Cancer claims Casey Ridgway, West Haven linebacker’s sister

Casey Ridgway, a West Haven seventh grader and younger sister to West Haven linebacker Jesse Ridgway, died Sunday from a rare bone cancer, her brother announced on Twitter.

Ridgway was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, after she was injured playing softball and went for routine X-Rays in 2011. Her fight against the disease, which necessitated the removal of parts of her leg, was chronicled by the New Haven Register in Sept. 2011.

Her passing elicited emotional reaction from the West Haven community, notably from Jesse Ridgway’s teammates like standout back Ervin Phillips, Eli Gaskins and Nyrell Moore, former teammates like Andre Gee, and Notre Dame-West Haven back Cameran Tucker.

Update: Casey’s service will be held Saturday, July 13 at Gateway Christian Fellowship Church at 129 Bull Hill Lane in West Haven, 11 a.m.

Such a sad story. My cousin knew the girl very well and was one of the nurses in her unit at YNH. She was devastated yesterday. Rest in peace.
