The ‘Death Panel’ has spoken: NWC’s Tyler won’t be suspended

by:

Short and sweet: The CIAC “Score Management” committee — henceforth referred to here as the ‘Death Panel’  — has ruled that Northwest Catholic coach Michael Tyler will not be suspended for violation the 50-point policy in a 52-0 victory over Weaver on Saturday.

From the CIAC statement:

After a review of reports received from both schools involved and the game officials in regards to Northwest Catholic High School’s 52-0 varsity football victory over Weaver High School on Saturday, it has been determined that the proper sportsmanship protocols were followed, and that there was no violation of the CIAC Score Management policy by the winning school’s head coach.

Due to this fact the review committee will not take any action against Northwest Catholic High School in regards to Saturday’s game.

Well that’s a load off.

UPDATE: The Hartford Courant spoke to Weaver’s Kevin Quinn, who agreed with the ruling.

The world is safe from tyranny.

WHAT ARE THE PROPER PROTOCOLS? TAKING KNEES? TELLING J.V. RUNNERS TO FALL DOWN? NOT THROWING AFTER FIRST QTR.? CRAWLING OFF FIELD SO CLOCK RUNS OUT? OH THOSE RACIST RULES.ASK THE INNER CITY WEAVER TEAM HOW IT FELT TO BE EMBARRASED BY 52.IM SURE THEY LOVE THE COCHRAN RULE.

Sportmanship should be left in the hands of the players, coaches and officials who are participating in the contest.

Connecticut as a whole shoots itself in the foot, the 50-point rule hurts teams, players more so as we have to have good players, starters sit down in the 2nd quarter and miss out on half a game to be able to increase their stats for recruiting and playing a game they work so hard at. Maybe they need to align the leagues and drive further to plays games so LL plays LL, L plays L, etc, but having starters sit down a whole half while Florida, Georgia, California, Ohio, Illinois, New Jersey, Texas, and more keep going and recruiting scouts, programs, and people like Tom Lemming post “Top Players in Nation” are based on STATS….so while those places get 3,000+ yards or more in passing, recieving, rushing, our CT kids are limited to their full potential to then market on the national stage, and thereby down graded in stars or rankings because they look weaker, yes I know CT traditionally does NOT put out many D1 kids, but I think we should be heading in that direction instead of “lets all be nice and not hurt feelings” because the other teams cannot put a good product on the field. A loss is a loss regardless of score, a win is a win. Yes try not to rub it in every, show respect, but the players are the ones getting hurt in the long run as we eliminate them from the big stage…only a handful now can earn those numbers, but so many more probably could in rushing, passing, etc. It is a dumb rule…Leave the sportsmanship to the coaches.

kids play in youth leagues, these are young men who in a couple of years could be over seas protecting this country.we are making these young men soft.the real world isnt so nice.

  6. SWCFan95 says:

@Moses could not agree more, the real world is a harsh place at times, in business, in war, in life…we want Gentlemen, but warriers too…

  7. roto says:

No college coach has ever recruited someone based on statistics.

  8. Jamison says:

Okay, let’s be serious. The 50 point rule is inane and ridiculous, but it has very little bearing on CT not putting out many D1 kids or producing ‘soft’ kids. In a 50 point win a good QB or RB should rack up tons of yardage. If you realign and the good schools don’t play the lesser schools, guess what?, those QB and RBs are going to get LESS yardage. DBs won’t get as many interceptions, etc.

The reason CT doesn’t produce a lot of D1 kids is because we are a small, rich state. Now before anyone says, “I’m not rich!”, I’m talking in general. CT has very poor place and very rich places, but overall the average wealth is the highest in the country. That mean
that a very large portion of our kids don’t HAVE to get that football scholarship or they don’t to go to college. We are also a very small state, so we have less kids in the first place.

Football in CT is nowhere near as important as in places like Texas or Western Pennsylvania. There are JV teams out there who could win state titles in CT.

The 50 point rule is dumb because it makes one team stop trying at all. What’s more embarrassing losing by 50 and spend a half watching the other team make a mockery of the game by not trying or losing by 70? Good sportsmanship dictates that one should not run up the score on a beaten opponent, however if they’re not going to stop the game, a coach should be able to put in his subs and let them try. A coach shouldn’t have to send out his subs and tell them “Go down at first contact, don’t block too hard, I don’t want you to score.”

  9. CT-HS Football Fan says:

The 50 point rule should go, but as you all know it was instituted because one jackass (pun intended), his AD, and their Board of Education would do nothing to stop the humilation of other teams and of their own JV team who would never see the field.

There is nothing wrong with pulling your starters after the first half or first drive of the second half when you are up 42-0. And if your JV team goes in and wins the 2nd half 21-0 (63-0 game), no coach will ever get suspended.

And to hell with those of you who think personal stats are important. Building a championship program will result in more kids getting into better colleges than any personal stats will ever do for one individual.

  10. Master Legend says:

The CIAC is breeding wimps. This is just as bad as kids in youth sports not getting trophies because they don’t want the kids who didn’t win to feel embarrassed.

Here’s a test for the CIAC: Have 5 people with equal resumes interview for a job in their organization. Do they give all 5 people the job because they don’t want 4 people to feel that they’re not good enough? Or if one of the candidates is answering the questions better than the others, do they make him shut up to level the playing field?

This isn’t Cochran’s fault either. He taught his kids how to play football. Last time I checked, those guys didn’t do too bad. How many kids that played for Cochran got college scholarships that they would have had no chance to get otherwise. Or next time Dwight Freeney goes to cash a $5 million check, ask him if he regrets beating Windsor 90-0.

