Ansonia’s Sean Byrne named next coach at Ellington/Somers; Plus more Pequot stuff

by:

The Ellington/Somers co-op football team didn’t look far to find its next head coach.

Valley folk should know him pretty well, too.

Ansonia alum and former assistant Sean Byrne took over the Pequot program today after spending the last seven years as an assistant under retired coach Keith Tautkus.

The 1995 Ansonia graduate played at Western Connecticut State and then was an offensive line coach under Jack Hunt from 2001 to 2005. The Chargers won two state titles during his tenure there.

Byrne then headed to Ellington, where he developed the team’s weight room program and served in a variety of assistant coaching roles, but was mainly the team’s offensive coordinator.

The Knights have won 19 games and reached the CIAC state playoffs twice over the last two seasons.

Update: The Courant delved into the subject more on Friday.

Vinal Tech/East Hampton bolts Pequot

Also, Ellington/Somers posted the composite 2013 schedule for the Pequot League. In it, you can see the league has also gone the three-division route for this year. That, in turn, led to this find: East Hampton/Vinal Tech is no longer a part of the league.

Citing a desire to be more competitive (you don’t say…), the football co-op is moving over to the Constitution State Conference alongside Platt Tech, Bullard-Havens and Abbott Tech. Vinal Tech will also pick up the banner of the Co-op, so it’ll now be known as Vinal Tech/East Hampton.

The Middletown Press picked up on the nugget Friday.

Said athletic East Hampton athletic director Shaun Russell:

“Both schools felt we needed a football situation that would present a more competitive and realistic opportunity for on-field game success. We needed a change that would provide both an immediate boost and a long-term path that would meet the individual needs of the two partner schools as well as the combined needs of the football program.”

As for the Pequot’s new structure, the league, which stretches all across Connecticut, has now divvied itself into closer, geographical ties. The Northern schools are grouped together, the Northwest (read: Berkshire League and outliers) are grouped together, and the Shoreline League schools are grouped together. Crossover games appear to be determined by previous records (1 vs 1, 2 vs 2, etc…), making it more likely for games between the northern and southern schools.

The previous two-division configuration left little room for scheduling crossover games, leaving the Pequot to almost function as two separate leagues.

Take a gander.

SPEAKING OF WHICH: As some on here have mentioned, there seems to be some grassroots discussion about the Shoreline Schools (the south division on your graphic), breaking away from the Pequot in the near future.

Jimmy Zanor of Shoreline Sports Tweeted Thursday night that “some” Pequot teams were in talks to join the SCC by 2015.

SCC Commissioner Al Carbone said there were no discussions about such an arrangement, but he didn’t rule it out. The SCC would absolutely love at least one more team to fill out its unbalanced, 19-team football configuration. North Branford is already competing in the league for hockey…

Zanor, who covers the Shoreline, has yet to elaborate on his report. But somebody’s talking down on ye ole Shoreline. And since some of our commentators have discussed it, we have to think there’s something afoot.

Where there’s smoke, there’s a burning league.

Coaching carousel update: Bunnell, Stamford interviews this week; Ludlowe close

by:

It had been a relatively few quiet weeks since David Brennan was hired as the next coach at Masuk. Then came the snowstorm, basketball tournaments, and somewhere along the line Brian Gordon was hired a Central and Avon hired , kicking the offseason coaching moves back into gear.

Late last week, Kyle Brennan of the Rep-Am (et. al.) reported that Jim Caouette, a former assistant coach at Wolcott, Cheshire and Wilby had been named the next head coach at Avon. This was confirmed by Gerry DeSimas of the Collinsville Press.

So, unless there’s something we’ve missed, we’re down to 13 coaching vacancies around the state.

The three big ones in the area, Bunnell, Stamford and Ludlowe, are getting close.

BUNNELL has come down to five candidates who will interview this week.

Bunnell’s candidates are: Law assistant T.J. Cavaliere, who previously coached with Duane Shirden at Stratford; Newtown defensive coordinator Doug Cotto; Foran assistant and former Notre Dame-Fairfield coach Jason Hart; Bunnell assistant and former quarterback Sean Murray (he led the program to its first state playoff appearance in 2004); and former Westhill coach and Stratford resident Dick Cerone.

STAMFORD will interview its finalists Tuesday and Thursday, according to our own Dave Ruden of The Advocate. There were seven candidates total.

