Spring Football 2011: Who is and who isn’t?

by:

The 2011 Connecticut spring football season is drawing closer and, since we plan on checking in with a few of our local teams, here’s a list of who will and who won’t be participating this year.

The teams on the left are conducting spring practice this season, meaning between the Friday before Memorial Day and the end of the school year, teams can hold 10 days of spring practices (three must be conducted without pads).

The teams on the right are not holding spring practice, meaning they will be allowed to start fall practice four days before the traditional start (which is typically the third Monday in August.)

Schools may choose one or the other.

Anyway, here’s the list, which can be found on the CIAC football page.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but it appears to me that the teams that won a state title last year all participate in spring football. I would like to know who has won a state title and DID NOT practice in the spring???

  2. You would be correct.

And I don’t know. Nor do I know if there’s a significant correlation.

I tend to think there is a correlation. It’s obvious that the powerhouses use spring practice. Besides an extra six days of practice, it also gives the team more togetherness, camaraderie, and a feel of 24/7/365 football which in this day and age, you need to succeed anywhere in this country.

It’s a great thing. New York has scrimmage camps in June and August before practice starts, but official “spring football” is definitely the way to go.

We can’t compare anything to Texas, but they do the same thing (except its 17 days of spring football vs a week of fall practice) and they culminate the spring football with an intrasquad scrimmage that gets 1000s of people to attend as if they were the SEC.

I think its great, but I’m also a football nut.

Interesting. This is only the second or third year of having a choice.

My guess would be it is a numbers based decision more often than not.

St. Joe’s won the S title, but had more kids on their squad than Derby does in the entire high school. Exaggeration yes, but not far from the truth!

Also traditional powers stick with tradition.

st joes didnt have springs last year

    Correlation not 100%.

In 2009, Notre Dame-WH and St. Joes did not do spring practice and won state titles.

In 2010, St. Joes did not do spring practive and won a state title.

  7. OK. Right. Mistaken. I was looking at this year’s list, Fred

st.joes will need springs this year.

  9. Guys, please look at the whole picture. Most of the teams that are doing spring football have a full roster of players. They can afford to have a couple of kids not show up (or miss for lax, baseball, track) and still have practice. Take a look at the roster sizes on the teams that dont. Some of the schools that have a number issue cant afford to lose kids or run them away with spring football. i was at a small school and you somedays didnt have enough to have a full practice. thats is very taxing on the staff and the players.
Coaches get very little pay as it is and most schools dont give money for the spring. i know no one is in it for the money, but to recieve something for the month you work for the spring would nice.
also look to see if some of the teams not doing spring have coaches that are coaching spring sports.
You cant say a blanket statement like “if you do spring you win and if you dont you dont.” there are many things the head coaches that go into the head coach making his choice.

    It’s almost here!!!
