Who are your Regional Players of the Year?

by:

The 2011 season is over. Girls basketball is already live. Boys basketball and hockey and wrestling etc, etc get underway this week.

But we’re not done with high school football just yet (are we ever?). While football teams from all over say goodbye to their seniors, welcome their freshmen and dive into the long offseason, there’s still one final bow to make in the 2011 season.

It’s time to recognize the best players in the region.

Who was the best of the best of the best?

There is a more involved system going on behind the scenes at Hearst Connecticut Newsgroup for an all-area team that will be unveiled around Christmas week, but here’s a chance for players and fans to lobby for their top picks.

It’s going to require a lot of thought on your part. Picking these teams are tantamount to moving Chess pieces around a board. Typically, we have a bunch of deserving players and only a few spots. So we usually try to slot players into their secondary positions (OL vs. DL etc.) to truly get the best 22 (or so) players on the team.

Here are the categories:

We would like your TOP 2 in the following positions (TOP 5 on the offensive line). There can be NO repeat selections.

OFFENSE: QUARTERBACK, RECEIVER/END, RUNNING BACK, OFFENSIVE LINE (5), KICKER
DEFENSE: DEFENSIVE LINE, LINEBACKER, DEFENSIVE BACK, PUNTER
ALL-PURPOSE (This spot is reserved for men who excel in a variety of spots and don’t fit into any of the above categories).
PLAYER OF THE YEAR: You can pick anybody from above.

*Important*: You must list them like this:

QB: name, school; name, school…
RB: name, school; name, school…
WR: name, school; name, school…

Any comments you’d like to make MUST come after the selections.

The Connecticut Post, Stamford Advocate, Danbury NewsTimes and Greenwich Time coverage area includes:

All of the FCIAC, all of the SWC and the following schools from the SCC, NVL and CCC: Shelton, Law, Foran, Amity, Notre Dame-WH, West Haven, Fairfield Prep, Ansonia, Seymour, Derby/O‘Brien Tech, Bullard-Havens, Platt Tech, Abbott Tech. (A few fringe teams are being discontinued from our coverage area because they never called our offices to report their games this season).

All other teams are ineligible. This is a regional awards list, so as much as many of you would love to chime in on your favorite players from around the state, please don’t.

Awright? Let’s go…

Perspective, why did you even post yours? You put a list together that everyone else did. Have at least one thought of your own please. You’re a fact checker/stat trackee

  13. Tigers25 says:

Too much swc bias, not enough fciac or nvl.

    WR: Vitale, Hand; Chisholm, Bunnell
LB: Nashtowski, Greenwich; Cherry, Trumbull (if played the whole year)
    DB: #4 Xavier, Flynn, Masuk

  18. perspective says:

@tigers 25, idiot how am i a fact checker, haven’t seen morlock, wilson, gravitte, sebben, or richardson on anyone else’s team, I know I have seen more than most of the area’s best players, keep saying nonsense, don’t have a dog in the hunt but whats your deal?

  19. perspective says:

p.s. its a consensus with many of the kids because they are clearly the best at their positons, I wouldn’t have millone ahead of the kid from windsor or vitale from hand but they are not in the region; same goes for markus, not better than lytton from torrington or mckinnon from new london, but some of you fools didn’t possess exceptional reading comprehension proficency.

  20. Tigers25 says:

You have 1 staples and 1 NC player. Don’t worry your kid would have lost to NC if they made it that far. What number was your son on Masuk?

  21. Tigers25 says:

Do not check my reading skills, if you knew where I do my graduate coursework you’d be very intellectually inferior. Trust me… My job requires nothing but analytical reading. Unless you have the same career as I, you can’t compare.

  22. Frank bethel says:

Tigers25 is just upset no ridgefield players made it. if you watched football, you’d know markus and milone deserve it. not all of us got to watch fciac football.

