excel in a variety of spots and don’t fit into any of the above categories).
PLAYER OF THE YEAR: You can pick anybody from above.
*Important*: You must list them like this:
QB: name, name.
RB: name, name.
WR: name, name…
Any comments MUST come after the selections.
The Connecticut Post, Stamford Advocate, Danbury NewsTimes and Greenwich Time coverage area includes:
All of the FCIAC, all of the SWC and the following schools from the SCC, NVL and CCC: Shelton, Law, Foran, Amity, Notre Dame-WH, West Haven, Fairfield Prep, Ansonia, Seymour, Derby/O‘Brien Tech, Bullard-Havens, Platt Tech, Abbott Tech. (A few fringe teams are being discontinued from our coverage area because they never called our offices to report their games this season).
All other teams are ineligible. This is a regional awards list, so as much as many of you would love to chime in on your favorite players from around the state, please don’t.
(An aside: I’m curious to see how everybody does with this project. Enjoy).

great idea but cant pick because i havent seen majority of fciac and swc teams so i couldnt make honest choices.of course my pick for player of year would be dobbs.

Jon Testani-Masuk and Brian Kelly-Brookfield
Player of the Year:
If it’s just based on stats is Cochran or Dobbs, I’d go Cochran
If it’s Most Valuable:
It’s Kelly or Testani, I’d go Kelly
My thoughts were when in doubt go with the senior, that’s why I had Donofrio over Leaon Gordon of Brookfield (Gordon highest YPC of rushers with 700+ yards)
I look forward to who else is nominated
Sorry just saw the four OL change
Add in:

Player of the Year: Terio
Trumbull doesn’t make FCIACs without him. On defense, he’s a shut-down corner and is one of the fastest guys on the field and will catch just about anything.
Shoot! Listed Terio twice.

LB- Wood, Ansonia
K- Beatty, Pomperaug — Testani, Masuk (saw these guys last year in the SWC title game; AWESOME kickers)
Player of the Year- Dobbs, Ansonia
I am basing this off of kids I’ve seen (either in person or on film). I haven’t seen most of the FCIAC or SWC, so I don’t have a very long list of kids to add here. There is a lot of talent from Naugatuck up through the Waterbury area that we cannot add here. I would have had a nice list for you guys.
@Remmy — I understand. Good enough.

One note: Shullman definitely deserves to be in the mix. McDonough and Armstrong – the two Ram names bandied about on D – are both excellent players, but Shullman is the unit’s MVP, IMO. They will sorely miss him next season.
QB: Cochran, DellaVechia
RB: Dobbs, Kevin Phillips (WH)
WR: Macari, Chisolm
OL: Hanratty, Jordan, Valenti
K: Beatty (Pomp)
All Purpose (if not D-back or receiver): Tirrell Young-Williams (ND-WH)
I’m about all tapped out, but re: Young-Williams, I can’t find stats for INT returned for touchdown or punt return for TD, but he must be at or near top of the state in both. If you back into his TD total of 12 through eight games, four came through means other than receiving. Adjusted for strength of schedule, MaxPreps has him as #9 in INTs, # 3 in receiving and #4 in scoring. And you know he is the fastest player in CT, bar none.
Not that I can think of anyone to nominate from the team, but Fairfield Prep is still in your coverage area, right?

Why is there no TE position?
@Everybody – It’s END. WRs and TEs.
I think that’s pretty unfair. Everybody’s just going to go for the high scoring WRs, no one will vote for TEs. Oh well.
Have to say, as I filled out my picks, there are some great players in this region for 2010. It might be the overall best football class in CT history. Very fun to watch these kids step it up and be leaders for their teams – they are doing amazing things both on the field and in the classroom.

WIDE RECEIVER—Patrick Jordan, New Milford—-went unnoticed all year, but ask any corner who had to cover him how difficult it was. Made big play after big play all year in every game. Imagine if he played for a good team, would easily be all state. Actually had Masuk star Casey Cochrans 1st pick of the season.

Ummm, what??
How many D1 players out of this group?
A couple of linemen and a transplanted QB for the future. But best in history?
Jeez, not even close.
Sorry guys. Been bad internet lately from Comcast. Tons of comments published just now.
By the Way, you CAN put a repeat for ‘Player of the Year’ ….because that’s gotta be one of your guys in there.
I’ve seen A LOT of games this year and I feel that I have a pretty good idea of the players from each team.

