Week 3 began as a mess with rain, rain and more rain fudging with the schedules.

But there was football played Friday night and there were a few intriguing results, especially up north, where nary a drop fell after kickoff.

Along Route I-84, Tyler Hassett and Weston hit a landmark victory when they rallied back to defeat Pomperaug for the first time in school history.

Ridgefield suspended quarterback Connor Rowe, but still defeated Stamford 24-7.

Staples had no trouble with McMahon 55-14.

Meanwhile, in the underwater league (aka, SCC): West Haven defeated Notre Dame-WH. Hand handled Cheshire. Foran defeated Sheehan. Guilford hammered Lyman Hall. Hillhouse took care of Branford.

Why would anyone with a Turf fields cancel because of rain?

  2. That’s the million dollar question, now isnt it?

  3. James Hatte says:

I would assume it would be to get more spectators at the game.

  4. R-MAC says:

The game of the night is gonna be McMahon at Staples, if things dont change in the mean time. Should be a good contest for the Wreckers at home. BMHS has been running the ball well enough to keep the Staples D-Line on their best behavior. Always a well coached team, Staples knows how to make opposing teams work and bring their best game. McMahon will need to work it and bring the best game they got to avoid the Wreckage that Staples is capable of on home turf. Friday Night Fairfield County Football.

schools with hurting atheletic budgets, need a good gate.

A turf field doesn’t help when lightning and aluminum bleachers are involved. That just might be the answer to the million dollar question.

  7. Dbagger says:

Dave not sure where you are but fairfield county looks pretty good play ball

  8. John L says:

Guilford giving WH a little scare a looking so bad now is it?

  9. alleycat9 says:

they cancel because they think that nobody will show up in the rain. its a crying shame that even in high school football these characters who run things are only thinking about the money.

and its silly, look at a team like new fairfield, they rescheduled on a turf field but because they have pop warner scheduled this weekend they will be playing on monday. MONDAY, first nobody is going out of their way to play monday… and now the kids lose a day worth of practice.

completely frustrating. football is a game that is supposed to be played in all elements, administrators need to stop being such a bunch of wimps and play the games. nobody cares if the field gets messed up, this is football.

or at least it used to be.

All right… I’d like to see St.Joe’s upset Darien or whoever…I worked with a woman who sent her kid from Monroe to St.Joe’s, not for atheltics, but for the education…She had the means, or saved it up somehow… Anyway, it’s not all about the athletics, but certainly about the money the parents are willing to sacrifice for a superior education…

  11. GHS1973 says:

hey…i’m an old guy..i don’t know how to twitter or tweet…ok…but i can see them…sounds like Xavier may not be all invincible, or i am just crazy?…lol

  12. Frank says:

Bethel loses again to go 0-3..but this is okay. Remember this is a rebuilding year, as they only have 4 or 5 seniors on this team. last time we had that few was 07, and we went 1-9. the next two years? 6-5 and 9-3 my senior year. Bethel will be just fine.

  13. Xhs says:

Xavier is not the last two years undefeated dominate state championship team. That being said I haven’t seen anyone remotely close. (including Hand) haven’t seen staples who I expect to meet in the near future. Beating a prep team who won a combined 94-0 by 20+, NDWH by 40+ and north haven who is dominating everyone by almost 40 and people are complaining I just don’t understand it. Next week should be another 40+ game before the showdown with Hand.

  14. Paul says:

Hey #11….Can we give Prep a little credit….They played great and still lost by 3 T’D's…..Let’s not all assume Xavier is vulnerable.X is a victim of their past success and is winning by 3 td’s a reason to criticize?Their schedule by anyone’s standard is brutal….Games left with Hand,Amity,Hillhouse,Shelton,Westies…Couple that with wins already over ND,North Haven and an improved Prep squad.I dare anyone on this board to come up with a tougher schedule than this. The big game is just two weeks away, and after seeing both teams this year my money is on X by two scores or more.

  15. tj says:

I know I am in the minority, but I don’t like OT settling regular season high school games. OT is a made for TV concoction for the Pros that was emulated by college and then high school. Starting from the ten yard, botched snaps, shanked kicks — that’s no way to end a game. Also, in regards to points for the playoffs, the loser gets nada. Anyone who saw yesterday’s SJ-Darien game knows that loser deserves more than that. Getting zero points for an OT loss is harsh.

Here is my suggestion, the losing team in OT gets the same amount of points as they would if the game had ended in a tie (per the tie point rules from a few years ago). The winner in OT get the sames point as regulation tie win. Kind of like the current NHL rule.