    QB- Cochran-Masuk Milano-NC
    RB Newsome-Ansonia Fenaroli-Newtown
    WR- Chisholm-Bunnell Milone-Masuk

    RB- Gordon-Brookfield, Fenaroli-Newtown
    WR- Hebert-Newtown, Chisolm-Bunnell
    DE- Serencis-Bethel,
    LB- Flynn-Masuk, Bivona-Bunnell
    DB- Hebert-Newtown, Coleman-NDFFLD

Player of the year: Hebert: saw him play 3 games, was best player on field in all three.

Only saw SWC, so that is why it is “my” list… Brown did not have the stats expected this year, but is the real deal, and should be on any list of best Qb’s in the area. Next year it will come down to him and Castelot for best QB in the SWC, now that Casey is gone. Gordon is a tremendous talent, often overlooked.

  40. BossBlog says:

    @another fan

I agree that Matos would be a star in another system. He is 6’1″ 195 lbs with a god given ability to catch the ball with his hands. He also has speed (runs track). Hopefully, next year, but not betting on it, they learn that they have other weapons and 3rd down isn’t the only down you can pass on.

  41. KindOfBlue says:

    OFFENSE:

    QB: Cochran, Masuk; Krieger, Derby.
    RB: Newsome, Ansonia; Fenaroli, Newtown.
    WR: Chisholm, Bunnell; Milone, Masuk.
    OL: Full Ansonia offensive line.
K: Paola, Pomperaug; Shapiro, New Caanan.

    DEFENSE:

    DL: Larovera, Ansonia; Richardson, ND.
LB: McDonough, New Canaan; Wood, Ansonia.
    DB: Flynn, Masuk; Fruscaiante, Staples.

    Utility player: Lester, Ansonia.
    Player of year: Newsome, Ansonia.
Coach of year: Marinelli, New Canaan.

Comment: understand there was no request for coach, but after seeing that team in championship game two years in a row, I’m convinced Marinelli’s coaching got them there both times.

  42. ECC says:

    What about kyle McKinnon?

  43. KindOfBlue says:

    @42

    Great player.

    Read the rules.

  44. KindOfBlue says:

    @BossBlog:

Also a big Matos fan. He may be the most underrated WR in this part of the state.

    Next year will be interesting.

    That big OL is gone.

    Brockett is not stupid.

He’s always done a good job fitting his offense to his players.

    That’s what good coaches do.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see him open it up if he has anyone who can chuck it.

  45. SWC says:

    QB: Castelot, Bunnell; Cochran, Masuk
    RB: Newsome, Ansonia; Beckford, NDF…
WR: Chisolm , Bunnell ; Vasquez, Bunnell
    All Purpose: Beckford, NDF

    DB: coleman, NDF
    Lb: Xumbo, NDF; Valenti, Pomp

  46. footballfan says:

Tough to choose, but there should be some obvious selections…
    QB – Casey Cochran, Masuk
RB-Colin Markus, Masuk, Arkel Newsome, Ansonia
WR – Thomas Milone, Masuk; James Frusciante, Staples
    DB- Shawn Flynn, Masuk

  47. Tigers25 says:

Where did brockett play his high school ball?

  48. BossBlog says:

    @KindOfBlue
His resume speaks for itself, nobody can argue that point. A kid like Matos, who has all state and next level ability, could have a few more touches. Newsome scored pretty much at will so to lose a down here or there wouldn’t make much difference.
He coaches state champions, I’m writing on a blog and pissing into the wind so take it for what it’s worth. They absolutely dominated on both sides of the ball this year. Any time your the first to do something in CT high school football it’s impressive…… They had a few firsts!

  49. Spreado says:

I agree with the posts about Matos. Place him on Masuk, bunnel, derby or any decent passing team and this guy is an All stater. Size and speed. With the bulk of Ansonia skill guys returning hopefully they throw it more. Two good and athletic Qbs Lester will be a SR and McKnight a soph.

  50. Tigers25 says:

    Was he a good player?

  51. KindOfBlue says:

    @Spreado

Yes, McKnight is an interesting player.

I think some opponents may hope the pipeline stops after Newsome.

I doubt many of them know about McKnight.

They have plenty of skill players next year. Just hope they can get some linemen ready.

