The (somewhat) definitive Connecticut Class of 2012 recruiting list

by:

Masuk quarterback Casey Cochran is widely considered the top recruit in Connecticut for the class of 2012.

With some fanfare, top college recruiting website Rivals.com unveiled its state-by-state recruit rankings a couple of weeks ago. So we here at Connecticut Football HQ thought it would be nice to take those and compile a comprehensive list of the state’s top recruits heading into the 2011 season.

This is purely a list based on website reports. None of it has come from actual reporting on our end. This list designed to give fans a comprehensive look at our state’s prospects in the eyes of the recruiting world. And what you see on those sites is what you’ll get here.

Also, this is just for the Class of 2012. So you won’t be seeing any reports on Brookfield QB Boeing Brown, or Sacred Heart WR David Coggins, etc.  or Masuk’s Shawn Flynn, etc. (Brain freeze on Flynn. He’s a part of this mix.)

We’ve added links to each players’ junior year profile page on MaxPreps.com.

If we could find them (and we usually did), we added recruiting videos below each profile.

Here are the actual Connecticut recruiting pages: Rivals.com | Scout.com

ESPN.com’s RECRUITING LIST

ESPN’s recruiting site is decidedly more liberal than any of the two big recruiting sites. Lots of names, little substance and somewhat inaccurate. Danbury’s Austin Calitro, for example, is listed as undeclared. Who knows how this list is compiled and curated.

Still, it adds a lot more names. So take these as just an expansive list of other prospects/good players who may or may not end up playing in college.

Again, by no means is this an all-encompassing list, just what the internet bots at ESPN have collated for our fair state.

Players in bold are not found on either Rivals.com or Scout.com rankings. We’ve thrown in a few recruiting video links for local players.

Update: We’re going to cheat a bit and add players we know are being recruited, but not on the ESPN recruiting site to this list. They’ll be given an asterisk. We’ll post info as necessary.  (I’ve changed this. See below.)

BRAND NEW!
THE RECRUITING WRITE-IN PAGE

OK, since everyone’s anxious to add their favorite player (or son ;) on the list, I’m creating the write-in section below. Players who did not appear on any of the big recruiting lists (as of July 21) will appear here. I’ve added a few of my one from the previous list.

59 Responses

  1. SWCfan95 says:

I think you are missing the following:

Leaon Gordon – Brookfield (He has to be a Top 1-5 RB this year)
    Tyler Puglisi, RB – Brookfield
    Joey AcQuanita, LB – Brookfield
    Ralph Schatz, WR/DE – Brookfield
    David DePoi, TE/DE/K – Brookfield
    Brandon Schmidt, QB/RB – Bethel
Valdir Nepomuceno, LB/RB – New Milford (may only be a Jr and small?)
There must be others from Pomperaug, Newtown, Bethel, and Fairfield Co.

  2. Read. Read. Read. This list is of players who appear on the major recruiting sites.

  3. Oh, and Leaon Gordon is on the ESPN list.

  4. John says:

When did I miss that Bookfield became the St. Thomas Aquinas-Ft. Lauderdale of the Northest? Calm down bro.

  5. SWCfan95 says:

SPB & John, you are correct, I guess I was thinking top seniors (2012) or better seniors and struggling for local talent, but I do think Leaon Gordon should be on the list, not sure why he has not done a better job of his recruiting and getting him onto the “major recruiting” sites as SPB pointed out and my error. how do kids get onto Rivals.com or Scout.com, do the coaches do it? Ok so scratch all that list but Gordon. We really don’t have a lot of 2012 kids that are D1 prospects in CT.

  6. Ted says:

Seems a shame to leave out one of the state’s premier programs. A bunch of the New Canaan boys have film online, and many of them have – at the very least – garnered DI-AA looks…

    Matt Milano, QB – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WrGk4SwwbZM

    Dylan Leeming, DE – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sc9QTDx5gWc

    Kevin McDonough, LB – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxr5XgjPyDk

    Thomas Rochlin, DL – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PaQPk-sCj04&
    feature=related

    Connor Kilbane, TE – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xT8whJFfPSU&feature=related

  7. You get on Scout and Rivals one of two ways:

Catch the eye of major college coaches or analysts at a recruiting camp. Catch the eye of major college coaches through film.

