Tyler Matakevich, a two-time all-state and all-Connecticut Post linebacker at St. Joseph, confirmed today he will be headed for prep school at Milford Academy.

Matakevich posted and later confirmed the news on his Facebook page earlier this evening.

Matakevich, a 6-foot-1, 205-pound native of Stratford, was a three-year starter and led St. Joseph to back-to-back state championships in his junior and senior seasons.

Despite missing the first five games of 2010, he ran for 508 yards and 11 touchdowns and caught 20 passes for 301 yards and five touchdowns in eight games as St. Joseph won the Class S championship over Ansonia. He scored 17 touchdowns total his senior year, including four in the Class S title game.

He will join Ansonia RB Montrell Dobbs, Connecticut Post’s 2010 MVP, and Montville all-state linebacker Tyler Girard-Floyd at the prep school in New Berlin, New York.

Masengo Kabongo signs with Stony Brook

Masengo Kabongo

From the ‘How’d I miss this?’ department, some interesting news came out of Long Island earlier this week. We finally learned the destination of Fairfield Prep’s 2007 all-state lineman Masengo Kabongo.

After an unsuccessful stint at Maryland, Kabongo has landed at Division I-AA Stony Brook. The school announced Kabongo’s signing on its website during National Signing Day.

It’s a decidedly strange turn (not to mention a minor coup for Stony Brook) for the 6-2, 285-pound defensive tackle, who was highly-regarded coming out of high school.

Kabongo was high on Division I-A college lists as far back as his sophomore season at Fairfield Prep. By his senior season, during which he compiled 47 tackles, including 11 for a loss, and 5.5 sacks and was an All-Connecticut Post defensive lineman, Kabongo was listed as a top-50 defensive recruit. Scouts, Inc. listed him as the 15th best defensive tackle, Scout.com listed him as 33rd-best in the country, Rivals.com named him the 24th best.

But, after a redshirt year at Maryland in 2008, he played sparingly in two years. He played in six games in 2009, but just once over the team’s final seven games of the season.

By 2010, he had fallen far down the depth chart. Asked about Kabongo’s progress in August, former coach Ralph Friedgen told Patrick Stevens of D1scourse.com, “So-so. He has to be more consistent and more dependable in all areas of his life.”

Kabongo officially left school shortly before the start of the season.

“Real excited about landing him at the end of this process,” Stony Brook coach Chuck Priore said in the school’s official signing day video. “His ability to be an immediate impact player in our program will help.”
