Ansonia RB Montrell Dobbs accepts scholarship offer from UConn

Ansonia running back Montrell Dobbs, the fifth all-time leading rusher in state history, has accepted a scholarship offer to play football at UConn.

Dobbs picked up the offer from UConn coach Paul Pasqualoni during his first (ever) visit to Storrs with Milford Academy coach Bill Chaplick on Wednesday.

After returning home to Ansonia, Dobbs didn’t wait long to give Pasqualoni his final decision.

“It didn’t take much,” said Dobbs, who has made no secret of his desire to play for the Huskies since his breakout, all-state senior year at Ansonia. “I pretty much ate breakfast on it.”

Dobbs called Pasqualoni around noontime on Thursday to say “yes.”

“It means everything to me,” said Dobbs, who ran for 3,445 yards and 40 touchdowns and led the Chargers to the Class S championship game. “I’m a Connecticut guy and to be playing for the best team in your state is an honor.

“It’s a huge weight off my shoulders. I got my first offer and it was from school that I wanted it to be. It took awhile before they came around. But it’s meant a lot. …Coach Pasqualoni said they were expecting big things out of me.”

Dobbs will be a member of UConn’s 2012 recruiting class. He is still required to attend Milford Academy this fall. He will sign a Letter of Intent in February, but will enroll as a UConn in January to participate in spring practice next year.

“This is the beginning of my new life,” Dobbs said. “This is just the tip of the iceberg.”

Dobbs, the second all-time leading rusher in Connecticut history behind former teammate Alex Thomas (now at Yale) and the 2010 Connecticut Post football MVP, said he spoke to Pasqualoni one-on-one during his visit to Storrs.

“Coach Pasqualoni is a straight-up guy, he doesn’t want people who he doesn’t think will contribute or truly loves football. We pretty much saw eye-to-eye on that,” Dobbs said. “Football is my life. I’d like to make a living out of it. I learned, from my senior year, that you have to work to be the best. Now I need to work even harder.”

Pasqualoni impressed Dobbs with his history of recruiting and developing Connecticut’s top football players while head coach at Syracuse in in the 1990s and early 2000s. New Britain’s Tebucky Jones, Bloomfield’s Dwight Freeney, Cheshire’s Kyle and Ian McIntosh, Greenwich OL Scott Kiernan all started for Pasqualoni at Syracuse.

“He was telling me back in the day, Syracuse was the place to go for Connecticut guys,” Dobbs said. “Now he wants to change that. He wants to make sure the best players in Connecticut play for UConn.”

Dobbs said he though his signing would open doors for all other Connecticut high school football players to come after him, especially his younger brothers. He’s the second oldest of seven boys.

“I see this as me setting the example for them,” Dobbs said.

Correction: Dobbs was incorrectly listed as the state’s second all-time leading rusher. He is listed fifth all-time.

BirdsEye Sports’ Governor’s Cup football highlight reel

Looking for Governor’s Cup highlights?

We know you are.

Well, here comes BirdsEye Sports to the rescue.

While cutting together the official broadcast, which will be shown on Cox Sports TV on Saturday and Sunday, Ben Talbott, the Czar of Connecticut Sports Video, threw together this quick highlight reel of the action from Connecticut’s 37-6 victory over Rhode Island.

Don’t forget to check out the entire game on Cox Sports TV (if you get Cox Cable, which is just 13 towns in Connecticut and all of Rhode Island), and Ben says the official DVD will be available for purchase next week on his site.

Anyway, here’s the highlight reel, including Nainy Bah‘s 59-yard touchdown catch, Montrell Dobbs’ electric 77-yard touchdown run on the second play of the third quarter, and Max DeLoRenzo’s 15-yard touchdown run.

Not included are Brookfield back Brian Kelly‘s touchdowns later in the game.

Nutmeg domination again in the Governor’s Cup football game

I think we can sum up this game in one photo:

Any questions?

OK, If you must know any more read our man Mike Cardillo’s recap of the game, the ninth straight victory for Connecticut over Rhode Island.

Or if more photos are your thing, check out our massive slideshow. See if you can spot your favorite player.