  8. Remember, while most are good high school football players a majority of these kids won’t end up anywhere significant enough for Scout or Rivals to care.

Kevin Macari, for example, was one of the top 5 HS football players in CT. He was a 2-star recruit (out of five) on Rivals — Hanratty was a three-star. They haven’t even listed where Macari wound up (Georgetown).

  9. Swc says:

myles gaines transfers from prep (st lukes) reclassifies as jr so now a part of 2013

  10. OK. So if anyone else knows of any transfers, let us know.

  11. thomas says:

Hey SPB great job with all you do for the local hs football however you forgot one stud of this year’s class, Torrington’s Brendan Lytton, kid was unreal last year.

  12. SWCfan95 says:

SPB speaking of transfers, did Croce transfer from Pomp/SWC to the Gunnery for this Fall? Clearly he will QB at the Gunnery then? Should’nt he be in this list or did he not have Rivals.com, etc listing?

  13. One more time, with feeling — *I* didn’t leave anybody out. This is an aggregate of Scout.com; Rivals.com; ESPN recruiting sites.

  14. @SWCfan05 — Yes. And he’ll repeat his Jr. year.

  15. The Dude says:

Like SPB said, while we may consider a lot of these players great, but in the big scheme of things on the next level it doesn’t translate. Nationally this year Connecticut is basically seen as Cochran and nobody else.

  16. @The Dude — Pretty much. Last year was a relatively good one with Stewart (Florida), Jordan (Florida), Hanratty (Notre Dame) dominating headlines early; Dobbs (UConn) dominating them late.

So far the only guy on the national radar is Cochran and, honestly, it looks more and more like he’ll end up somewhere relatively low profiled when it’s all over.

  17. PompFan04 says:

I did get word that Croce is definitely going to the Gunnery and repeating Jr year He supposedly has offers for football already from Bryant and URI,with one baseball offer from Pace University. He will be missed at Pomperaug, but like Coach always says tradition doesn’t graduate or leave. I’m sure we will be just fine.

  18. nvl fan says:

lytton from torrington is a name to watch. another name from the nvl to watch is dylan vano a 6’5″ 280lb. two-way starter for ansonia. if used right he is going to be a d-1 recruit.

  19. THE RULER says:

the wr from bunnell is a problem, watch his tape if you didnt.many of his highlights came against 1/2 teams though.

  20. Pat Mcgroin says:

SPB thanks for all you do, this is great! There are some must see games between these players as well.

  21. bigguy says:

SPB – Major recruiting sites are a joke. Most of them want the kids to pay $$$$ and/or go to camp for more $$$. It has become a big business that sometimes hurt’s a kid. What happened to the good old days when a college coach would go to a practice or god forbid went to a game. It’s all about money.

  22. I’ll disagree halfway.

Agreed recruiting sites are in it to make money (as am I); And, yes, many kids don’t get noticed unless they attend camps, which costs money. I stress “many” kids, not all. If you’re big/strong/good enough you will stick out.

As annoying as recruiting sites are, they’re pretty much on top of things when it comes to the higher profiled guys — especially rivals and scout. So their reports aren’t to be dismissed.

As for coaches, they aren’t basing their recruiting on the sites. It’s the other way around.

College coaches and their assistants do check out games (I bump into them all the time). That’s mostly to show a recruit a face. College coaching staffs mainly take long road trips in their designated areas, beating the bushes, visiting high school coaches and players privately to size up recruits and perhaps look for diamonds.

  23. Remmy says:

We’re a few years away but, soon-to-be Junior, WR David Coggins of Sacred Heart (Waterbury) was just offered by Boston College today. The first of many offers coming his way, for sure.

It’ll be interesting to see where Lytton (Torrington) ends up.