  52. Master Legend says:

A couple of rant items on the menu:

Since no one seems to grasp the concept that they’re only suppposed to be selecting players from THIS REGION, I’ll add my top players.

    QB- Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay
    RB- Trent Richardson, Tuscaloosa
    WR- Calvin Johnson, Detroit

It is absolutely mind-boggling that people can not grasp this concept. Hand is not in the CT Post circulation area, therefore, Vitale, Walsh, Dimichele , etc, are great players, but not eligible. No wonder our country is gonna be third world within 15 years. People are too stupid to even fill out a high school football All Star ballot.

Post season awards are not based on potential, they’re based on what a player did during the season. So while Boeing Brown may have more size and arm strength than Casey Cochran or Matt Milano, his results do not justify his inclusion. (I don’t mean to single out Brown, just making a point. He did the most he could with what he was working with this year.) This is the same reason RG3 got the Heisman and not Andrew Luck. Luck wll be first pick, but RG3 had the numbers this year.

  53. Star says:

    QB – Casey Cochran, Masuk

  55. Hanging Chad says:

Wow – I can’t believe how many of these submissions are ineligible!

    1) CT Post Region only
    2) Format:
    QB: name, school; name, school

  56. facts says:

    QB-Cochran / Milano
    WR-Milone / Piontkowski
    RB – Fennaroli / Newsome / Markus
Player of the Year – Cochan / Newsome tie

  57. Master Legend says:

@Tigers25- yes, he was, but who cares? Good players don’t automatically become good coaches. Was Bill Belichick a good football player? Does it matter?

  70. James says:

That is, without a doubt, one of the worst preseason Top Tens I’ve seen. And I’ve seen a lot of bad ones over the years.

  71. Tigers25 says:

    How so?

  72. No Axe to Grind says:

WOW…Tigers25 is all fired up…I have never heard someone that claims to be so smart come across as so moronic. You comment on people having a biased towards the SWC, when you CLEARLY have a biased towards the FCIAC. Can you say hypocrite. You trash perspective’s list, but you don’t post your own…hmmmm…sounds like a coward to me. And, as it turns out, the majority of the people here seem to agree with his list, especially when it comes to Markus and Milone. I guess that a LOT of people here don’t know football like you do. Perhaps your biased is clouding you vision. Your comment about New Canaan beating Masuk “if they made it” is just speculation and…if you go on last seasons Class L Championship Game results when New Canaan was a stronger team than this year and lost to Masuk by 30…it also doesn’t add up.

Thanks again for telling us how smart you are…because your posting seems to contradict that fact(I won’t even get into your preseason top 10 list). We all are honored and much better off by your very presence.

  73. BunnellRBS says:

Gosh, Bunnell RB’s can’t get any love?

  74. Tigers25 says:

Read the all fciac team. A lot of my preseason picks have many guys from those teams. I let facts do my talking. Better luck in your next debate… Sucka!!!

  75. RAY BROWN says:

whatt! hand is in madison–for all that tuition at least they could have bought you a map.

  76. PompFB says:

SPB – When will we see your list of Regional Players?

  77. @pompFb – Our team is released Christmas Weekend. Compiling it now.

Toughest spot, every year, is linebacker. 6 or 7 deserving candidates and only four spots…

  78. PompFB says:

@SPB – I hear you. O-Line must be tough because there are no stats tied to performance other than how many yards the running back gets on that team. You can argue that Ansonia’s entire O-Line is a candidate. Looking forward to seeing your list.

Do you know when All-State selections are made By the CIAC?

  79. c says:

what about robert rose the kid from shelton. look at the xavier game he had over 15 tackles and over 15 against NDWH

  83. @Football – Robert Rose is not forgotten here

  84. RAY BROWN says:

    @82–thank you mr.zumbo

  85. What!!! says:

Thanks for the geography lesson Carl. I should have just posted every player on Ansonia like the majority of the Ansonia guys did on here

  86. BigD says:

  87. Dunn13 says:

@67 “Who ever picked brown as the best qb is blind. The kid threw more picks than tds…i know hes 6’3 but lets be real cochran and milano are the states best i dont think brown even cracks the top 7 or 8″ How are they blind? He has so many big time colleges after him and is playing in th Offense and Defense All-American bowl this year. He has had articles written about him almost every week and heard he has a few big time offers already. In a article in the housatonic times it talks about how hard he has worked and states he made the U19 USA football team. To make that team as a JR must not be easy. Look at his rivals page and all the schools he has visted and South Carolina being the front runner.