Guys who did lots of things for Connecticut, especially in the second half, Connecticut Post MVP Montrell Dobbs (TD run) and fellow Post all-stars Brian Kelly (two TD catches), Joe Della Vecchia (two TD passes) and Willie Maxen. Other guys doing things: Morgan’s Nainy Bah (TD catch), Woodland’s Jack DeBiase (INT), St. Joseph’s Tyler Matakevich (sack), Stratford’s Markey Desruisseaux, Shelton’s Mike Georgalas and Stamford’s Mark Robinson. There were others, UConn recruit Max DeLorenzo (TD run) of Berlin, Wethersfield’s Chris Lesure (sack), Bristol Eastern’s Tyrell Holmes, New London’s Carlos Lozada (fumble recovery), Branford’s Kyle Nolan (TD pass), Conard’s Jonathan Esposito (Princeton recruit), Southington’s Tyler Dube, and the team Connecticut offensive line which was ordered by coach John Murphy to start knocking Rhode Island players over for Dobbs and Co. in the second half.

They did.

The rest was history.

This picture's worth three touchdowns: Brookfield's Brian Kelly (2) and Montrell Dobbs (1) pose for a photo late in the second half of the 13th Governor's Cup. Photo by Sean Patrick Bowley

Play of the day: Montrell Dobb’s electric 77-yard touchdown run on the second play of the second half. It was vintage Dobbs. A juke, another juke, another juke…

Then blast-off. 17-6 Connecticut. And it was pretty much game over.

Second place goes to Temple recruit Bah’s 59-yard touchdown catch-and-run. Took a short pass from Della Vecchia, cut across the field and raced down the opposite sideline for Connecticut’s go-ahead score in the second quarter.

Hit of the day: Willie Maxen’s smack of a Rhode Island player on the kickoff following Bah’s TD.

Valiant in defeat: Doesn’t say a heckuva lot when your kicker’s the star of your team, but Rhode Island’s Chad Bacon shined pretty brightly. He kicked two field goals (as it turned out, Rhode Island’s only points). But the beaut was at the end of the first half. A 49-yarder. Yes he had the wind at his back, but still… Tremendous kick. Had the uninitiated among us wondering how many times we’ve seen high school players kick that far.

Not many.

Quote of the day: “I didn’t see that one coming I usually outsmart them. In our three state championships I had the water dumped out before they could do it.” - John Murphy on getting a victory ice bath from Dobbs and Matakevich.

Tweet of the day: @CurrenSCC on Twitter suggesting Rhode Island could use some reinforcements:

Can we suggest New Hampshire, too?

Photo of the day: The one below, a snapshot of Dobbs on his 77-yard touchdown run. Some lucky college is going to love this kid once he gets through Milford Academy. This was a thing of beauty.

Saturday Links: Governor’s Cup today; Bassick’s fight; Ansonia says goodbye

by:

Busy news day for sports, what with the Travelers Championship (led by an amateur after two rounds), the United States-Mexico Copa Oro final, the usual rounds of baseball going down this afternoon.

And, yes, there’s plenty of high school football news.

The Governor’s Cup is being played at Southington High School at 4:30 p.m. Masuk coach John Murphy leads Connecticut’s talented class into another round with Rhode Island. Our nutmeg boys are hoping to make a seven-game win streak into eight.

Of particular interest will be the performance of Connecticut Post 2010 football MVP Montrell Dobbs of Ansonia and two-time football all-star and 20010 Connecticut Post Athlete of the Year, Tyler Matakevich.

The last time these two stepped on a football field together, they were facing off in the Class S championship game. They’ll be teammates from now into the fall when they head up to Milford Academy.

Writer Mike Cardillo chronicled the pair’s friendship heading into the Governor’s Cup.

Here’s the Governor’s Cup info and Connecticut roster.

We’ll be sending updates on Twitter throughout the game. Either follow our football account @CTHSFootball or just check the Twitter window on the right of the page to see what’s happening.

Bassick senior Brandon Williams (left, at center) talks to his football teammates during a gathering at Went Field Friday, June 24, 2011 in Bridgeport to support former coach Frank Marcucio. Marcucio was fired Wednesday after two seasons as head coach.

Elsewhere, Bridgeport has explained its firing of Bassick coach Frank Marcucio after two seasons. But his former players won’t going to let the dismissal slide without having their voices heard.

All-State lineman Brandon Williams gathered 15  teammates and a couple alumni together Friday afternoon at Went Field in Bridgeport to game plan a fight for their coach’s job.

The gathering started off slow, but once the Bassick players arrived Williams had their rapt attention. They plan to harass the Bridgeport athletic department and board of education with phone calls and emails. “Don’t be afraid,” Williams announced in a fabulous display of leadership that’s made him a two-year captain. “What are they gonna do to you?

“Just make sure you use common sense. Don’t call up and say, ‘Yo. I want my coach back.’ Because that’s not going to help. Write down what you’re going to say before you call.”

