Masuk, Southington, Berlin tri-scrimmage and (very) quick Labor Day notes

by:

Rick Volk was out and about Saturday at the Masuk-Southington-Berlin tri-scrimmage. So here’s the footage from that.

As Rick says in his YouTube comments, with the offenses starting on the 40-yard line: Berlin-Southington scored on TD apiece. Southington-Masuk had three TDs apiece, Masuk-Berlin was 3-1 in favor of Berlin.

I checked out Staples-Ridgefield-Cheshire on Labor Day. And the simple thing to take from that is Staples’ WR James Frusciante looked in midseason form with some incredible catches over the Ridgefield and Cheshire defenses. He also made some big end-zone pass defenses. He’s awesome. But we knew that.

Both Ridgefield and Cheshire were decent. Not incredible size up front for either team. They’ve got some spots to fill and work to do. Not going to go crazy with analysis since it was a pretty controlled scrimmage like the one above.

We’re all interested in the Masuk-Greenwich scrimmage down the road, so if you were there…

Greenwich/Masuk was pretty evenly matched. A little sloppy in places, but to be expected. Don’t think Greenwich’s starting QB was playing and Malone had limited offenive role (80 yard rushing TD on the 1st play from scrimmage). Both teams ran the ball well. Week 1, for both teams, will be very interesting.

Also, any one know how the Iona Prep scrimmage went for Greenwich … was O’Neil injured and kept out of Masuk? Wondering why it has been a bit quite from the Greenwich camp?

BTW, Milone looks great in the film and the new QB for Masuk can get it done. Who is #34 at RB?

I took a drive today and took in the Ridgefield/Cheshire/Staples scrimmage today too. Staples is very impressive. Big up front and many athletes with decent size all over the field on both sides of the ball. Ridgefield’s offense showed some good things, especially when they were able to go up tempo with their no huddle. Their QB looks pretty good. Ridgefield’s lack of size I suspect will present some problems for them during the year and their pass coverage could use some more work – but hey that #4 from Staples is going to make just about everyone look like they need some work. Overall, I was reminded that we got a lot of work to do up in Hartford County to catch up with the downstate teams.
As for Cheshire – I suspect their lack of size is going to present even more problems for them in the SCC than for Ridgefield in the FCIAC.

and By the way SPB, I planned to spend the afternoon checking out Cromwell v Platt and Manchester v Berlin but neither scrimmage took place at 3:30 at either Pierson Park or Sage Park.

Masuk looked flat. I am sure they will win games, but won’t dominate. Coach Murphy knows how to make that happen. Thanksgiving game will be the SWC Championship game, but results will be different than the past 2 years. One QB definitely stood out above the other. Should be interesting to see who Murphy goes with. Murphy must definitely miss Coach Gueli, with defense struggling. To bad he left- they could have really used him this year, with so many new faces. Milone is an unbelievable player, he will dominate the league.

  5. @Northern CT – I think that’s because they changed it to tomorrow. They change these things all the time.

  6. A Parent says:

O’neil was out due to illness in the family. While Greenwich gave up that run from scrimmage on the first play, the running game was a lot more consistent from Greenwich. Alex McMurray led the wildcat offense down the field for a majority of the possessions, with Bubba Harris relieving him.

Both defenses were sloppy, with missed tackles and dropped interceptions.

One extremely bright spot for the Cardinals was sophomore Austin Longi, with a 97 yard kick return, and an interception.

  7. AB says:

    #34 Is Frank Bacarella

  8. JB says:

Good to hear Liam is fine. He is a key guy for Greenwich’s run this year. Ridgefield game is shaping up to be an FCIAC classic.

Bacarella looks to have great potential given teams will key on Milone. IMO we will see a much different, yet very effective Masuk offense this year. Certainly not as explosive as with Casey, but definitely an SWC contender and playoff capable. Although, they need to name a starting QB and get after it on offense. The defense is always tough.

  9. Baron says:

Masuk glory days are over!!! They will now have to earn wins, playing a whole 48 minutes. As far as Milone is concerened, once team start teeing off on him, he will fold.

  10. Pompy says:

Hey Baron – What did Milone beat up your kid in 3rd grade.

  11. CTHSFootballRocks says:

Milone is a top five player in the state and closer to number one than number five. Baron, your kid must have already been abused by him on the gridiron, thus the ridiculous comment.

Masuk should run the table til the Newtown game with all the marbles, once again, riding on that game.

Charney deserves the nod at QB.

  12. Stokes says:

What a great Labor Day AM. Finally saw some football at the Staples scrimmage. Like everyone is saying Staples appears to be the real deal. I was impressed with the D with #7 and #9 flying to the ball. They must have had 25 tackles between the two of them. The skill guys looked great and I thought the Oline looked really good too. I heard they were missing their great RT too. I especially liked it when I saw #70 immediately intervene(physically I might add) when one of his teammates was getting beheaded by one of the other teams. Team unity wins games. Too early for predictions but this is going to be fun to watch this year.

Running the table, for Masuk, won’t be as simple as saying it. Baron needs to settle down with the provocative comments, but his commment about them playing for 48 minutes this year – rings true. Week 1 will be very, very interesting – if Pomperaug’s young linemen have matured.

  14. CTHSFootballRocks says:

Never mentioned any blowouts. Running the table can mean 9 wins with the score of each game being 31-28.

Masuk will put up points. The question is how much can the Masuk defense step up and shut down a prolific offense. That remains to be seen.

  15. notfromridgefield says:

Thanks for clearing that up. Can we call you WikiCTHSFootballRocks? Only kidding – we both get the point. They’ll face a number of challenges this year and if Pomperaug has some horses, Week 1 will be the 1st exam. Any word on New Milford or Bethel and how they’ve fared in pre-season?

  16. Baron says:

Hey #10 & #11, I quess you are Masuk (Pop Warner) parents or players that did go the the Hand game!!! The sun is beginning to set!!!

  17. BHSFAN says:

In scrimmages, Bethel’s offense has looked even better than last season. The new quarterback is faster and is a far superior passer than Brandon Schmidt who is playing for Army. The defense has appeared a bit spotty, but it won’t need to pitch shutouts. If they remain healthy in a few critical skill positions, look for a junior-dominated Wildcat team to contend for the SWC title.

  18. Pompy says:

Baron you just answered the question. At least your kid got in the game for the 6 plays he had to.
