  1. Extra bonus points if you can name all of the players in the photo.

When does new haven register team come out? CT-Post Team?

  3. Pequot says:

    CLASS S

    OFFENSE
WR — Mitchell Johnson, Morgan (No receivers from Morgan including Nany Bah deserve this).
TE — Mitchell King, Valley Regional/Old Lyme (Deserves to be all state but is a better defensive player than offensive player. He wasn’t even the best TE in the league).
QB — Jimmy Fairfield-Sonn, Valley Regional/Old Lyme (This spot should have gone to Erich Berzinskas from Morgan. He will have a bigger and more impressive college career than any senior in the state this year.) Fairfield-Sonn should have been the first team utility man.
OL — Brandon Cohn, Old Saybrook/Westbrook (No one from OSW deserves anything this year except maybe the kicker who wasn’t even all conference because they did an awful job picking these things)

    DEFENSE
DL — Dave Wheeler, Coginchaug (I’ve seen one of the first team DL play four times this year. Wheeler is a better player. If he wasn’t injured and out for the year in game six…)
DL — Robert Fairweather, Hyde (Kid deserves it and is a monster. Played injured for most of the year and was the most physically impressive player in the Pequot since Bruce Campbell, who I assume no one on the gold coast has heard of).
LB — John Hart, North Branford (Probably the 8th best LB in the Pequot)
LB — Nate Scott, Canton (No one from Canton deserves anything).
LB — Marquez Leigh, Hyde (Nope)
DB — Lorenzo Hart, Cromwell (Nope)
DB — Shaquille Eddie, Hyde (Nope)

Don’t think they did a great job with these.

  4. Assist to The Lonesome Polecat (Ned G) for getting the spellings corrected.

  5. football fan says:

If you look at this list there are a few names that should not be this list but I guess the coaches have the if you vote for my guy I will vote for yours.Cohn was the worst in CT , watched OSW a few times this year and he was the weak link on the line. The whole team where benched in the Valley game , Haddam-Killingworth had there JV in for a Half and still couldn’t score and Wolcott tech looked good against him. Start giving these things by posted stats and less on coaches votes . Most coaches have never seenthese players .

  6. Fred says:

Chris O’Dea (LL Punter) hasn’t punted since Pop-Warner. Should be K.

  7. Eye on CT Football says:

As far as the First Team All-State selections went, I have one big gripe. After watching the Ansonia v Montville game, there is no way I could select Tyler Girard-Flloyd at RB. What little talk I had heard about Girar-Floyd centered around him being big and athletic, but very soft. Well, any player who takes themselves out of the game just for offense and not for defense, is not an All-State RB. He hard one carry vs Ansonia and never ran with the ball again. However, he managed to play DE the entire game. The kid was fluff and overrated. It makes you wonder what was being takin into account by coaches when they selected him.

  8. Fred says:

How does the class s championship team only have one player making all state for class s… i thought they were loaded. what about mulligan, kramer, chinova. Docarmo missed two extra points this year and they were both blocked… three for three on field goals with a long of 35 yards. This kid was definitley the best in class s

  9. Dr. Von Nostran says:

When voting for the teams by class do coaches only vote within their own class?

  10. holycowman says:

    wow! montville 4 players, hyde 3, weston 3 state runner up-ansonia 1
    state champ sj 2??

  11. Everybody’s complaining. Must be Festivus.

  12. big guy says:

The St Joe’s RB is all State at RB ???????????

Give it to Gaines from Trumbull if you want to vote that way.

Why don’t we just look at what they did in 6th grade.

  13. @big guy & everyone — Matakevich played eight games, so he’s more than eligible.

@everybody — I wouldn’t pay attention to the positions so much. Sometimes players are listed in certain spots to make room for other deserving candidates. You’ll see that (Somewhat) in the NHR all-state and our all-area.

Also: Some of this also depends on who coaches nominate from their team.

No worries, I’m sure you’ll see some local kids missing get recognition on our team and others.

  14. BHS FAN says:

Excellent point, SPB. Deserving players at one position are often placed in their secondary position for a number of reasons, including an abundance of qualified players at the primary position or to get a desrving one-way (or mostly one-way player on a team in his position.