  24. MP2 says:

I think everyone is overlooking Number 79 from New Canaan Kalin Killinger He is the only 3rd year starter on the team. This Kid has not missed a practice around 7 years. He fought for a position his sophomore year against a senior and has started ever since. He wrestles in the off season and went into states #2 seat. I know this Kid well, Trains hard in the off season. Did not get caption in his senior year due to political reasons. (Team needed a team mom and he is benign raised by his father). You never hear of him because they won’t allow him to play defense. Played 6 plays on D last year. Two sacks, two tackles. Didn’t give One not One sack on his side last year. It’s time to give the Offence line its due

  25. MP2 says:

PS- Don’t take my word just ask any player who ever lined up against him. 6’4- 250lbs “it’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog”

  26. Smiles says:

@MP2 – I actually know the NC Football program well and the kids vote for their captains – and they have the results to prove it – so that’s absolutely false comment. And he is not very productive defensively, or hasn’t been in the past, so they don’t use him. However you may see him there from time to time this year, but he is not a good defensive player. And he gave up a sack against bassick in week 1. Aside from all of your false comments – best kid in the world, great offensive lineman, not good, great – was NC’s best last year, and that was with Hanratty – he is getting some looks from Sacred Heart, CCSU, and some other low level d1aa schools.

  27. Smiles says:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJS63rNIDrA

    Link to Kalin Killinger’s highlights

  28. CT-HS Football Fan says:

Is our state’s top recruit even legally eligible to play football this year? Rumor has it he’s at least 20, if not 21 already. Anyone know? Given his Dad’s reputation it would not surprise me if rules were being broken again.

  29. MP2 says:

OK….I stand corrected. So you’re telling me that the Captains are not chosen on there Performances rather on popularity? So it’s not a political thing it’s more of a popularity contest? I was not at the Bassick game so again I stand Corrected. I do know that allowing 1 sack in 14 games is a good record, worthy of being a captain. So as far as “All of my false statements” go, I do apologize. I’m just a good friend of his father and know the hurt and pain this kid went through. Look all of the kids that take the field on ALL teams work hard some kids work harder then others. If you truly think he was “NC best last year” what happen? Where are the Writings in the paper? I understand he was shadowed by others but again popularity right or wrong? What are we teaching these kids it better to be popular then work hard? The quarterback for Masuk is good as is Matt Milano but where would they be without the line. This year let’s look a little harder at the boys in the trenches that’s where it gets done
Again sorry for the mistakes I just don’t know how that justifies what has happen.

  30. MP2 says:

PS- I don’t know how he has not been very productive in the past on defense when he’s never been given a fair chance. There’s no debating that! And when he did get the chance he DID prove himself. We’ll see what happens this year…Good luck to all

  31. Smiles says:

Are you saying that he wasn’t given a fair chance in practice?

Popularity contest or not… that’s another outrageous comment -Matt Milano – State and school record setting qb…. Kevin Mcdonough, team leader in tackles – never came off the field defensively last year… Thomas Rochlin, 2 way starter on offensive line, productive on both sides of the ball… Bobby Distler, spiritual leader, great story coming back from injury and is well respected by coaches and players alike, also nominated lacrosse captain for next season.

    Bad choices in your opinion?

  32. Pat Mcgroin says:

A lot of hostility there. Killinger’s life is a fantastic success story. What a great high school offensive lineman. He is highly respected by his teammates and coaches. @MP2, you seem to know a lot, does the kid really feel down about not being a captain? Is there pre-season turmoil amongst the New Canaan players? This could be a great story…

  33. SWCFan95 says:

@CT-HS Football Fan – Casey Cochran is not 20 or 21, he is a normal 17-18 year old, that is an unfair statement. He has enough issues without wild rumors, he has been overlooked in recruiting due to other reasons, but you cannot take away his skills and mechanics, he is a love him or hate him kid, because he is good and works hard and plays for Masuk. No kid should be blamed for who his Dad is or has done.

  34. SWC1 says:

Valdir Nepomuceno should get recognition. Class of 2012
LB/RB will be a player to watch this up coming season. He is becoming bigger physically. Ive Heard his goal is 190lb and still be running his 4.63 40. Some schools has interest in him Salve Regina and WNEU.
Think about putting him in the list

  35. JonathanHuskeyDog says:

Rennick Bryan 6’3″ 310lbs OG/DT/LS from Hillhouse H.S. in New Haven was offered by Uconn.