Not all the names have been confirmed there, however. Among the several we’ve heard is Staples freshman coach Jon Boone, a former Florida high school football coach and administrator. He works at Stamford High and figures to be a prime candidate. Also, current Stamford assistant Riis Lane is in the mix. Westhill assistant Jamar Greene will also interview. Darien assistant and former McMahon star Idris Price has pulled out of the race.

Apparently, LUDLOWE still has teaching job details to work out before it names a coach. Sources have said Platt Tech coach Vincent Camera is at the front of the line at the moment.

St. Joseph defensive coordinator Chris Sadler and Staples backs and receivers coach Mac DeVito were two potential candidates, but the lack of a teaching position eliminated them a few weeks back.

Here’s a rundown of the vacancies filled and unfilled:

NO VACANCY (11)

VACANCY (13)

  • Abbott Tech – No news.
  • Branford – We’ve heard through the grapevine former coach Gary Gravina has no interest in returning. Other than that, nothing.
  • Bunnell – See above.
  • East Haven — Considering it was over a month after Greg Volpe resigned before anything was reported or posted, we have to assume things are going well.
  • Ellington/Somers – No clue.
  • Fitch — No clue.
  • Ludlowe – See above.
  • Rockville — No idea.
  • St. Bernard/Norwich Tech — No idea.

We’re engaged! Naugatuck Valley League, Oxford to tie knot

by:

***

The courtship is over.

Let the wedding plans begin!

After three and a half months of wooing, the NVL has accepted Oxford’s marriage proposal, the Waterbury Rep-Am reported today.

All that’s left are the official vows and the ‘I Dos.”

But hang on, lovebirds.

The young school, which has apparently just teased the SWC into an uncommitted relationship since its founding in 2008, will have to wait to unite with its secret love.

With schedules practically set for the coming school year, Oxford won’t be able to join the NVL until 2014-15.

But that’s not stopping the love letters from flowing:

“It seems like this was something that was meant to be,” Naugatuck athletic director and NVL president Tom Pompei told the Rep-Am. “Someone made a reference to the sign that you see on Route 8, about the All-American Valley, with Ansonia, Derby, Seymour, Naugatuck, and Oxford.”

How sweet.

But now, the logistics:

Oxford’s addition will bump the NVL’s membership to an uneven 15 schools. The NVL announced it would accommodate the imbalance by dividing itself into three divisions.

According to the Republican-American, the divisions will be thus:

  • Division A: Ansonia, Derby, Oxford, St. Paul, Seymour.
  • Division B: Crosby, Holy Cross, Kennedy, Sacred Heart, Wilby.
  • Division C: Naugatuck, Torrington, Watertown, Wolcott, Woodland.

Pompei said the NVL hasn’t figured on how this structure would work out. “That’s for another meeting,” he told the paper.

The courtship began in November, when the Oxford board of education, led by former Oxford football assistant and board member Gerard Carbonaro, made their first public push to join the NVL. Oxford made a formal presentation earlier this month.

Proponents believed the NVL is a better fit for Oxford because of its proximity to natural town rivals Seymour, Ansonia and Derby, and because it would cut down on travel time between games.  Most of the NVL is located in and around Waterbury, whereas the SWC is spread further across Fairfield County.

The board also believed the NVL’s schools are closer in size to Oxford, a Class S school, and would create more competitive games.

Yet, Oxford’s move to the NVL will be a marriage of inconvenience for several of its teams The school has boys volleyball, lacrosse and wrestling teams, none of which are sponsored by the NVL.

Correction: Oxford doesn’t have lacrosse. So the “inconvenience,” as it were, is lessened considerably.

Last year, the SWC, Oxford’s home since 2008, attempted to assuage the school’s concerns by reorganizing its football divisions in to large, medium and small. Under this format, Oxford won a school-record 8 games and just missed a Class S playoff berth.

With the impending move, however, the once-again jilted SWC would drop back to 13 teams.

NFA’s Outlow commits to Boston College

by:

NFA's Marcus Outlow

That was quick.

NFA’s Marcus Outlow became the first Connecticut player from the Class of 2014 to make a verbal commitment. And the all-state back has apparently chosen Boston College, according to a report in BC Interruption via Rivals.com.

He confirmed the news via Twitter last night.

With a powerful 6-foot, 190-pound frame and a 4.45 40-meter dash time, Outlow had been a major contributor for the Wildcats through his first three seasons in Norwich. He burst into the statewide consciousness last year when Norwich Free Academy went 10-0, toppled unbeaten Newtown and Staples and reached the school’s first state championship game in 13 years.

