The All-FCIAC football teams have been announced.
Lots and lots and lots of players selected. They list first-team offense and defense, second-team offense and defense and then honorable mention for all three divisions.
Congratulations to all the kids.
It is, however, kind of excessive from my seat, as well as others’. Pat Pickens did the math and he counted 209 kids who were named all-FCIAC, which averages out to 11 players selected per team. Eighty-seven kids can say they’re first team.
Hey, if that’s how they want to roll…

Someone please double-check my math…I think I counted THIRTY running backs (including those with two positions listed)!!
The Hour has Gau, Mawicke, Yeager, Murray, Nicklas and Abonyi (all Staples, except Abonyi, who’s from McMahon) in LL, and Hutchins, Crowell and Spencer (all Weston) in S.
James– Chris O’Dea from Ridgefield has better numbers as PK than either Staples or Greenwich kickers.
Wow. This totally takes away from the honor. It is so diluted. How many kids DID NOT get some sort of recognition? The FCIAC coaches need to re-evaluate how they pick their teams. The award has no meaning anymore.
Dr. Von Nostran, I think you are right….THIRTY running backs. SPB, how many teams do you need????
Staples and New Canaan each have 20 honorees. Does that mean that non starters were selected?
Other FCIAC sports select a “true” All-FCIAC team (in addition to by-division). Not sure why in football it is not selected, but here is a viewpoint to debate:
Offense (spread-type):
QB Della Vecchia
RB Rivas
WR Macari
WR Pauciello
WR Robinson
TE Murray
OL Hanratty
OL Kunze
OL Nicklas
OL Testani
OL Jordan
P Mawicke
Defense (4-3-4):
DL Coyne
DL Kunze
DL Murray
DL Pierre-Louis
LB Cherry
LB Gau
LB Weil
CB Milne
SS Costigan
FS Jacobs
CB Terio
K Shapiro
SPB, I know you knew him during his time at Woodland, but what have you heard about Chris Anderson leaving UNH to possibly take the open Glastonbury job??
Rumor Mill — just curious…why is the Glastonbury job open? Did it have anything to do with coach’s comments on TV after Staples game?
Yes, Glastonbury’s Peter Pfeffer has resigned.
Every RB in the FCIAC made the team. Congratulations.
JB, Your gonna put Cherry at LB over Matakevich??
Oh and Pauciello over Mulligan??? I mean go look at the numbers.
PUUUT: Tough to look at the numbers for either, as Trumbull has neglected to post statistics.
I will say, though, that JB has opted for reputation and “recruitability” over actual production. I saw one Trinity game this year (Darien), and Robinson was a virtual non-factor: a couple drops, one nice catch, and very little “threat” against a decent Blue Wave secondary. Kevin Macari, a true all-conference player, had nearly twice as many touchdowns (25) as Robinson had catches (13). I’m sure the kid’s got talent, and Trinity’s offense wasn’t conducive to monster stats, but a reception a game isn’t enough to warrant honors – especially in aN 11-man FCIAC all-star squad.
Other quibbles: Kunze two ways (if anyone’s going both ways for me, it’s Jordan or Hanratty), Murray two ways, and ONE player from the FCIAC’s second-best team (SJ).
Talk about diluting the honor, by my count, 20 players each from Staples and New Canaan made a team.
That must mean that non starters are even being honored.
All of NC’s honorees were “starters.” However, there were 3 DEs honored (Granito, Brainard and Leeming) – two of whom (Granito and Brainard) were injured at various points throughout the season. Also, Shapiro is a kicker.
But your basic premise is correct. Merely playing for one of the best teams in the league should not be enough to earn All-Conference honors.
The solution: scrap the “division team” format (the East’s second team is arguably better than the other two divisions’ first teams) and do a First/Second/HM for the entire league.
JB- How could you think Shapiro for best Kicker in FCIAC. Check stats, not even in top 3.
Remember:
When everyone is all-conference, no one is all-conference.
FCIAC has an image as self-praising in the rest of the state, and this doesn’t exactly do anything to reduce that image.
Too bad.
Were these teams selected before Thanksgiving? It seems this is a pre-meltdown Darien if they have 7 first team all FCIAC Defensive players.
A couple of things we know about the FCIAC at large. One, they have a number of outstanding programs and teams. Two, the teams the produce are very well coached and possess extremely competitive kids. Three, they can play with anyone in the state, but fall far behind their equal to the East, the SCC, in terms of state titles and #1 teams. I think the FCIAC always has two or three of the ten best teams in Connecticut. However, they seem to struggle with the ‘Best of the Best.’
Cochran teams and SCC teams always seem to beat the FCIAC head up. Please, spare me the NC beating Hand argument. Everyone knew that NC was the better team, plus I don’t think anyone really thought Hand was the second best team in the SCC. What I mean is, teams like Staples losing to Cheshire last year and West Haven getting the better of Greenwich in the 2002 title game. Both those games were for the #1 ranking.
SPB — any luck finding an All State list?
somebody give me a list of players to watch NEXT season, please
