Marcucio named next football coach at Westhill

by:

Just a year removed from his last head coaching stint in the FCIAC, it looks like Frank Marcucio is getting another chance at Westhill.

The former Bassick football coach, who spent last year as the Vikings defensive coordinator, will be hired to replace Dick Cerone. Marcucio announced his hiring on his Facebook page Wednesday afternoon.

“Thanks to the kids, their parents, the administrators and faculty and my fellow coaches for the support. It is time to get to work!!!!!!” he wrote.

Marcucio and Westhill athletic director Mike King confirmed the news to Hearst CT Newspapers. King told our own Dave Ruden that vocal support from parents and players led to Marcucio’s hiring.

“I think Frank did a really nice job with the kids this year,” King said. “The athletes on the team and a lot of parents voiced the opinion that they really wanted Frank to be the next coach. And I’m not talking just one or two kids but many. He’s got a long football history and I think that makes him the right person for the job.”

Before coming to Westhill last year, Marcucio spent four years at Bassick, first as an assistant under Dennis Wanzie and the last two as the head coach.

Bassick was 3-17 under Marcucio. In 2010, Bridgeport fired Marcucio for ‘insubordination.’ Marcucio and the school district later settled a grievance over the issue.

    SPB,
What rock have you been hiding under? Would it kill you to cover a boys hoop game? Wow, it must be nice in SPB’s world.

Occupyctpost – Did you not notice that this is the “SPB’s High School Football Blog”?

  3. Wayne says:

Before SPB went exclusively to football(mistake on CT Post part), SPB was the best writer covering boys hoops. The coaches liked and trusted him. There is a big void w/out him and the coverage has been very average. He should do both.

marcucio is an idiot – how he is a head coach is beyond me. ANyone that has a convo within the first 5 minutes knows how much of an idiot he actually is

just goes to show westhills level of commitment to their football program because it’s not leaving the basement.

This is reason that Westhill, a school with 1200 boys stinks each year. They never go outside the already bad team to hire as they think seamless transition is the way to go. They should know by now it doesn’t work for that school. Really hasn’t worked for TC either in “keeping their own”.

Wow, frank is really hired at Westhill! Did I hear right that he was chosen over Idris Price, former professional footballer, current Darien def. coordinator and all-around badass! What did Idris’ tattoos and imposing presence scare the Stamford b.o.e and powers that be at WHS into thinking that he might be too committed to turning an enormous sleeping giant into a potential fciac power? Lemma guess, because Price runs the So No Field house and doesn’t have a teaching job let them decide he wasn’t a good fit. It is B.S., Frank came from the coaching tree, or should I say sapling, of Dennis Wanzie, while Price has been like a son to Robbie Trifone, whose accomplishments at Cheshire as an assistant, McMahon and Darien as h.c. speak for themselves. Don’t let it deter you from your goals Idris, they missed big time on you, if DHS plays the Vikes this fall it will be ugly- like 49-0 ugly.

SPB- Have been a fan for awhile. That being said, what do you actually do all day? Would you give us readers a glimpse into a Day in the Life of SPB? I’m guessing you wake up at noon. Just a guess.

  8. Coach says:

Hey Sean… Speaking of Head Coach who is going to be the next West Conn Head Coach….. Murphy going for it… Come on Sean there is no offseason for you.

  9. Schiba says:

What a bad decision by Westhill. Mike king almost gave up as many forfiets this year (soccer, basketball) as Marcucio’s defense gave up points. Your team goes 0 and 10 and you keep the defensive coordinator because he did a good job???. [truncated] … he manipulated the parents and players at Westhill to support him. Marcucio ultimatly wants the AD job and will throw King under the bus like he did the past head coaches he worked for (including Cerrone). I hope Price sues.

    Nice job Stamford public schools!

  10. @occupy – I’m the online sports producer for CTPost, NewsTimes, Advocate and Greenwich Time, meaning I have to maintain the websites of the online sports pages of said papers, make sure the latest stories are all up and highlight our best stuff, etc. I used to get up at noon… when I was the head hs writer, but no longer. I’m pretty much on call most days. It’s work, my friends. So I let the ‘underlings’ ;) shine. Henry C does some nice Hoops work for us…

Westhill sure found a controversial coach. He states he can win anywhere. His combined record at Westhill and Bassick is 5-100 and 4 of his 5 wins are against Harding. Looks like it will be a seamless transition into another losing season for the Vikings.

Don’t bring Triity into this, with less than 200 boys in the school, the job attracts a very limited amount of candidates. If Idrid applied to Trinity 3 years ago the job was his.