@CT FB – Very nice list. Although you listed Jordan twice. Give someone else a chance at OL or DL?
DL- Murray (Staples), #71 (Harding)……yes Harding
Do not know the Harding player’s name and can’t find it listed anywhere, but based on what I saw the two times I watched him, he definitely deserves consideration.
@CTFB – Very good.

DB: Kelly (Brookfield), Mulligan (St. Joes.)
P: Mawicke (Staples)
All Purpose: Terio (Trumbull)
Player of the Year: Dobbs
I would have put James Ward from Cross and Jack Debiase from Woodland in there somewhere, but I guess they aren’t eligible. At the same time I think Matakevich missed too much time this season to be included.
@Dude – Yes. Not eligible. We’ve included them in the past, but they don’t seem to interested in calling in box scores to us. So…
sorry, realize now that “ol” testani is will testani from trumbull – please “delete” previous comment.
No one in the Fciac can light up a score board or change a game……faster and more often than Phil Terio, on Trumbull. He is a huge threat.playing both ways.

any person on this post not putting Macari as at least one of two Top WR in the area has lost all credibility. You also need the land animal of Hanratty on for best O-line. The 30 division 1 schools recruiting him had him right up there with Jordan of ridgefield…i dont see anyone else being recruited like them in the rest of the state

On a side note… Its hard to include Coyne without Murray or Murray without Coyne on the DL… seems like they really feed off each other, and its hard to tell which is better, though Murray seems more like a LB… regardless, either of them are too good to be left of this list. Between the two of them and Kunze of Darien, they are the runaway top DL in the region

WR: Macari, Chisolm
OL: Jordan, Hanratty, Valenti, Wright
K: Testani, O’dea
DL: Murray, Kunze

