2013-14 SWC-NVL Challenge matchups released

by:

The SWC and the NVL have announced their crossover arrangements for WEEK SIX of the expanded high school schedules in 2013 and 2014.

The SWC release was simple and to the point. The NVL (which didn’t email us. Send to hssports@ctpost.com or spbowley@ctpost.com, thanks) sent a more involved release expressing its excitement for the crossover matchups to the Republican American.

According to the SWC, the match ups were determined after examining the win/loss records for 2011 and 2012 season, with the home teams determining the date and time of games.

Unlike the FCIAC-SCC challenge, which didn’t quite get everyone on board due to Amity’s scheduling of Seymour in Week 1 and the subsequent backlash from the FCIAC, the NVL-SWC challenge is pretty straightforward.

Here we go. Remember, these matchups fill the 11th game in Week 6.

2013

Masuk at Ansonia | Newtown at Wolcott | Holy Cross at Weston | Woodland at Pomperaug | Barlow at Torrington | Bunnell at Naugatuck | Seymour at Oxford | Derby at Bethel | Brookfield at Wilby | New Fairfield at Sacred Heart | Watertown at New Milford | Kennedy at Stratford | Notre Dame-Fairfield at St. Paul | Immaculate at Crosby.

2014

Wolcott at Masuk | Ansonia at Newtown | Pomperaug at Holy Cross | Weston at Woodland | Naugatuck at Barlow| Torrington at Bunnell | Bethel at Seymour | Oxford at Derby | Sacred Heart at Brookfield | Wilby at New Fairfield | Stratford at Watertown | New Milford at Kennedy | Crosby at Notre Dame-Fairfield | St. Paul at Immaculate.

NVL votes ‘no’ on adding Bridgeport schools (updated)

by:

The Naugatuck Valley League won’t be bringing Bridgeport’s public school athletic teams into its midst any time soon.

The league’s athletic directors voted down a proposal to invite Central, Harding and Bassick, according to Bridgeport Citywide athletic director Neil Kavey.

Kavey didn’t remember the exact date, but was told “sometime last week.” A call placed to NVL president Tom Pompei of Naugatuck was not yet been returned.

“We thought we had a nice block of support, and we did,” Kavey said. “But there wasn’t too much of a block, I guess.

“We’re disappointed. But we’re anxious to move forward. The FCIAC guys are really going out of their way to helping us beef up our programs and help us work things out.”

Kavey said the NVL gave Bridgeport “a list of a couple of things we have to do if we every think about talking to them again, like adding or shoring up some sub-varsity programs and so on.”

“That was pretty much it, they didn’t go into anything else,” Kavey said. “Tom Pompei was very nice and very candid. We’re hoping to improve our programs.”

Bridgeport has been a member of the FCIAC since 1993. But other than boys basketball, its sports programs have had little success in the Fairfield County league.

Before the NVL, Bridgeport also reached out to the SCC, but was also rebuffed, according to a source from that league. But Kavey denied that the Bridgeport ever talked with the SCC.

Walter Camp weighs in: Hand is No. 1

by:

Hand has won the the Joseph R. Kelly Award for being the No. 1 team in the state, the Walter Camp Football Foundation announced Wednesday.

It’s no big surprise, since the Walter Camp Football Foundation goes along with the No. 1 vote in the NHR Poll.

The winner of the Kelly Award will be honored at the Walter Camp national awards banquet on January 12 at the Yale University Commons in New Haven alongside the All-America college team.

The Walter Camp Foundation will also announce its 2012 All-State team within a few weeks.

Carry on.