  15. ansonia fan says:

The fact that there was only one player from Ansonia does not bother me at all. He was the only Charger worthy of that status. It just points out how valuable Dobbs was to the success of the Ansonia (11-2) program this year. The fact that they lose one starter from this year’s team speaks volumes for the future of the Chargers. Arkeel Newsome, remember that name. Before he graduates he will break all the state records for running backs. He ran for over 800 yards and 15 touchdowns as a freshman. The fact that 6 players out of the 28 selected for the All-State team were from the NVL is indicative of the caliber of the athletes that play in the league.

  16. St. Paul says:

For class s, Devin Zeller should have been the all-state punter. He is averaging 40 yards a punt. Who is Corey Edsall?

  17. @St. Paul — Edsall. Football. Connecticut. …Ring a bell?

  18. BillyH says:

In the LL Division Conard was not even in that division WTH

  19. @BillyH — Conard? Sure it was. Who’d Trumbull beat in the Class LL Quarterfinals?

  20. BillyH says:

    POOLITICAL

  21. BillyH says:

Matter of fact niether was Hartford Public in the LL division.

  22. BillyH says:

Oh crap thats right my bad

  23. Spartans97 says:

SPB – you did another great year of covering high school football in Connecticut.

  24. Reggie sparks says:

Macintosh at RB over Jacobs? Nice runner in Shabashe but Jacobs was Staples offense.

  25. saint paul says:

@sean patrick bowley, That is exactly why he got the award because of his daddy. He has no stats.

  26. ray brown says:

one note on montrell dobbs—-i might be wrong—but i believe for all his work and carries ,his most remarkable stat was zero fumbles.pequot you sound like a passionate guy but give us a break with that rag league —please.its scary to think how good coggins will be next year, whereever he plays.transfer rumors are hot in the nvl with him going to ansonia or masuk.unreal.

  27. is casey cochran’ committed to boston college? if so boston college qb’ depth chart is deep with young talent. and just signed a recruit out of st. louis, MO. 6 3′ 3 star qb CHRISTIAN SUNTRUP who is highly touted. Does dad JACK’ let his son casey compete, or decommit? UCONN will be great for him!

  28. C'mon Man! says:

Matakevich? The kid didnt play in five games!!!!! Last year one of the best in the state but he got hurt this year. Not even best RB on team this year.Got the ball on goal line when he returned so scored alot. Hunt was the lead RB for St. Joes. I am sure he is a good kid(Matakevich) but that is a Joke!!

  29. Matakevich played in 8 games.

  30. C'mon Man! says:

Not questioning if Matakevich played at all,has talent or is a good kid. Questioning how did he make all-state after missing five games and had an off year. A kid who had a monster year deserved to be on the team. Matakevich did not have an all-state year on the field but somebody has decided otherwise.

    Dobbs: 3445 Rushing yards

    DeLorenzo: 1397 Rushing Yards

    Girard-Floyd: 1575 Rushing Yards

    Matakevich: 508 Rushing Yards
    *********************************
    Hunt(St. Joes): 998 Rushing Yards

    Marcus(Masuk): 1535 Rushing Yards

  31. CT Football Fan says:

SPB — great job with the CT Post All Star team…a very fair representation considering all of the individual talent in your coverage area…thanks for your coverage this season…

  32. GlastonburyHills says:

If you watched Matakevich in the Championship Game, you’d know why he was All-State.

  33. Joe says:

Brendan Lytton. Torrington RB 2,345. 10th best single season rushing in state history

  34. Fred says:

Ray brown… Dobbs fumbled in the state championship

  35. Remmy says:

ray brown, Dobbs definitely had a fumble. He fumbled in the red zone against Seymour. But when Ansonia got the ball back, Dobbs took it to the house on the first play from about 50 yards.

  36. thats amazing, dobbs 1 or 2 fumbles on that many carries per game.. states best running back this year bye far. st. joes rb/ is a good back as well! he’s a big physical bruising back. all-stater no ??

