Hey SPB, can I get a prediction of the Staples-Darien game? I know Staples has speed and all, but the Blue Wave “knows how to win.” It’s funny because it won’t end up mattering, cause the winner will probably lose to New Canaan in the FCIAC Championship. Plus, I don’t see either of those teams advancing far in the State Playoffs, especially Darien. Class L is stacked this year, with Masuk, Daniel Hand, and New Canaan all being better football teams than Darien.
I gotta admit this week is the toughest to predict so far.
No Brainers: Stamford over Ludlowe; Greenwich over Westhill
McMahon vs Ridgefield: Gotta take the gutsy McMahon team over a Ridgefield team that hasn’t lived up to expectations, even with an immobile Vega.
Danbury vs Trumbull: Trumbull lost to teams with a 16-1 combined record and beat teams a combined 0-12. I say they beat Danbury, a .500 team.
St Joes vs Warde: Warde prevails.
Central vs North Haven: Central has been an FCIAC doormat this year. I don’t see that changing vs a decent SCC team
NC vs Wilton: If Wilton couldn’t handle Darien’s passing attack, ain’t no way they are going to handle NC’s.
That’s all the big games.
I would think that Staples , Darien game is gonna be the game of the week here in Fairfield. I am going with Darien in this one. The weather will be Raw, its gonna be a big fan draw, and its a family affair. Got get to the dugout early for a southport favorite, hot sausage breakfast , grilled mash and a few cups of Joe and I will be ready for some fciaction. Darien 34 / Staples 31
Here’s my take on Darien vs Staples. Darien is the defending FCIAC champion. Darien has proven over and over again this season they know how to win. Not win pretty, just win. Having seen both teams play, I gotta say Staples is more talented top to bottom while Darien has more “names”. Does Staples has the inner toughness yet to win a truly big game? McMahon showed they have a fighting spirit, but was it against a team they knew they should beat? Does Staples really believe they can beat Darien? Does Staples have as good senior leadership as Darien? Are the Staples kids as mentally fit? Are they ready for prime time? Prediction – I have to be honest: zmhojdojwopd tojx tfmqbut
honus, teams danbury lost to are a combined 16-1 as well,il take the hatters in a close game. Staples 17-7 20-7ish type of game,i really like them this year very well rounded team. Also taking ridgefield against mcmahon, they will bounce back.
Im new to this blog but I think its the best one of its type in CT. I am a Westie supporter and alumni.I think we have our hands full this week at the Surf Club.I think Hand is one of top 3 in state after XHS and Masuk. They are so consistent in what they do and they play with pride. They have been top program for a long time not just recently.Plus they play at that band box of a place which will be packed with Blue Devils coming to town.Good luck Coach McCarthy but this is a tough one!!!
McMahon at Ridgefield
Two teams that can’t win a big game. Fortunately for them, this is no longer considered a big game.
New Canaan at Wilton
Congrats to Matt Milano for breaking the career TD pass record at one of CT’s most storied programs.
St. Joseph at Fairfield Warde
The Cadet-Hogs are making mental notes of all the teams who are kicking them while they’re down. Once their next good recruiting class comes in, those teams on the list (and Ray Brown) better look out!
Crosby at Ansonia
Arkeel Newsome gets a chance to run over his former Pop Warner teammates.
Wolcott at Watertown
Wolcott actually leads Ansonia in the NVL Brass Division standings. In political news, Herman Cain is the leading Republican candidate for president right now. Similar situations.
Derby at Torrington
Red Raiders win this one, hands down.
West Haven at Hand
A big statement win here could vault Hand ahead of Ansonia in the state polls. What does that mean in the scheme of things? Absolutely nothing.
Shelton at Amity
Both of Shelton’s losses have been shutouts, but Gaels should be able to score in this Housy battle.
Hillhouse at Xavier- The X-Men barely escaped Bowen Field with a win last year.
Bunnell at Bethel
I know a win’s a win, but Bunnell’s mojo must have taken a little hit after Friday night.
Masuk at New Milford
New Milford fans have been coveting more attention in the media. Too bad for the Cochran rule, because losing by 75 would have done the trick.
Newtown at Brookfield
The Nighthawks need to win three out of their last four to have any chance at making LL field. That’s no easy task, as they visit the Bobcats and host Bethel before finishing with Bunnell and Masuk. Who says the SWC is easy? Oh yeah, Masuk says that.