  36. CT-HS Football Fan says:

@SWC Fan. I think Casey is an excellent qb (the best in the state) and I have even more respect for him that he’s a straight A student. I’m only raising the question because of age rumors that I heard and hope are not true. It is the first rule in the CIAC’s eligibility requirements. His Dads’s reputation does not help here.

  37. SWCFan95 says:

@ CT-HS Football Fan – Well maybe a crack investigative reporter like SPB should look into this rumor, CIAC rules do state age restrictions…did Masuk and his dad knowingly violate a rule? Rumors tend to be lies, many kids hate on this kid because he is a winner, but someone should verify it because it would be wrong. They don’t call it the Cochran scoring rule because it’s an honor!

That rule needs to go. 50 points then becomes not only a loss but let’s humiliate the losing team by taking knees at the goal line or stalling the clock. Win or lose, let kids play. The #1 QB recruits have ridiculous stats from Tx, Oh, Ca, FL, etc I’m sure they were not restricted by a “let’s all be friends rule”…50 points ridiculous. Ever heard of karma, what goes around comes around…that’s called rivalry.

  38. Clashmore Mike says:

Boeing Brown is the best QB prospect in the state, IMO. He has the arm, size and mobility. Cochran’s a great thrower, but I wonder if he is even 6′ tall.

  39. PompFan04 says:

Brown would have been the third best QB in the SWC behind Cochran and Croce, not to mention the New Canaan kid is better too.

  40. CT-HS Football Fan says:

I agree the 50 point rule needs to go.

  41. I’m going to concur with @Clashmore Mike. Brown’s got a boatload of colleges giving him looks. He’s junior and a prototype at 6-3, 210. Rivals.com has Boston College, UConn, Delaware, Florida, Maryland, Nebraska, North Carolina, Northwestern, UCF looking at him.

I’ll submit he’s one of the state’s top 5 returning QBs, easily. Matt Kelly was great, but Brookfield turned into a playoff team when he took control of the offense.

  42. Captainobvious says:

I’ve had the opportunity to see them both and Cochran is defiantly better. Cochran has more of a presence on the field, the kid is a cold blooded assassin at the high school level. If you haven’t had the opportunity to check one or both of them out, YouTube will show enough to back up my opinion. Cochran has been a winner, on the varsity level, since his freshmen year. I don’t think it’s even close, but that’s one guys opinion.

  43. FauxRealism says:

SPB wrote: “Agreed recruiting sites are in it to make money (as am I)”

Say it ain’t so, SPB! lol

  44. John says:

gonna be a lot of upset parents when most of the kids listed in the posts above don’t get the Div. 1 scholarship they were expecting….

  45. SWCFan95 says:

@Captainobvious – Um Casey cannot run, he will eat it when he gets pressure, so I am not sure how that will show at next level. He has had success in a program throwing to windows – long or short, but reading the field will be his challenge. He got the offer today to UCONN, congrats…we need CT kids to stay and play, its good for CT and SWC, so that is good news, I agree with SPB, I think Brown is the #1 or #2 pending how you want to rate, Stats no, but overall recruiting value – yes…he is quintessential Division 1 size, skill and is a competitor. Both are good QB’s and players, seem to be good kids. They both will bring a lot of good attention to Connecticut and SWC in realm of recruiting so many programs and kids will benefit….CT has traditionally 6 kids getting D1 recruitment, we are not respected for football! Time to change that…Also @John is totally correct there are a lot of kids on that list who will not get recruited or play at next level, def not Div 1, I hope the parents have reality checks!

  46. Addendum to my Brown comment. He’s a prototype, but still got a long way to go as a player.

  47. Captainobvious says:

Neither of them are burners! As far as reading the field, if you have payed attention to Masuk and it’s offense, the majority of their passing routes are dictated by the coverage. He is reading the field just fine right now and continues to work at it. He will put on a clinic this year! It will take a team with corners that can beat their receivers up a bit to beat them…… The team that beats them will also have to have a motor that doesn’t stop because that team is full speed all the time.