  37. Dan says:

I truly dont understand how these teams are decided. it seems like there is almost no reasoning behind their picks. I had heard rumors about this Punter from New Fairfield, who apparently is attracting some decent college attention and I stopped by to check him out when the Lancers played New Fairfield at Sacred Heart. The kid boomed the ball, and hit his kickoffs into and through the endzone. I saw he didnt make the all-state team, and checked out his stats on maxpreps. apparently he led the state in punting yards, had the longest punt in the state, and had the 9th highest average yards per punt in the nation. How does a kid like that manage to not make the all state team?

  38. JB says:

I guess they needed to give Matakevich an All-State honor and choose the 4th RB slot. He is probably better at LB. Dobbs is the State’s best RB and maybe all-around best football player … he played nearly every down on defense and special teams making huge plays there as well. Showed great heart. What are his options for college ?

  39. Ctrecruiter says:

D’Onofrio Avon Connecticut, was very impressive. Watched Avon vs Hyde game, demostrated division 1 talent.

  40. power run says:

Outside of Dobbs, there was no one even close to Lytton in rushing yards. Matekevich, should have been a LB, great overall player, but clearly a better defensive player. How a RB that had the year Lytton did is kept off the team is beyond me. Don’t want to hear about any lack of competition, because he rushed for his yards against the same teams as Dobbs. If 2,353 and 29td in 10 games doesn’t make you Register All-State, what does? Apparently being a lot of hype and scoring on TD runs of 10-6 yards does. Look at the numbers!!!

  41. impressed one says:

power run– you are asking a question that indeed has an answer. The state media was aware of DeLorenzo and Girard-Floyd from day 1 of 2010 season. Lytton on the other hand, had zero media hype and certainly suffered because of that. I had an oppurtunity to see all of the above mentioned backs player. Dobbs was to me the best, I saw him in the state title game and on Thanksgiving.

After Girard-Floyd and DeLorenzo play I can say niether blew me away. However, following Lytton’s record breaking 9 td performance I decided to go watch Torrington play their next gamer a thursday nigerht vs sacred heart in waterbury. After watching the game I can say this, despite the fact Torrington lost, I didn’t see a back as fast as Lytton all year. Three or four times he left some good athletes in his dust. He will be the best RB in Connecticut next year and was the 2nd best in 2010.

  42. What!!! says:

Has Dobbs passed the NCAA clearinghouse? If not I figure he goes to a prep school

  43. Ap says:

Dobbs definitely showed he can play on the next level! Watch out for Dobbs i’n a year or two. Prep’ school is the talk for him to increase his academics! Then on to College. Heard CCSU’ UNH’ now. But a year of Prep’ can bring on some D1a programs like Syracuse, Temple, Buffalo.

  44. Ap says:

New news, Dobbs is heading to Milford Academy Prep. And D1 schools are awaiting he gets cleared to be a qualifying NCAA athlete. Dobbs has the 2011 prep season to build up body strength, plus get his g.p.a. Scores up. Milford Prep is very popular with college recruiters, and placing ineligible high school football stars. Milford Academy sent Star AHS’ Ken Tinney’ to Michigan State. NYC jets Shon Green to Iowa. Philadelphia eagles Leshon McCoy to PITT’ and 2010′ placed 22 guys D1a programs. Dobbs will be a TOP 50 prep National player. This is not finalized, only projected!

  45. No idea says:

#1 3445 yards against the worst comp in the state and 400 carries…………………..#2 I’m NDWH grad and Sean Goldrich was dreadful this year………….that’s another case of my cousin Tommy the cooch pulling strings to all the dummy’s that buy into his garbage………….get a clue people

  46. another fan says:

#45 has “No idea” what he is talking about just like his name says.

  47. another fan says:

Congrat’s to Kenny Tinney at quarterback for an undefeated season with the semi-pro Panthers!!!!

  48. Eye on CT Football says:

no idea, than St. Joseph’s must have been an awful football team. I mean, they gave up 300 yards rushing to Dobbs just like NVL teams. If the FCIAC was so much better than the NVL then how come New Canaan struggled with Naugatuck in the quaterfinals and Ansonia was able to battle SJ’s tooth and nail. Trust me, Dobbs would have had even more rushing yards if he had to play the likes of Westhill, Bassick, Harding, Ludlowe, Trinity Catcholic, Norwalk, and Greenwich.