O’Brien Tech at Bullard Havens Tech
Bullard gets my vote for worst game field in the state. If you have nothing better to do, go see for yourself. Actually, I take that back. If you have nothing better to do, clean out your gutters, then go to the gym, then go see for yourself.
Harding at Norwalk
The curse of #8 in Bowley’s Elite Eight does not apply in this one.
Westhill at Greenwich
The Cardinals could quietly work their way into the LL field. And nobody outside of Greenwich wants to see that. Unless you’re a Greenwich alum and have moved out of town.
Darien at Staples
Two undefeated teams square off. Based on their results against common opponents, both teams will win. Am I understanding that concept correctly?
New Fairfield at Weston
Weston needs to keep winning to keep their Class S playoff hopes alive. Trojans haven’t seen the postseason since 1989.
@theruler – Good catch. Danbury lost to Darien by 3, Norwalk by 6, and Staples by 19, while Trumbull lost all three of their games by over 20. I was basing my pick on “but it’s Trumbull.” Objectively, Danbury has played better. Similarly, objectively, I’ve been blown away with how good Staples has looked this year. We’re talking “can give Xavier a game” good. But look at the World Series and see how emotion, chemistry, and leadership is just as important. Does this year’s Staples team have that? You can’t measure those things until the conditions are right. Well, the conditions are right with the scoreboard the measuring stick.
Darein will score against a young staples team, and darien is very opportunistic with possibilities to win the game. i personally believe that staples team speed is going to be a little overwhelming for the wave. im gonna go with Staples 24 Darien 17
Re: Staples vs. Darien. With(or without)the weather forecast this game will be won in the trenches. I’m going with Staples with a right tackle at 265lbs, left tackle at 255lbs, 3 interior olineman averaging 240lbs. Its no coincidence why Staples has been racking up the yards this season and this group gets better each game and showed they can dominate a game with a great performance at Trumbull.
Pitfall–No Staples team would ever get pushed around by Ansonia or anyone else. They might lose but every game Staples plays is always very competitive. Go back several years ago when those mighty Bunnell teams were given fits by the wreckers or Cheshire three years ago.

Staples is just an EP.ED.ED. kinda team and will get it done in all facets of the game. Staples by 17 with a rowdy homecoming crowd. The game will be over by 1PM just in time for LAX practice.
Maybe I’m nuts but what is it that makes people think Ansonia is so dominant each and every year? They have a great tradition and really good teams each year but I saw them lose to a cromwell team a few years back so no state title that year. I saw them lose last year to Joes and this year we’ll see. Couldn’t a lot of teams from around the state have a featured back to carry the ball 40 times a game and gain 300+ yards vs those NVL teams. If anyone here thinks Staples would get killed by them their nuts. I’m not saying they are not good nor am I saying their backs aren’t great I’m just defending other teams out thier that would not get killed by them. Darien included.
@Brian last year Ansonia was a young, young team with M Dobbs. Now they are older and experienced with the next coming of Floyd Little. Dobbs and Thomas were great but Newsome is only a Soph and killing everyone.
Ansonia would punish alot of teams around the State this year and there is nothing wrong with that. The problem is that alot of people from the well to do areas could not stand thinking that some Valley School which was a S and SS in years past could push them around the field. They are a top 5 program all time in the State.

Jesse,
I think the problem is a lot of people are actually living on planet earth. Let’s not beat around the bush, Ansonia has a tremendous history, but saying they would push around a perennial powerhouse is a little too much sillyness.
As I do a little bit of homework I notice that Ansonia lost 49-28 to a 3 loss St Joes team last year in Class S final? And still ran for 300+ yds on a 12 minute clock? And the year before that 24-0 to Cromwell? I have always respected Ansonia and you would be foolish to argue against Ansonia being a great football program, but lets refrain from starting fires with nothing to burn.
Is that the same John-Dylan Romann who played at Staples in the 2004 season. He caught our RB from behind to clinch a win for Staples in the playoffs. No wonder he is hyping the Wreckers.