  88. Frank says:

I know this is a football website but couldnt help but notice SCC is beating up on FCIAC hockey teams this week .SCC is 8-1-1 in head to head matchups including wins over FCIACs top teams Ridgefield,NC,Darien. We dont just dominate on the gridiron.

  89. GuyD says:

@Dunn13 Im not saying the kid doesnt work hard…and its nice that he has a lot of interest and made a national team im just saying that there are plenty of kids out there better than brown that arent getting nearly as much attention as this kid…i wouldnt say a season where he completes less than 50% of his passes and has a 72 qb rating is deserving of all the praise and offers he is getting…the kid is talented and has size but i still dont even see him in the same category as juniors such as castelot, baldwin, rowe as far as preformance goes.

  90. paul says:

@Dunn13 That doesnt make him good. It means hes good at marketing himself. Once brookfield lost kelly he looked awful. He would just chuck it as far as he could and the kid would go and get it. Saw the Newtown Brookfield game this season…looked like hed never held a football before.

  91. HSfootballFan says:

I would say that the kid isnt even in the top 10 QB’s in the state. Cochran,Milano,Kreiger,Morales,Castelot,D’Amato,Boyle,Fleeting,Campbell,Massie,Shanahan, and Foye. That isnt even counting the state prep QB’s(Phil Villapianos’ kid plays for Cheshire Academy, and Croces’ kid was named as the all-NE prep QB both have offers already). He marketed himself well but the film wont lie,if those big school offer him a scholarship I will be very surprised and my opinion of that school will have dropped.

  92. joey r says:

    Qb Cochran

    KICKER: Paola (Pomperaug)
    LINEBACKER: Birdsell (Bethel)
    DEFENSIVE BACK: Flynn (Masuk)

  94. Titletown says:

The rest of the blog voted for as many Ansonia guys as Ansonia fans have. All the Ansonia kids who were voted on here will make all state, Vano Newsome Wood and Martin all made all state

  95. greenwave11 says:

quarterback : hebert (wildcat of course)
    runningback : fenaroli
    Wide reciever : hebert
    kicker :jake tolson
linebacker: hebert (when he would roll up from his safety position)
    defensive back: gucci
defensive line: mike lord (defensive end)
player of the year: ryan dagnult

  96. greenwave11 says:

all joking asside hebert truly does deserve the spot or at least to be in discussion for the WR or DB spots

  97. Chuck says:

I thought boeing was great personally. He showed a lot of heart in the 41-0 loss to newtown and had a great pick to end the first half. No doubt in my mind he will go on to play for a good d1 school (south carolina?) and if he works hard enough, like he did all offseason, get to the nfl

  98. greenwave11 says:

Chuck, in fairness I agree he showed much greater quarterback capibility than casey cochoran this year, but who is going to recruit a connecticut quarterback… not south carolina thats for sure. I see boeing brown as more of a notre dame guy.

  99. Chuck says:

greenwave11 i do agree with that, although i think lattimore and company would be a good fit… i do see him at notre dame. lets hope chip kelly can sign this guy after an only mediocre season for the irish

  100. whopper16 says:

@97..interesting moniker ‘greenwave 11′ for a guy(kid) from Newtown..interesting picks that all happen to be from Newtwon, and then you reference the BHS/Newtwon game…

Go ahead and mock BB all you want, you’ll see where he ends up, def a D1 school somewhere, and will have a very suuccessful because he is a great kid and hard worker…

  101. fball5 says:

    Offensive Picks
RB-Newsome or Harrington (ansonia) & (danbury)
QB- Cochran (Masuk) & Milano (New Canaan)
    WR-Chism (Bunnel) Vitale (Hand)
OL- (Ridgefield- 185lb avg undersized but did a great job)