Outlow, who led NFA with 1,395 rushing yards, was injured after just a couple carries in the title game vs. Xavier and finished with just seven yards on 6 carries.

Last summer, Outlow said he had received an overwhelming amount of  interest from Division I schools following an National College Underclassman combine. More recently, he claimed Ohio State, Florida, Iowa State, Clemson and UConn had offered him scholarships.

His verbal commitment comes pretty early. We are practically a full year removed from Signing Day 2014. And, as we’ve seen, plenty can happen from here.

Xavier QB Tim Boyle, of course, committed to Boston College last summer but switched to UConn after coach Frank Spaziani was fired and Steve Addazio took over the program.

Apparently, Boston College put on a full-court press to get Outlow after he visited with them on junior day.

Here’s an Outlow highlight video.

I only got to see NFA twice, but here’s the best play I saw him make in the state playoffs.

And, finally, here’s his Hudl highlight reel

Brian Gordon named next Central football coach

by:

Brian Gordon

Brian Gordon has been named the next head coach at Central.

Gordon, 40, replaces Dave Cadelina, under whom he served as the defensive coordinator since 2008.

A Bloomfield native and Southern Connecticut State graduate, Gordon has been a Spanish teacher at Central for the last six years. His previous coaching stops included Sacred Heart University and Assumption College in Worcester, Mass.

Gordon’s best known for putting together Central’s stifling 2009 defense, which was the cornerstone of the team’s 9-2 FCIAC runner-up season.

Central has had two straight losing seasons since going 6-4 in 2010.

David Brennan named head coach at Masuk

by:

David Brennan

David Brennan has been named the next head coach at Masuk High School, athletic director John DeGennaro confirmed Thursday.

And he’s a familiar face. Though he’s been an assistant head coach under Kevin Callahan at Ridgefield for the past nine seasons, Brennan has been working at Masuk as a special education teacher this year and has been in the Monroe school system since 2004.

Brennan will take over for John Murphy, who won three state championships and over 150 games in 16 seasons before resigning in December. Murphy subsequently took over the job at New Milford.

Though this is Brennan’s first head coaching job in football, but he has 26 years of experience. Before coming to Ridgefield in 2003, Brennan also served as the defensive coordinator at Fairfield (2000-2002), Hamden (1993-2000), East Haven and North Branford.

A graduate of Southern Connecticut State, Brennan has been a head coach in softball at Ridgefield, Mercy and Lyman Hall, and baseball at Guilford and North Branford.

Several sources close to the situation have said Masuk attempted to lure Joe Lato from Weston over the past week, but were unsuccessful, leading to Brennan’s hiring.

Lewis Mills promotes Jose Santana to head coach

by:

A few days after we learned East Haven’s job was opened, another closed.

Lewis Mills has promoted assistant Jose Santana to head coach, according to a report by the Register-Citizen, which cited a press release from the school.

Santana coached running backs and defensive backs at Lewis Mills last season. Previously, Santana was an assistant at Canton, Windsor and Becker College.

Head coach Greg Todd resigned in January after two years and a 2-18 record.

Santana’s hire brings the statewide coaching vacancy list back down to 18.

Another coaching vacancy unearthed: East Haven

by:

This nutty offseason hasn’t hit its zenith just yet.

East Haven coach Greg Volpe has resigned at East Haven after four seasons, bringing the current total of high school coaching vacancies back to 19 for the time being.

The news was first reported Monday by Ray Curren, aka @CurrenSCC on Twitter, and followed up by Joe “Hoops” Morelli (with an assist to Jennifer Swift) of the New Haven Register. Apparently Volpe quit a month ago. Why it took a month for reporters to dig it up, I don’t know.

East Haven principal Vin DeNuzzo took the cryptic “It’s a personnel matter,” tact when asked by NHR. Volpe didn’t respond to a Register phone message.

East Haven was 1-9 last year.

Xavier’s Boyle commits to UConn, updated signing day list

by:

With National Signing Day just four days away, Xavier quarterback Tim Boyle announced Sunday he was switching his commitment from Boston College to UConn.

Boyle made the announcement on Twitter just as Super Bowl XLVII was kicking off in New Orleans.

The quarterback began rethinking his June commitment to Boston College after former coach Frank Spaziani was fired at the end of last season. When it became clear his value might change under new coach Steve Addazio, Boyle opened his recruitment up again.

He took an unofficial visit to UConn last week. Desmond Conner of the Courant caught up with Boyle after his announcent.

Here’s the updated recruiting list. National Signing Day is Wednesday.