@ dobbs got 300 plus vs. st.joes, a fciac team ,and they did lose 24-12 to cromwell.you cant win every game, the key is to get there every year.they did beat cromwell 55-0 a couple years earlier and st.joes needs to win a game before it gets back into playoffs.if those teams rematched this year the 50 point rule would be in play.you have done little homework, check the past 30 years and let me know what your calculator comes up with.
staples is always tough, darien is usually good too.however matching teams up without actually playing is banging your head against wall, unless theres a definitive margin between them.
I clearly went out of my way to acknowledge the fine history that Ansonia has. But I was merely pointing out to your Charger brethren above that Ansonia would not push teams in the FCIAC (such as Staples/Darien, etc) “ALL OVER THE FIELD ” , which is just bologna.
@JDR yes they lost to SJ last year. A Senior laden team and like i stated an Ansonia team that started mostly Jrs and Sophs. This year would be totally different and this years team is one of the best in the State.
Jesse – appreciate your perspective but why is it when Ansonia loses it isn’t we lost to a better team? SJ was the better team last year – several strong players that had been together for 4 years. Ansonia is a year older and SJ is starting over this year – how does Ansonia beating SJ this year affect last years game – it doesn’t – who cares who would win this year – when the game was played on the field you lost. I love the tradition but really when I hear some of the comments on the blog I wonder if the guys that send in comments ever played or just talked a good game.
I’m an ansonia guy but this year and last year are totally different, listen St joes was awesome last year no doubt about it, they were good but thats last year you can’t compare the two teams.
I’ve seen Masuk and Xavier, Xavier wins by 3 TDs. Masuk is NOT that good. And why does the New Haven Register love Hand, Hand is NOT good. Please if it wasn’t for that team Xavier SCC is a joke. People hate on NVL but rest of the state is down bad. SWC the so weak conference is pitiful!
DId I not say they weren’t better? They were more experienced team it happens. But to say that they couldn’t beat Staples or Darien. Youa re saying perrenial powerhouses, that’s Ansonia. How many State Championship games have they won or actually been in? Ansonia has been in more and won more than both combined. So you get off your high horse and come back to planet Earth. you guys areliving on cloud 9 down there and need to visit sometime.
You really do not want to list the teams Ansonia has defeated in past Playoffs do you ? Maybe a handful of Marquee matchups Ansonia has had in the past. When they did move up to stronger classes they lost.Defeating Notre Dame {FFLD} and a 1st year Cromwell in Tinney’s senior year is not an accomplishment in many peoples eyes.2011 Class M champion{Ansonia}will be another footnote to who was the top teams of 2011,It also will reflect in the final polls.
#35 said: “Class M champion{Ansonia}will be another footnote to who was the top teams of 2011,It also will reflect in the final polls.”
Not sure that makes sense. If Ansonia wins Class M, they will be ranked #3 in the final poll. Exactly where they have been for most of the year. (This is assuming Masuk and Xavier win out.) Xavier and Masuk are the consensus top two teams. Ansonia will be third, no shame in that. Those top three are probably accurate.
If those three all finish unbeaten, this will be the first year since 2004 that CT has more than two undefeated teams. There were a surprising four of them in 04. Without looking, can anybody name them?
2007 there were 3 undefeated teams – Bunnell, Greenwich and Ansonia. As for 2004 – my guess would include Pomperaug and Staples. Not sure of the others.
@ 36
If all 3 teams you mentioned go undefeated, then you will remember marquee victories.Xavier will have a bunch with the biggest most likely coming at the final games.Masuk will have a few towards seasons end and in playoffs and then not sure what Marquee victories Ansonia will have for the season or playoffs.
Dear Chargerguy,
Being objective , if Ansonia tried to beat Masuk rather then trying to keep the game close, then Masuk beat Ansonia something like 52 to 21. If You try to just keep it close than you only lose 28 -7.
You can take Newsome off Ansonia’s team and they would still go undefeated. Take Cocheran from Masuk and they still go undefeated. Take Kelly from Staples again undefeated. But if you take Milano away from New Canaan the only teams they beat are Bassick and Trinity. Maybe ST.Joes. Sorry New Canaan fans but that’s the TRUTH.
Jeb I agree with the above. BUT the only reason Ansonia and masuk would still go undefeated without those 2 guys is the awful schedule they both play. usually losing your best play would spell doom. And don’t tell me the backups are that good to replace them. it would be the schedule only.