  11. The Dude says:

Meanwhile, what the heck is going on at Weaver? They were one of the states model teams 10-15 years ago.

  12. CT-HS Football Fan says:

Master Legend, it is Cochran and New London’s fault. The CIAC told him to stop it, he did nothing, they went to the AD about it, he did nothing, they went to the Principal, nothing got changed, and finally the Board of Ed. Since no one in the school system was willing to be more responsible and more sportsmanlike, the CIAC stepped in and instituted the rule. Again, see above, the CIAC will not suspend a coach for running up the score if it is done in a sportsmanlike manner. And kudos to your program if your JV team can go in and whip the other teams butt in the second half.

  13. moses says:

this wasn’t an issue until black and hispanic kids from new london were putting up crazy scores on the white kids from that side of the state….stop fooling yourselves by making this about jack or anything else.its a racist rule and ppl are just to full of it to admit it.

  14. JohnnyB says:

@Master – Weaver sports have been hit hard by the addition of magnet schools in the Hartford district. These kids on the team come from 9-10 different academies. Also, check the state rankings. Why have Windsor and Bloomfield have become so much better over the past few years? Simple, The Hartford kids are falsifying their addresses to go to school out of district. Now that’s not an accusation at all, its a fact. I live in Hartford and coach youth sports, and a good majority of those rosters live in my neighborhood. Once again not an accusation, just an unspoken fact.

  15. Master Legend says:

@moses- I agree. The CIAC gives special treatment to white people. Why else do you think lacrosse and swimming are sanctioned sports?? CIAC= Connecticut Interscholastic Alliance for Caucasians. They are an inherently racist organization dedicated to keeping minorities down. Why do you think predominantly white teams like New Canaan, Masuk and Greenwich are always winning state titles in football….because they’re talented?? NO!! Because the CIAC pays the refs to make sure they don’t lose to inner city teams.

  16. Jamison says:

@Master Legend – You actually think running up the score got kids scholarships? That if the score was 55-0 against Windsor, Freeney wouldn’t be in the NFL?

Oh, if you really want to compare it to the real world interview, you forgot one thing. In the real world, it matters who you know, so the objective best candidate is often NOT hired, but the candidate who knew someone at the company is hired. Is that what you think the CIAC should be encouraging?

@moses – Really? Stop fooling yourself. I had no idea what the make-up of his teams were or the make-up of the teams he was intentionally embarrassing. And it doesn’t matter. Running up the score on a team that has already been blown out is just wrong.

  17. CCC says:

The rule is no good, if the JV is in and scoring. It’s designed for those coaches who leave starters in, into the 4th quarter, passing the ball, running up scores and stats. That does nothing positive for anyone.

  18. Master Legend says:

@Jamison- I am not at all implying that running up the score got those kids scholarships. What I said was that Cochran taught them how to play football the way it was intended. Exposing opponents’ weaknesses, flying to every loose ball, maximizing your abilities, etc. When football was invented, I doubt James Naismith envisioned the best players on one team sitting on the sidelines with their pads off as their backups took 4 knees in a row. If you have ever been to a game where the 50 pt rule was close to coming in to play, you know that’s it fun for NOBODY involved.

If anything, the coach of the team that LOSES by 50 should be suspended for a game. Maybe that would motivate him to get his kids into the weightroom a little more. Why punish kids for being good at something?

  19. PompFan04 says:

James Naismith? Didn’t he invent BASKETBALL?

  20. CCC says:

Jamison, if the starters were pulled before the score was 54 – 0, the JV team would actually get to play, and score, not take knees. But when a coach lets starters run up the score, then pulls them so the 2nd string can’t do anything but take a knee, that’s running up the score, and wrong. Period.

  25. zeke says:

I can only tell you what New Canan does if they have a 30 point lead in a game. The coaches simply go to the officials and say if we score a TD call it back no matter what. Period. That why NC had 14 penalties this saturday.

  26. Master Legend says:

You guys apparently aren’t too keen on irony I take it.

And, yes, ray brown was technically in my history class. Someone had to teach it….

  27. Honus says:

Zeke, I guess that means NC is going to rack up 50 penalties against Warde? lol Good try.

  28. Chuck Norris says:

I don’t see what all the fuss is over. There is a rule set in place. If you break the rule there are consequences. There are plenty of unfair rules in like also, that doesn’t mean we get to just choose not to follow them. there are also exceptions to every rule. if you put your JV and sophomores in and they are still scoring then the amendment of the rule in question goes before a committee. however if you leave the starters in until 5 minutes left in the forth quarter and you run up the score what is the point you are trying to prove? Who cares? If nobody likes the rule its really simple, go become a head football coach in the state of Connecticut (we all know that half of you on here are assistants anyway) write a petition and get the rule changed. but a wise man once said what goes around comes around and one day down the road someone is gonna put up 50 of Masuk and mr. murphy isn’t going to like that one very much. It one thing to win, winning with class is something totally different. Legacy is important to some of us. How you want to be remembered can be seen as important to some people. I personally would want to be remembered as a class act rather then classless. but hey call me old fashioned and educated.

  29. Jamison says:

@Master Legend – Very keen on irony, so keen I know the difference between irony and sarcasm.

CIAC pays the refs to through the games? Wow! You really think these games are that important?

  30. Master Legend says:

No, I said that they pay the refs to THROW the games. That was also, as you so deftly put it, sarcasm. Stop drinking so much of yourself and it might start to make sense.

  31. Jamison says:

@Master Legend – The only way some of the stuff you wrote makes sense is if I do drink. A lot.