Bridgeport and Marcucio have remained mum on this issue, but this episode doesn’t seem as if it’ll pass quietly.

And, finally, the Ansonia community said goodbye to former all-star Darnell Cooks, who was killed in a still-unexplained car crash last Sunday morning. Family and friends packed the Greater Evangel Temple Church of God in Christ on Jackson Street to pay their respects.

Cooks was in a car that collided with another in Bridgeport at 1 a.m. Sunday, injuring four others. He is the third player killed from the 2002 state championship team, following Damontis Johnson, who was shot and killed Thanksgiving Eve 2002, and fellow 2004 captain Steve Zuraw, who died shortly after in a car accident in 2009.

Let’s hope he’s the last.

The coach, who has been a coach at the school for four years, including two as the head football coach, reported his dismissal on his Facebook page with a post that read: “Four years of hard work — how sad.”

His post was followed by pledge from one of his players to fight for him.

“Coach we goin to get u back dnt worry,” wrote soon-to-be junior lineman Luis Acosta, who also declared an “emergency meeting” for the football team scheduled for Friday.

Contacted by the Connecticut Post, Marcuico confirmed he was fired Wednesday afternoon. He would not comment further, referring all inquiries to the Bridgeport athletic department or the teachers’ union.

The Bridgeport public school system has yet to release an announcement. Citywide athletic director James Denton didn’t returned a phone call seeking comment Wednesday evening.

Bassick athletic director Craig Bruno, who is also the head coach at Bunnell High School, said, “I have no confirmation either way.”

Marcucio was an assistant under former coach Dennis Wanzie for two seasons before taking over in 2009.

He won three games at Bassick, a 34-7 victory over McMahon and 18-12 victory over Harding in 2009 and a 28-12 victory over Bullard-Havens last season. Overall, the Lions were 3-17 under Marcucio.

Darnell Cooks, a star player on Ansonia’s back-to-back state championship seasons of 2002 and 2003, died Sunday in a car accident in Bridgeport. He was 25.

Cooks served as team captain on the 2004 team and graduated from Ansonia in 2005.

Updated: Funeral arrangements, via Jenkins King and Malerba Funeral Home, have been announced. Calling hours are Friday between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. at the The Evangel Temple C.O.G.I.C. of Ansonia. The funeral will begin at 10 a.m. followed by a burial at the Pine Grove Cemetery.

Cooks was a three-year starter from 2002-2004. He played quarterback and defensive back as a senior captain in 2004. He threw for close to 400 yards and 9 touchdowns and also ran for 500 yards and four touchdowns, according to stats left on MaxPreps. Cooks also made 33 tackles and had an interception and three fumble recoveries. Ansonia finished 8-3. Cooks scored two touchdowns in a 27-19 Class S semifinal loss to Cromwell.

“He’ll always be remembered as good player for us, he made a lot of plays over the years even though he might have been overshadowed a bit by Kenny Tinney and some of the others,” said Ansonia football coach Tom Brockett, who was the offensive coordinator on Cooks’ teams.

“But most important, he was a kid everybody liked. He had different way about him. There really was only one Darnell. He was a real likeable kid, a good hearted kid that everybody loved being around. He’ll always be remembered. He’ll always be loved.”

This is the third player from the 2002 Class S championship team to have died. Damontis Johnson was shot and killed the day before Thanksgiving 2002.

Steve Zuraw, Cooks’ co-captain in 2004, died in a car accident in 2009.

“It’s a sad thing,” Brockett said. “These kids are dying way too young.”

Spring Links: Pomperaug’s new football coach and (some) scrimmage updates

by:

It’s been a relatively busy week in offseason high school football.

First, the 10th Governor’s Cup between Rhode Island and Connecticut all-star teams, kicks off Saturday night at Southington’s Fontana Field. The Hall of Fame Classic comes two weeks after. Pomperaug elevated Dave Roach to head football coach. And a bunch of teams culminated spring practice with their annual (color)-(color) scrimmages. Also, we know the 2011 playoff divisions.

Here’s a run-down of the stories published locally over the last week or so.

Pomperaug names Roach new head football coach

This caught no one by surprise. From the moment we heard coach Chuck Drury might be stepping down to join his son Michael at Southington, Roach’s name was the first from everybody’s lips. He’s a teacher, he’s an alum, he was a no-brainer for a school trying to suppress transitional chaos stemming from the first significant regime change in 35 years.

That doesn’t mean there won’t be major changes in Southbury. Philosophical, organizational and tactical tweaks aside, there have been rampant whispers that other coaches from Pomperaug’s staff will be jumping ship shortly. Like we’ve said, what looked like a bona fide contender could be indistinguishable from 2010.