Keep in mind that Dobbs rushed for 1,000 yards in the post season. He also comes from a run first league in the NVL. Not that there is anything wrong with throwing the ball 40-50 times, but teams in the FCIAC don’t appear to do that. Dobbs would have been able to run the ball on everyone in the FCIAC this year. Naugatuck, which shut down Dobbs on Thanksgiving, played with 7-9 guys in the box all year depending on your formation. Even doing so against NC’s vaunted spread that only mustered 21 pts vs the Hounds. The NVL may not be as good as the 20 team FCIAC, but it could certainly compete. Trust me, teams like Ridgefield, McMahon, Greenwich, and Darien would have lost two or three games in the NVL.

  49. Open your Eyes says:

Eye on CT – By the way, no idea says he is a ND guy, but since you make it an FCIAC discussion – out of curiousity, can you name the NVL teams that would have beat Greenwich or Darien?

If Ansonia didn’t run the ball 50+ times to kill a little clock SJ would have put up 75 points on them without breaking a sweat.

Gotta love the fact that we are in January and the NVL guys are still talking about NC “struggling with Naugy”, and Ansonia “hanging with” SJ. Come back next year and try to win a game before you talk.

  50. PUUUT!!! says:

CT Football… 1-The impressive part on Dobbs is not the 300 yards but the 53 rushes. 2-The class s game wasn’t really close because SJ had total control of the game and the score ended up being 49-28(drubbing). and 3- Greenwich and Darien along with many teams in the FCIAC all go undefeated in NVL with teams like Trinity, Wilton and Ridgefield having 2-3 losses. NVL is not good, infact it is terrible.

  51. Bayouflower says:

I’m putting together a scrap book for my son. What edition of the CT Post was this in?? I’d like to order a copy.

  52. The all-state football teams? I don’t think they ran in CT Post, to be honest. Just here.

  53. another fan says:

Pound for pound NVL can compete with any league in the state.Do other leagues put their pads on differently?Practice harder ? More knowledge of the game? talent, experience, coaching? No. Blue chip players are rare but can pop up anywhere, and yes even in the NVL.You (NVL haters) salivate every time the NVL has a down year.So wipe your chin and grow up.Remember a couple years ago #1 Ansonia and #3 Holy Cross, Cross beat a good Stratford team 40 -0 in the final, and if you’re too youg to remember look up what Ansonia did in it’s final. Then look up 2002,3 , 1994,5, 1989,etc.etc.you get my drift.Seymour, Naugy ,Ansonia,Holy Cross have great historical pasts with excellent programs and could easily compete anywhere in the state.

  54. Charles Banks says:

I got to check out a couple of Enfield High School’s games this year and they were really solid. Buanno and VanOudenhove were both deserving of this recognition. They would run behind VanOudenhove 90% of the time and he paved the way for most of Buanno’s 26 TD’s. This two athletes were impressive to me when I would cover their games.

  55. Charlies Banks says:

I covered Enfield High School games and they always impressed me. Buanno and VanOudenhove deserve this type of recognition. VanOudenhove was able to pave the way for Buanno’s lightning speed and quickness. This produced 26 TD’s and a running offense to be feared. Buanno went behind VanOudenhove 90% of the time and it led this team to a memorable season.

  56. another fan says:

@ #50 NVL is just as good as anyone pound for pound ,forgot about 2006 already did we? Down year that’s all don’t worry.

  57. Ap says:

Hey Mark Whipple is i’n at UCONN’. He’s a CT. Guy i’n was the offensive cord. At Miami. Would be nice to see Jack Cochran son Masuks Casey Cochran at the helm for the Huskies for 2012. Cochran will be an instant impact for the UCONN football program!!! Sounds great, the new Dan Orvolski of CTs Quarterbacks!!

  58. Ap says:

To you guys talking of Dobbs remarkable year! Stop it he did his job, and was assigned to do a job and did it to the best of his ability! St. Joes was a fantastic skilled TEAM at many positions. They had 2 of everything, 2 good wide-outs, 2 good backs, and a mobile qb’ that had an arm and a set of feet on him! No excuse for u’s Ansonia fans, we were beat by a well put together football squad! Worry about Arkeel Newsome’ the record books might not have room for this kid!!
