Trinity Catholic-New Canaan was overwhelmingly voted Week 2′s ‘Game of the Week’ by you, the ever wise high school football fans, players and coaches.
That turned out to be the correct response. (Though it might have got a few write-in votes, we didn’t include Westhill-Trumbull as an option. Silly us. But, based purely on meaning as well as excitement, we still think TC-NC was the big winner).
Anyway, so you picked that one right. Hooray.
Let’s see how smart you guys are now.
What’s the game of the week for Week 3? Not as many choices this time, but there are some good candidates.
Whaddyagot for us, knaves?

It’s hard to pick a “Game of the Week”. The one I’d most like to see? Prep – Xavier. I always enjoy watching a DII college team play. I think Prep is vastly improved but can they hang with the big (BIG) boys? Doubtful – but fun to be there if they do. The team I’m most interested in knowing about? Stratford. They can’t be that improved can they? Cheshire – Hand is interesting but will probably end up being a 20 point game. I’d have to say St. Joe’s vs. Darien might provide the best game overall. I think that one could go down to the wire. We’ll see!
Prep-Xavier could be exciting but all depends if Prep turns out to be as good as some think they can be. St. Joes will most likely get lose by double digits to Darien and they still have a year to go. Stratford was horrible last year so cannot imagine much improvement after 1 year. Cheshire vs Hand could be GOW but give the nod to Hand. GOW is Prep-Xavier as I dont think X will blow them out like they are used to but will come out on top by 10.
There are some good matchups in the area, probably more evenly paired games than usual, but i guarantee none will have more passion and spirit than the ansonia-derby game.
Come on Ray. Passion and spirit yes but Ansonia Catholic in a blow out.
Mike Quick just “put a face” on St Joes over Darien. This is definitely game of the week in the FCIAC and could be an aerial assault. Sean, it may be worth the trip with your video camera …
@JB – and you think i wouldn’t, because…?
Sean, was just thinking your video spotlights capture these great games really well. Given I can’t go in person was hoping you would be capturing the event for us. Hope the tilt creates good theater for your lens! Looking forward to the coverage … thanks.
@JB – Thanks. Just wish I had more time to do them. I run out of it quick.
I think Cheshire Hand is the GOW. X should handle Prep. Anyway you cut it, big week in SCC Div I.
Watch for Baldwin and Lombardo to have big days through the air for the Wave. Great chemistry between the two.
Stratford is that much better dont know if they are beat newtown better. I think if stratfords d can get some stops offense can keep them in the game. They have a good qb and some speed on outside.
@wave – Baldwin will need a great day because SJ’s is way better than last year. What is the injury report on Gersualdi? You could really need him full speed at DB. Pelletier is having a great year and tough to cover. Also, you will find out that SJ’s OL is very impressive; their QB has a strong arm and all day from like a 10 yd drop. Blitz him like Wilton tried and he will take you with his feet. IMO this one comes down to who can stop whom … someone’s defensive backfield will need to step up and take charge. Also, Darien’s run game with Bogner may be its most important defensive weapon … keep that SJ potent offense off the field. This is a huge test for Darien. Good luck.
DAVE K,APPARENTLY YOU DONT KNOW TOO MUCH ABOUT THE BIGGEST RIVALRY IN THE STATE.
Ansonia Derby is the biggest game. Of course Ansonia will probably win by 40 so it won’t be the best game. Darien vs. St. Joes will be the best game of the week, Stamford vs. Ridgefield will be very good as well.
Ray
I know a lot about it. One team is very good. The other team is below average. The good team leads by four scores at the half and everybody heads for the local watering holes.
Ctfb, I disagree the x-men won’t win by 10 I think it will be closer to 25 at the least.
weston at pomperaug
Xhs, you could be right but I wouldnt be surprised if it is a close game either. If prep can run the ball, watch out. I dont think you have to worry about their passing game. DBs are a question mark for Prep also. Who knows, point spread is up to 14 now.
davek—-remember a few years back when shelton was a heavy favorite, and derby knocked them off lots of shelton fans at watering holes after that one.
Ray if Ansonia vs. Derby is the biggest rivalry in the state, how come they stopped playing for a few years? Please stop, way too biased brother
They aren’t even the same towns any more
Ray just explain to me that considering your hatred of private schools you sent your own child to one? I am just curious
Enjoy Ansonia-Derby while it lasts. Soon the two schools will be together. Derby routinely graduates less than 90 kids and Ansonia is lucky to get 130 in caps and gowns. The only thing holding them back is their inability to agree on a name for the new high school. Anserby is currently the favorite, just edging out Derbonia.
perspective—-no need to explain to you—-ifyou know me that well —you should know the story.thatderby-sheltoncomment must have hit a nerve.
master—the school name is the holdup?wow
If Derby and Ansonia combined maybe they could compete in SCC D2
According to the wikiepdia (from the 2010 census) here are the populations of these single high school towns:
Darien: 20,700
New Canaan: 19,700
Ansonia: 19,200
Wilton: 18,000
Darien, New Canaan, and Wilton are Class L. Ansonia is Class S.
How is this possible? I understand it is based on the population of your high school.
Does Ansonia have an inordinate number of old people amongst its population? Or do Darien, NC, and Wilton have an inordinate amount of young people in their population?
http://www.clrsearch.com/Ansonia_Demographics/CT/Population-by-Age?compare=New+Canaan%2C+CT
Age 12 to 17 Ansonia 1,425 7.75%
New Canaan 1,827 9.38%
curious—–ansonia loses a lot of students to ob tech, platt tech,st.joes, ndwh, ndffld not
Ray- if you think I was being serious, you’re even dumber than we all thought

That Derby/Shelton game you brought up was in 2002. The field was frozen solid from a snow storm the day before thanksgiving. Coach Benanto wanted to postpone and play Friday at Trumbull’s turf field. The players voted to play the game. That loss made Joe come back for one more year and the 2003 state title. Shelton played their 2003 home games at Derby. A placard would be put up on the derby press box “home of the 2003 class L champion Shelton Gaels”
also to curious CT, I believe actually the class for football is deterined by the numbers of boys in the high school. It could be some school just hav less boys
but they still lost to derby—–sorry bout the snow
