Your frontrunner for play of the year: Jalon White’s TD pass to Joe Burr

We now turn to the video recap portion of our week where we take a look back at some of the big games and big plays of Week One.

We’ll start off with a play that, frankly, raises the bar impossibly high for the next 11 or 12 weeks: Jalon White‘s third-quarter, rabbit-out-of-a-hat, 16-yard touchdown heave on third-and-goal to Joe Burr. The score proved to be crucial in a contentious, 20-19 North Haven victory over Hillhouse at Bowen Field on Friday.

You’re going to have to watch this a few times to actually figure out what happened. We especially love the guy yelling on the Hillhouse side of stands that it couldn’t possibly have counted.

Or in his words: “Ain’t no way, yo!”

We’re sure White, Burr and North Haven coach Tony Sagnella will insist they drew this one up on a chalkboard or in the dirt with a stick.

Yeah, right.

North Haven, which was down 19-7 before this play, eventually won on a White touchdown run and a blocked field goal attempt by Hillhouse with seconds remaining. The Indians are now ranked in the media’s top 10 for the first time since 1972.

That field goal block is a pretty good clip too. But nothing compared to this.

Will anything else compare this season?

Yahoo! Sports picked up this post Wednesday. It’s been subsequently picked up on news sites across the country.

The legend is actually becoming bigger than reality.

Big Lead Sports, for one, described it as the winning touchdown pass when in reality it was in the third quarter and only cut Hillhouse’s lead to 7.

What’s getting almost the same attention as White’s heroics is the fan who keeps screaming, ‘Ain’t No Way, Yo!’ on the video.

We’d love to track down the guy who said that. He had to have been sitting beneath or near the press box.

The game was pretty awesome, too. Catch those highlights courtesy of BirdsEye Sports below.

And SPB getting some publicity on Yahoo! Sports….Nice to get your name thrown out there….don’t go all Hollywood on us now….or are you already comin up with your catch phrases for your anchor spot on Sports Center…lol….”En Fuego”

  5. Chaz says:

hey, another fan watch it again and again. He WAS NOT down. You can see the ball out of his hand before he hits the ground. If he was down a lot of backlash would have come against the officials.

It was an entertaining play, for sure, but shouldn’t Play of the Year require some skill and not 95% luck?

SPB- when you hit Sportscenter, your catch phrase can be “Ain’t No Way, Yo!”

  7. This play is on sports center from what I’m told… and on ESPN all afternoon,