Ansonia moves up to Class M and other (less significant) CIAC football division shuffling

The official packet hasn’t been released, but the 2011 CIAC playoff classes are set. This was a separate post from late last week, but worth mentioning again in case you missed it. Check your team’s CIAC playoff division.

We have updated this slightly since the original post. Derby’s placement dropped from Class M to Class S over the weekend, presumably its loss of the O’Brien Tech enrollment hadn’t been counted.

Spring Game Updates

The Stamford Advocate, Greenwich Time and Danbury News-Times published a variety of spring reports from their immediate coverage areas last week.

All-Star Season

As mentioned, the Governor’s Cup all-star game between Connecticut and Rhode Island kicks off Saturday, June 25 at 4:30. The game is being held at Southington’s Fontana Field due to field renovations at the game’s traditional spot at Rentschler Field. Tickets are $8.

The all-star committees from Rhode Island and Connecticut, along with the YouthFootball Coaches Association will be holding a free youth football clinic at 1 p.m. before the game. Registration is at noon.

To purchase tickets contact John Fontana, P.O. Box 632, Southington, CT 06489 or call 860-628-4122, fax 860-628-7652 or e-mail: jfontana01@snet.net. For additional information go to www.cthssports.com.

Here is the Connecticut roster for the Governor’s Cup

Two weeks later is the New Haven-Fairfield County Hall of Fame Classic at West Haven’s Ken Strong Stadium.

The rosters for the Hall of Fame Football Classic are listed here. Game time is Friday, July 8, 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $7. Visit www.newhavenfootballfoundation.com for more information.

From upstate:

An absolutely wonderful Father’s Day column from Jeff Jacobs of the Hartford Courant on the subject of Fermi football coach Bill Beeler: Shooting Makes Fermi Coach, Manchester Officer Beler Appreicate Father’s Day More.

Beeler, if you recall, was shot in the shoulder during a hostage standoff in Manchester a month ago. He’s recovering with spirits flying. Great to hear. Great read.

Notebook

Notre Dame-Fairfield released some news on a pair of their athletes, Nigel Beckford and Theo Tumba, earning MVP honors in their respective classes at the National Underclassman Scouting Combine in Hartford. Click here for more details.

Add: League changes

A quick glance at the Connecticut football leagues shows that the CCC has realigned its monstrous conference again into more of an SCC model. The league goes one further than the SCC, with three divisions split into east and west. Division I has 10 teams (5 each); Division II has 12 teams (6 each) and Division III has 10 teams (5 each).

No other changes are listed (yet).

Camp Listing

From July 15-17, Jack Cochran’s ‘The Program’ football camps will be hosting a several summer clinics. The Friday Night Lights QB-WR Academy; the Dwight Freeney D-Line, pass rush academy; the Andrew Pinnock running back adcademy and the All-American linebacker academy. Hoo boy! Ansonia jumps to Class M and other (less significant) 2011 playoff division shuffling

by:

The Ansonia football team races onto the field during the 2010 season. The Chargers will be competing in Class M this season -- its highest playoff division in 31 years.

They haven’t been officially posted by the CIAC, but anyone with a brain can discover the 2011 high school football playoff divisional layout.

Just not me, apparently. On Friday, one of our loyal posters mentioned he noticed that perennial small-school contender Ansonia had been bumped to Class M this season. Thinking CIAC had released the new numbers today, I leaped to my computer to check them out. Of course, nothing was doing.

That is, until I looked at the composite schedules posted last week. Sure enough, they were all laid out differently than the year before. After cross-checking with last year’s divisions, and confirming the new teams (like O’Brien Tech) were indeed on the schedule, I can say that — yes — the 2011 divisions are done.

We still await the 2011 packet with the official numbers. They should be out soon. But we can now take a look at who’s competing with who for the four state championships this season.

First, the composite schedules: CLASS LL | CLASS L | CLASS M | CLASS S

Quick Synopsis

Clearly, the biggest change is Ansonia, which moves from its traditional home of Class S to Class M. Though there might have been a few times Ansonia might have competed in a higher division, it hasn’t competed in a playoff round higher than Class S since the 1994 Class SS championship vs. Bloomfield. Before that, Ansonia’s last playoff season in a larger division was in 1980′s Class LL.

Montville, which lost to Ansonia in the 2010 Class S semifinals and St. Joseph in the Class SS state championship game, has also moved up to Class M. With defending champion Hillhouse, Brookfield and Berlin still embedded in this division, Class M looks markedly tougher than it did a year ago, at least at the top.