  16. @tj I like that idea, actually. …also, the OT really should start at the 25. But I also think that favors the few teams with great kickers. At least at 10 it lessens the impact of not being blessed with a kicker.

  17. jeb says:

    Dear #10

your kidding right? A mother sent her child to a Private school because of academics..get real. The public schools in ct. give each student the best well rounded education you can ever have.

  18. SCC says:

@jeb even if they do send their kids to school because of sports, it doesn’t matter because that is completely legal and has nothing to do with the catholic school coaches.

  19. Weasel says:

Holy crap, Weston! Nice job. I went there in the 1970′s and we were never that good in football (but we kicked ass in swimming, golf, tennis, track, soccer and girl’s hoops).

We were even ruled by Gminski back then; he poured in 56 at our gym while we ungraciously taunted him by singing the Addams Family theme or calling him Lurch (the pre-Duke, pre-NBA Gminski was tall, but unpolished).

So it’s pretty cool to see the football team do so well…GO Trojans!

  20. Weasel says:

    @10…

    What a load.

    My Weston class…

    215 graduates.
    95% went to college.
25% went Ivy, Little Ivy, or equivalent (Chapel Hill, Duke, UC, etc).
    3 Harvard, 2 Wharton, 2 Princeton, 2 Columbia, 2 Amherst.

The best education your taxes can buy.

Really, would you prefer to send your kids to St. Joes…or Weston, Wilton, Staples, Darien, New Canaan, Hand, etc.?

    Gimme a break.

They play good football there though.

    :-)

  21. GHS1973 says:

@Jeb & Weasel….Whatever…My kids, and currently grandkids all went to or are currently enrolled in a public school system…No money for anything else…But, if you think that all Connecticut Public School systems are created equal, you are deceiving yourself…The woman I mentioned was also a very devout Catholic, and none of her kids played sports…She paid taxes in Monroe (an excellent school system as well) but decided her kids were better served at St Joe’s, despite the expense…I’m not passing judgement on anyone, just saying that there are often more factors involved in a decision like that than just sports…

  22. roto says:

@20. You make a straw man argument. Very few players on the rosters of Catholic high school football teams in Connecticut come from those handful of towns whose public high schools you list, so they never had the choice to go to those schools.

Check the college lists at public high schools in Middletown, West Haven, New Haven, Bridgeport and in fact the vast majority of cities and towns in Connecticut (which is where the kids in question actually come from). Then ask yourself if schools like Xavier, ND-WH, Prep or St. Joseph’s provide something better that make the parents who send their kids there willing to skimp and sacrifice.

  23. Weasel says:

    @22…

    Maybe in a limited sense.

The comment that prompted the post was that St Joe’s generally offers a “superior” education vs public schools. I differed, offering a number of fine examples. I could of course have added quite a few more.

We can split the difference. But I’d say then straw man is equally found in post 10, agreed?

  24. roto says:

@20. I’m gonna agree to disagree. @10 was describing one particular parent in Monroe. Just like some parents of Andover or Exeter students would find Weston high school unimpressive, you have your view of Catholic high schools. We get it. My point is that 1) parents have personal and religious reasons to send their kids to those schools, and 2) your short list of gold coast schools is not a representative sample of public education in CT.

  25. Weasel says:

    Hi Roto,

I’m sorry to make a mountain of a mole hill about this, but yeah, I guess we do differ.

Virtually the whole southwestern part of the state, a large part of the shoreline, plus the western capitol region would expand my short list of the state’s fine public schools considerably. It is, in fact, a good representation of public schools in the state; Connecticut is historically in the Top 5 states in per capita income (last year, it was #4) and the quality of its public schools, while not tied directly to it, is directionally commensurate with this ranking.

Insofar as the religious aspects of education is concerned, you’re right, that’s a parent’s choice. But Catholic schools are in no way superior in an academic sense to secular schools any more than, say, St.Paul’s would be superior to, say, the Dalton School. That brings up the notion of what is best, and that is almost always a personal preference.

And personal preferences are personal. On the other hand, academic rigor is quite quantifiable; there is little argument that can be made that would hold that St Joe’s is in a general academic sense superior to many of the public schools in its surrounding communities, as is implied by poster 10.

That said, if as a parent you feel your child is best served by a parochial or private education, well, it’s a free country and that’s a fine thing.

On a personal level, my girlfriend is Exeter/Yale. While there are clear social networking advantages to her secondary education, trust me, there are no academic advantages (based on my sorry sample of one (:-)) of an Exeter education versus my Weston education (and no, she was not a legacy, affirmative action, or some other special talent, admit).