If you look at New Canaan’s sched they haven’t beaten anyone this year. Bassick, Trinity Cath, Fairfirld Warde, Brien McMahon, Norwalk, St Joes, and Wilton with a combined 19 wins, that’s not even 3 wins per team. Nobody they have played is even in a playoff picture, just one on the schedule in Darien.
Ansonia has played Torrington, Woodland, Derby, Holy Cross, Seymour, Watertown, and Crosby. For a combined total of 26 wins just over 3 wins per team. 1 playoff team played Holy Cross with one to go in Wolcott.
Masuk hasn’t played anyone yet either Oxford, New Fair, Stratford, Joel Barlow, NDF, Immaculate, and New Milford for a total of 11 wins, just over 1 a piece. They have their biggest tests coming up with Pomperaug, Weston, and Newtown, 2 Newtown and Pomperaug in the playoff picture.
Windsor has the toughest schedule: 27 wins, and two likely playoff teams! Amazing how little trouble they’ve had in the rough-and-tumble CCC.
Would also hate to be Capital Prep/Classical Magnet – 19 wins (from just six games) and two likely playoff teams. Grueling, grueling schedule. Almost as tough as Ansonia’s.
(My point being this: we’re humans, not the CIAC power point system. We have better ways of measuring strength of schedule. Would love to see McMahon, Wilton or Norwalk in this year’s NVL – provided they had the good fortune of avoiding Ansonia, they’d almost certainly be undefeated.)
Have to agree with James. While Ansonia and Masuk are strong and deserve their top of of the state rankings, their regular season competition to-date are mostly S-level schools that would struggle to win a game in the SCC or FCIAC. But does the tougher schedule really better prepare New Canaan or New London to take on Masuk? I just think, no matter what league Masuk plays in, they would mostly dominate. Ansonia likely the same, although not as certain against the top defenses in the SCC and FCIAC. But the cold truth is that Xavier is defending its rating every week against much better competition than Masuk or Ansonia and, as long as it keeps dominating tougher opponents, Xavier’s number one position will just get stronger.
@jeb-Great points about Ansonia/Masuk.Big Blue tried to ram ball down St.Joes throat last year[which they did] and still gave up 49 points. This years Masuk team beats last years St.Joes team by at least 2 or 3 scores.Does anyone in the NVL even attempt a forward pass?Oh ya,that would be Derby and St.Pauls[2 wins combined].Valley guys go back to sleep.Stop talking about games 30 yrs ago.Got that Ray Brown.
First, last year’s Masuk team was probably one to two scores better than a St. J’s team that (when healthy) was very, very good. But the game may have been closer than you think.
Second, don’t even attempt to compare last year’s Ansonia’s team to the 2011 squad. How Ansonia even made the finals with a defense that was their weakest in many years was a mystery. And a veteran, talented St.J’s team led that championship game by only 6 points with 6 minutes to go.
Teams (including St.J’s) put 9 and even 10 players in the box and still Dobbs ran for over 300 yards in each playoff game behind a young, smallish OL.
If you don’t think that Ansonia, now with an older, bigger and stronger OL, an incredibly talented tailback, and weapons in the passing game if needed, along with a much, much better defense, can’t play with anyone in the state, your Ansonia-hate makes you incapable of being objective.
PAUL HAD NAUGATUCK IN NVLMCHAMPIONSHIP GAME THIS YEAR.HE WONT DIVULGE WHAT PROGRAM HE SUPPORTS ,BECAUSE ITS EASY TO JUMP FROM TEAM TO TEAM.PAUL, HOWS ST.JOES DOING THIS YEAR? STOP TALKING ABOUT PAST,GET IT.
Funny how the kids playing the game never seem to belittle the competition, only the fans who feel they “don’t get the respect” they deserve! Ansonia is good, Masuk is good, both could play anywhere. Unfortunately, the arguement will not be settled on the field. MaxPreps rankings seem most scientific to me: 1-Xavier, 2-Hand, 3-Ansonia, 4-Masuk, 5-Windsor, 6- New London, 7- Bunnell, 8- Darien, 9- North Haven, 10- Torrington. This gives credibility to SCC strength but does not take away from those teams that take care of business with the schedule given it.
Masuk last year would have beaten both Ansonia and Joes by more than 2 scores easily. Masuk could score in an instant and everytime they kicked it back to u, u needed to go 80 yards as every kick was a touchback. Joes and Ansonia were real good but couldn’t play with Masuk or Xavier last year.
