Twist of fate: Montrell Dobbs commits to Temple

by:

Montrell Dobbs’ roller coaster of a recruiting ride is finally over. After some flirtation with UConn and then Marshall, the  2010 Connecticut Post MVP and all-state football player from Ansonia will be going to Temple.

Dobbs’ choice was first reported by the NVL Football Blog on Tuesday.

We caught up to Dobbs today to ask how Temple became his school of choice, his thoughts on UConn, and the rigmarole of the whole recruiting process.

Short answer: Not fun. But he’s happy now.

SPB – Really pleased for Montrell. A wonderful young man. Coach Addazio has a big time program and both he and Tyler Matakevich will have a chance to contribute – and get a good education. Both Milford Prep. athletes.

Sean, thanks for clarifying the situation. UConn doesn’t sponsor partial qualifiers, but Temple still does. We will miss Dobbs as a Husky. But he is getting a great coaching staff led by Addazio. Even though Dobbs will likely have to sit out a year of game eligibility, he should be able to practice with the team and be ready for the 2013 season. If it all works out, similar to a red-shirt season.

As I’m sure there are going to be a ton of negative comments made, let me say congratulations. This kid is a heck of a person and player. Although I’d rather seem him playing for Uconn that wasn’t in his cards. He did what he had to do grade wise at Milford just want enough to overcome what he did in high school. I’m sure with maturing and the experience he went through he’s going to put his all into school first then football. Temple had two of CT best players in recent memory. Best of luck to them!

Congratulations and good luck to both players. Doesn’t matter what the circumstances are, both have the chance at a great education and a chance to play football.

It isn t easy to become qualified I know Mark H at Bunnell had alot of extra help by alot of people and he barely made it. He wouldn t have qualified if it wasn’ t for Bruno’ s status in that school.

    Swc you’re pathetic.

  12. KindOfBlue says:

    Congrats, Montrell.

Remember while at Temple not to write any of your papers in ALL CAPS, because people who do that are assumed to be not very bright.

Unfortunate you couldn’t make the BCS standard (not a UConn standard, all BCS schools), but Temple might have been the best team in the Northeast this year and should stay strong under Addazio.

For anyone to speak or write against a kid negatively you have to be the lowest of scum on this Earth. These kids dedicate their life to these sports and programs. They work very hard. All of the time I see kids or teams bashed because they don’t win, players may not be the smartest or they make poor decisions. Should students put a premium on academics and good behavior? Yes, obviously. But we have to remember these are still kids. We never know their situations. These kids could have horrible living situations, learning disabilities, the list goes on. But for adults to come on this blog and consistently have negative comments is just pathetic. That doesn’t take away from the good people on this blog and this state who stand up for, encourage and congratulate these kids. Best of luck to Dobbs and Matakevich. Also, congrats to all of those student athletes at the Walter camp breakfast and all whom play sports and or did good academically this year.

Good for him. i hope he succeeds on the football field as well as in the classroom and most importantly in life.

those of you criticizing this kid, think about the fact that he is lucky enough to be able to be in an institution of higher learning into his early 20s when kids actually begin to figure out how the world works. you should be hoping that he will learn and be productive in life rather than sitting back talking ish about him and calling him names. its better for ALL of us if he does well.

bgstaff, apparantly you do not know mark. Mark is a smart dude, and didn’t “barely make it”. he goes to rutgers, which is probably a better degree then you have. next year, you can say he “barely made it” to the NFL,when he comes back and makes it rain on your head. Hater