    Coach: (Petroccio-Staples)

  102. runninwitagun9 says:

Whopper, I completely agree. Brown’s heart and smarts will take him to wherever d1 school he wants to go. He proved in the Newtown loss that he knows how to make reads, and shred opposing defenses. The game didn’t turn out in his favor. I totally see him playing some serious ball in a few years. As for next season, Brown will most definitely blow Cochran’s records out of the water. At 6’3, the kids a player. @89…you speak the truth. amen to that

  103. football says:

Honestly rob rose from shelton would tear these kids up. I watched his games. Agaisnt xavier he was smashing everyone who touched the ball. Tyler wood from Ansonia come on he plays in the NVL the Non Violent League

  104. Agree on Rose, disagree on your Wood sentiment. That kid is a beast.

  105. RAY BROWN says:

    105 another dillusional shelton fan.

  106. RAY BROWN says:

KINDA PUZZLED BY TYLER WILLIAMS OMMISSION FROM ALL-STAR TEAMS.IM ALMOST POSITIVE NEWSOME RAN UP HIS BACK ALL YEAR.THATS WHY I DONT PUT MUCH STOCK INTO THESE TEAMS.

  107. football says:

SPB its annoying how good SCC players dont get recagnition when hands down Xavier and Hand are the best in the state. In my opinion Rose is one of the most underated players. He ran his league, the X-Men couldnt even hang with him. my opinion in the conversation of top 3 or 5 LBs in the state

  108. JB says:

QB – Cochran (Masuk), Milano (NC)
RB – Newsome (Ansonia), Fenaroli (Newtown)

  109. boeingiloveyou says:

BOEING BROWN deserves a d1 scholorship right now. I repeat BOEING BROWN deserves a d1 scholorship right now. Penn state and South Carolina are both knocking on his door begging for him to let them in. Boeings holding out he might pick LSU after their recent success. There is no such thing as a ceiling for this rising star!

  110. nvl fan says:

@ray brown its hard to but a kid on the all-state team that commits 9 false start penaltys and gets his qb sacked five or six times and he was supposed to be the back side blocker

  111. football says:

@raybrown he was playing teams that a good popwaner team could beat.

  112. RAY BROWN says:

nvl fan—somebody blocked for newsome on right side, where he put up his big numbers.football, your a shelton guy,if anybody knows about pop warner talent it has to be a guy like you.

  113. RAY BROWN says:

football, the difference is ansonia is putting up another championship banner, while shelton is looking for money to field a team.derby played sheltons pop warner defense like a fiddle.shelton would be a 4th place team in nvl.win games on field not on blogs

  114. BossBlog says:

Can’t wait to smack Shelton this year in our annual scrimmage. You Shelton guys are talking and its the kids that are going to pay. We’ll leave no doubt after this one, count on it!

  115. nvlfan says:

@ray brown if u watched anything they ran 70% to the left because the left side always pushed the line forward and always downfield blocking this is why the left side are all-staters

  116. football says:

@raybrown do you remember the scrimage. sheltons varsity beat ansonia varsity 28-27 the starters were in untill half. couldnt hang

  117. Boss blog says:

Your going to get blown out this year for running your mouths! Ansonia didn’t play even everyone. That was the highlight of Sheltons season! How bout that 17th banner we just hung up, scrub! Take a look through the record books, how’s that all time win/loss doing vs Ansonia in real games? Derby gave your sorry asses a game this year, clowns. Crawl back under that rock and come talk when your relevant again.

  118. football says:

Paola (Pomperaug) should be a unanimous decision as best kicker in the state. he holds the record for longest field goal and every kickoff he kick into the endzone.

  121. Boss blog says:

Ooops! The facts remain the same, formerfail. Ansonia’s your Daddy!

  122. Boss blog says:

After you use a comma, you should always use the space bar! Einstein! Thanks.¿) See you at the BIG scrimmage, son.

  123. Boss blog says:

Alway follow a comma with a space, Gail. Gail, that’s a pretty girls name.