If Ansonia wins Class M then Class M would be weak, if they moved up again and went into Class and won then Class L would be weak as well. It’s ridiculous that some of you cannot see past the Fairfield/New Haven County line.
Who do they have to beat?
You don’t think that they could beat Newtown, Bunnel, New London, North Haven, New Canaan, Hall or Pomperaug?
These are all teams within the top 8 of the Class L and LL and I believe that the Chargers would and could send them home with a loss. Maybe not 49-0 but by 2-3 scores.
And Naugatuck, Holy Cross, Woodland, and Torrington can play FB with the best of them.
Chuck Norris sorry about Norwalk. Didn’t mean to overlook them.
I think the best way to put it is the people that don’t like Ansonia would like to see them play at some point a few real tough games back to back. Naugy,HC Woodland, and Torrington would not play with any of those teams u listed above this year except maybe Pomperaug.
Is that the same Naugy team that beat Derby by a point and the same HC team that beat Sacred Heart by 7?Has Torrington held a NVL opponent under 35 points this year?Is Chris Anderson still coaching at Woodland?Yes,what a league…….
Ansonia would lose to quite a few peoplethis year in my opinion. Those teams being Xavier, masuk, staples, and new canaan. St joes would have by 7 tds to masuk last year.
Ansonia can’t do anything about their schedule or the way class M is looking. They are making the teams they do play look helpless. All the pieces are there and if you have seen them play you would have to like their chances against anyone. They have a big offensive line, tall athletic WR’s, solid QB and hands down the best running back in the state. On defense they have two very good man coverage corners, fast linebackers, big Dline and, like all the better teams, there seems to be 7 or 8 guys on every tackle.
Hopefully next year the powers that be get together and put a solid opponent on the schedule. It won’t be easy because they have a ton of talent coming back and teams don’t want to take the chance at losing to a smaller school.
@UBilly – Here are the current MaxPreps rankings: 1. Xavier, 2. Hand, 3. Ansonia, 4. Notre Dame, 5. Staples, 6. New Canaan, 7. Masuk, 8. Norwalk, 9. West Haven, 10. Windsor. Does anyone know what formula they use?
Hey Chuck Norris, you might want to put down whatevr you’re drinking and try to engage in an intelligent discussion without the hyperbole.
Xavier/Ansonia and Ansonia/Masuk would be intriguing match-ups. Xavier’s defense is scary good, with a big line that could give the Ansonia offense problems. But the X-men are nothing special on offense, and would struggle to score.
No high school offense can limit Cochran IF he has the time to throw (not a given against Ansonia, or Xavier for that matter). But the Masuk D (not as good as the 2010 version) would have difficulty getting off the field against Ansonia, who would dominate TOP.
Don’t even think about including New Canaan and their soft defense, or a vanilla team like Staples in the discussion!
Max Preps has different standings for the Class playoff standings as well.
In Class LL they have Chesire #6 in the CIAC website they are 19. record is showing the same. West haven 4 CIAC 12. They have Hall 17 CIAC 7. So whatever they use is far different than the CIAC.

LOL, at Bay’s comment about Bullard Havens Field. I’ve been there once. Most backyards are more suitable for football games then that place.
Jesse,

Jesse,
I think the problem is a lot of people are actually living on planet earth.
ONCE AGAIN, I’ve screwed up the Fairfield Prep game. It starts at 6 p.m.
Ray Brown,
I clearly went out of my way to acknowledge the fine history that Ansonia has.
2007 – forgot to include – undefeated in CT.
Fans:
@Jesse -
Norwalk is a playoff team.
Jesse –
Paul,
First, last year’s Masuk team was probably one to two scores better than a St.
PAUL KNOWS.
@UBilly. Those aren’t the rankings I see on MaxPreps. I see NDWH at 6 and Torrington at 34.
Max Preps stinks. Don’t know squat about CT sports. Only NJ and LI for football purposes.
In Class M they have Brookfield #7 and CIAC has the 19. Hillhouse #3 and CIAC has them 15.
How Maxprep does their rankings, pretty dang good too!!!

link for how Maxprep does their rankings, pretty dang good too!!!
And remember Masuk beat New Canaan last year 50-20 or something like that, is that the best the FCIAC had to offer against the weak SWC?