  48. hsfan says:

I have been at training sessions where both brown and cochran were throwing and it is not even close cochran fires the ball his technique is very crisp the high school recievers there could barey catch his balls. And I don’t know who was measuring but Brown is not 6-3 and is barely taller than Casey. I have also seen Both steve smith and cochran play and there is no comparison cochran was better. smith was more of a runner and he was very good but when I saw him against straford his senior year when they got blown out he missed a lot of open recievers that cochran would have never missed. And ifthe bunnell game was the only game that you saw him and were not impressed it was because bunnell played four deep the whole game and he did not force anything and let the running game win the game which showed a lot of maturity because he did not force anything.

@SPB-”48.Addendum to my Brown comment. He’s a prototype, but still got a long way to go as a player.”

Seems a bit of a double speak as well as a dig on the kid SPB. He was a Soph last year and accomplished a great deal leading his team to the Class M Semifinals. He will do well again this year and has serious college recruiting happening. There was a great two page article in the Brookfield Magazine today and the kid is humble and seems to be hard working. He is a “Player”, you cannot take away the toughness he showed vs Masuk (all season), many seniors in that game folded fast, he went 4-qrts, I saw that game, I was impressed. More impressed by Masuk defense over any other, they were 6-8 kids to every tackle all season. @Clashmore Mike said it well, Brown will be on top of many lists especially recruiting given size, experience and another good season.

Congratulations to Casey Cochran for getting the UCONN Offer, well deserved and good for CT HS recruiting and as well the kids on this list. Brown will be right there on top the next year along with Gordon, and a number of kids from Fairfield Co and Western CT I think. Fairfield County teams will have real battles, the SWC will have many too. The usual teams will be good again this year, it will be interesting in your polls where you place them if at all…Masuk, Brookfield, Pomperaug, Newtown, Bunnell, and Oxford seem solid.

Does anyone know where Brian Kelly or Will Arndt are going, are they going to college and if so are either playing football? Seems like many of the top kids from the Governors Cup are heading to Prep Schools, is that because of grades and what does that say about our best players then?

  51. CBrown says:

@SWCFan95 – Brian Kelly is going to Dean College in Mass. Planning to play football and then working to transfer to a four year program after a year or two. IDK Will Arndt, but my son said he is going to college, but not playing football. Congrats to Casey on UCONN offer, I think this is the first of many more to come in the next few months. Thank you for the nice comments on Boeing, he is working hard this off season, we had some great college visits and recruiting effort is busy. I think Leaon Gordon is under-appreciated in terms of recruiting, but will have a good year too. Good luck to all!

  52. CCC says:

Good luck to cochran at Uconn, but he will never start there. His High school stats against weak Ct. competition will never even come close to happening at Div 1 level. We’ll see.

  53. johnnyribbs says:

CCC – I would normally agree with that statement (regarding an overall weak schedule in the SWC). Yes Masuk is a very big fish in a mostly small pond in the SWC.

I saw Cochran in person (as a frosh) dismantle a very good Seymour team in the 2008 finals. I saw him in person (as a junior) route what was a four time repeat state champion New Canaan team at the Rent.

Don’t let the routes of Weston and New Fairfield take away from the stats. He has the goods and the pedigree.

  54. SWCPLAYER says:

? New Canaan and Seymour ? No where near the talent that’s recruited to Big east schools. High school comp in most other states way above Ct. Just being realistic.

-rennick bryan at temple? does he have a uconn offer?
    -whats up with taylor wrice?
    -paul spada?
-i think cheshire acd will have 2-4 bcs players from this years team

  56. JonathanHuskeyDog says:

    Dan,

See comment #36, and yes he was a Temple recently. All I know is that he always dreamed of being a Huskey. Time will tell where he will end up.

One thing to keep in mind is that the “interest” listing on Scout and Rivals is frequently only the schools a player (or his parents) say he is interested in. The school often has no interest whatsoever in the player. The only meaningful item on these sites is if the player has an offer or at least has taken an official visit (not an unofficial one).