As for Ansonia, it’s a change — but it doesn’t make their road to a championship any more or less hard. The four-division playoff format took care of that. Last year’s Class S field was pretty tough. This year’s M might not be of the same caliber, but it certainly looks harder than this year’s Class S.

With Ansonia and Montville out of the way, Class S looks weaker than in years past — especially with St. Joseph and Woodland suffering significant  graduation losses. The division’s only 2010 playoff team pickup is Plainville. Sacred Heart, Cromwell, Hyde and (maybe) Valley Regional/Old Lyme with Jimmy Fairfield-Sonn back, stick around.

Class LL and L actually gained playoff teams from a year ago.

Class LL will feature playoff qualifiers Xavier, Staples, Glastonbury, Trumbull, West Haven, NFA, etc., and then traditional heavyweights like Greenwich, Southington, New Britain, Shelton, Cheshire, Bridgeport Central, Ridgefield, etc. The division added Class L playoff qualifier Bristol Eastern and crosstown rival Bristol Central (which should provide some extra intrigue come Thanksgiving). But, for the most part, no earth-shattering changes.

Class L endured the most changes from 2010. But the usual suspects are all in attendance: Masuk, New Canaan, Darien, Hand, Bunnell, Notre Dame-West Haven, Fitch, East Lyme, Naguatuck. The class lost Bristol Eastern and Bristol Central, but added Class M playoff teams New London and Platt-Meriden, which probably gives it slightly more weight than a year ago.

*Updated: Derby had been included in the Class M division when this was first published, but was dropped into Class S over the weekend. Presumably now that the enrollment does not include O’Brien Tech.

Huzzah! CIAC publishes football schedules

by:

The CIAC has published the 2011 high school football schedules. (School by school)

Master varsity schedule.

These are, of course, subject to change between now and September.

But, for now, peruse and enjoy.

FOR STARTERS…

A quick look at the top matchups of opening week:

Wednesday, Sept. 14

Seymour plays at O’Brien Tech — O’Brien Tech kicks off its new program under former Newtown coach Ken Roberts.

Thursday, Sept. 15

Torrington at Ansonia — Interesting non-NVL NVL matchup. Post-Dobbs Ansonia (featuring Arkeel Newsome) vs. Torrington and back Brenden Lytton);

Friday, Sept. 16

Notre Dame-WH at Xavier – Rematch of last year’s thrilling opener. This time Xavier’s wearing the crown.

Ridgefield at Greenwich — Last time these two played: 2008, a 21-14 Ridgefield victory.

Pomperaug at Brookfield — The post-Drury Panthers might look very different than when we last saw them. Brookfield, with QB Boeing Brown and RB Leaon Gordon, is a front-runner to challenge Masuk.

Trumbull at Catholic Memorial (Mass.) — The large FCIAC schools draw the bye this year. Class LL runner-up Trumbull opens in Boston. These teams last played in 2007 and 2008. Split the series.

Notre Dame-Fairfield at New Fairfield – New coach Rico Brogna‘s first game at NDFF.

Saturday, Sept. 17

Staples at St. Joseph — Both crews will look different than when we last saw them. Haven’t played since 2004.

Masuk at Oxford — First game for the defending Class L champions. Last year’s battle ruffled a few feathers.

REGIONAL NON-CONFERENCE CLASHES

As we all know, nine teams from the FCIAC and SCC have built-in byes on their schedule. After two seasons, the FCIAC’s weekly bye has rotated back to largest schools. The SCC is still saddled with byes thanks to Derby’s evacuation two years ago. The NVL also gives its schools byes.

All nine of the SCC bye teams have filled their open dates, notably because the league doesn’t play a championship game. So, SCC teams are free to schedule the week before Thanksgiving. Four teams have taken advantage.

Most of the NVL teams have filled their dates. The latest was Ansonia-Torrington a few weeks ago. We’re told Ansonia was unsuccessful in its bid to to go outside the league and wound up scheduling Torrington in Week 1.

Only two bye teams remain. Sacred Heart in Week 3 and St. Paul on Thanksgiving Day (Rocky Hill bowed out).

Finally, FCIAC big schools haven’t lucky at all. Only four of nine bye teams have found opponents. Greenwich (Week 3), Staples (Week 4), Stamford (Week 6), Norwalk (Week 8), Harding (Week 9) have not filled their open dates yet. (Somebody check if Naples, Fla. is available).

With 14 teams, the SWC doesn’t have this problem.

So far, here is how the regional schools have filled their open dates.