P: Mawicke
All-Purpose: Jacobs, Diaz/Testani
Player of the Year: Toss up between Dobbs, Macari, Cochran, and others
SPB – Will the actual rankings be the same format as this? 2 QB’s, 4 OL, 1 Player of the year, etc.?
@Remmy – Matt Paola kicked last year for Pomperaug in the SWC Championship (not Eric Beatty). Paola was out all year with an injury which is why Beatty is kicking this year. Paola kicked 6 out of 7 into the end zone in that game as a sophomore. Watch for him next year. He already has D1 Colleges going after him.
No. The team goes like this (with variations depending on the year):
OFFENSE: QB, RB, RB, E, E, E, OL, OL, OL, OL, OL, K
DEFENSE: DL DL DL LB LB LB LB DB DB DB P
All-purpose
Player of the Year.
The defensive categories can be changed. We assign a roving spot to one of the three positions (above, I’ve listed it as LB, because that’s typically the strongest position.
Sometimes we go with three RBs and two Ends. But with all the spread offenses, we’ll likely go 2 RBs and 3 Ends.
QB: Della Vecchia Cochran
RB: Markus Hobbs
WR:Macari Mulligan
OL:Hanratty Nicklaus Adzima Wright
K:Testani DoCarmo
DL: Kunze Jordan
LB: Matakevich Gau
DB:Terio Kramer
P: Mawicke
all purpose: Milne
ctfb2010, I’ve watched a lot of FCIAC games this year and Macari is the real deal and will be a player at the next level but when talking Player of the Year, #24 on Staples has done it all. 16 or 17 td’s, 7 int’s, 2 punt returns taken all the way and just south of 1000 yards rushing. He also went behind center once their QB went down. He did it “large” in all 3 phases of the game.
How could and MVP conversation not include Jacobs?
QB: Cochran (Masuk), Della Vechia (SJ)
WR: Chisolm (Bunnell), Macari (New Canaan)
RB: Dobbs (Ansonia), Markus (Masuk)
OL: Jordan (Ridgefield), Hanratty (New Canaan), Valenti (Bethel), Dion Koumoutseas (Brookfield)
K: Testani (Masuk)
P: Mawicke (Staples)
DL: Maxen (Pomperaug), Wright (Masuk)
LB: Maxen (Pomperaug), Flynn (Masuk)
DB: Diaz (Masuk), Kelly (Brookfield)
All-Purpose: Birdsell (Bethel)
Player of The Year: Dobbs (Ansonia)
I saw all of the above play, but I’m sure that I missed other worthy players. Birdsell may seem an odd choice for All-Purpose, but having watched him rush for over 900 yards, lead his team in tackles, cover kick offs and punts like noone else, and do it all without a tremendous amount of God-given ability, I think he deserves some kind of recognition. Next choice would be Testani of Masuk
who is Birdsell…you can always tell when its a player writing one of these up. all of a sudden you have people on these lists that have no business on them. we dont car about a lack of GOD-GIVEN talent around here. we want to know who the best is. and clearly the best is dobbs, cochran, macari and kunze. but to put guys on this list just because they play at your highschool or because they are secretly you, well that is just ridiculous.
QB- Cochran, Castelot
RB- Dobbs, Markus
WR- Macari, Chisolm
OL- Jordan, Hanratty, Wright, Valenti
DL- Murray, Maxen
LB- Weil, Matakevich
DB- Teatani, Flynn
Have seen all players play
@BWP – Birdsell is from Bethel. He’s good. Almost single-handedly won that Newtown game (along with Schmidt). He absolutely deserves to be considered.
Man, you’re an angry dude. Let’s stop the derisiveness, here and toward others.
BWP, you go on a rant (different thread) about how Darien is going to wipe out Wethersfield then demolish Masuk because they are overrated THEN you have the nerve to call out someone else because you think they are serving up home cooking. GET SERIOUS MAN. If you don’t have something constructive to add to the thread then stuff a sock in it. The Wave have enjoyed a great season this year. No need to belittle others and treat this board as your personal landfill.
On the money! Rock(s) On!
On The Money!! ROCK(s) ON!!
When looking at the QB’s please let’s understand a very important subtlety that get’s only a little mention.
Casey Cochran’s gaudy numbers are compiled in about half the game time as any of the other top qb’s mentioned. Between the 50 point rule, and the general classiness of the Masuk program, he’s rarely visible in the second half, and I don’t think he’s taken many 4th quarter snaps all year- if he did, you could add another 25-40% to his state leading stats.
… oh and Cochran and Markus are juniors, not seniors as listed. hard to believe Masuk will return so much of the core next year.
@The Voice – Dammit … You’re right. I have half the Masuk squad listed as seniors. They ARE JUNIORS. (grrr)
@The Voice – Some would argue that with a tougher schedule he would have more snaps and less gaudy numbers. I don’t think that’s the case though. Masuk is the team I’m most interested to watch in the post season.
QB- Cochran (Masuk)
RB-Donofrio (oxford)
WR-Macari (New Cannan)
OL-Wright (Masuk)
K-Testani (Masuk)
DB-Flynn (Masuk)
LB-Diaz (Masuk)
#82 Dr. Kevorkian, helps that he is throwing to Perimenis, Milone, Diaz, Testani,Cusmano, and Markus out of the backfield. This will create matchup problems for most defenses regardless of the conference they play in.
Milano’s numbers at New Canaan are just as good as Cochran’s and he didnt get to play after the 1st quarter for the first 5 games of the season. perhaps that why he came out flat at St. Joe’s. Milano, also a junior, is just as good as Cochran, stats-wise at least.
Anyone interested in a few more Brian Kelly All-purpose votes?
Macari is the real deal. Anyone that hasn’t listed him, simply hasn’t witnessed him play. I’m converted and he’s the best WR I’ve witnessed in a couple of years. Defending him is a chore. Good size, excellent speed, runs great/crisp routes and is a master of the subtleties. As Macari goes, so does NC’s offense. The only way you can stop him is to control him. Two man coverage, heavy contact at the line and an athletic coverage guy ready when he busts through. Not easy. Masuk will need to match Dias on him as the coverage guy. Defensively, you need to occupy/defend this kid until the whistle blows.
CT Football – I AGREE with you. The fact that they play such good defense caps the 50 point rule at 50 points…
Anyone not showing up at Shelton High Saturday afternoon???

Milanos numbers do mirror Cocheran but thats where the comparison ends. On the out patterns Cocheran throws line drives and milano simply does not have the arm strength to get the ball to the out men quickly. A good defensive team will pick though throws off. Darien should have had three picks but the D-backs couldn’
t hold onto the ball. Milano has done a great job for the Rams and will continue to getr better.
I understand stats have alot to do with making these choices but what are you using to determine the OL Player of the Year?
I would think you could pick an Oline team/squad of the Year using those same stat’s and considerations, but player???
