I thought Westhill may be able to stay somewhat close, like within three touchdowns, to Staples after reading about the Wreckers struggles vs Wilton last week.
I was wrong.
Staples scored early and often, beating the Vikings 63-14, and it wasn’t that close.
Staples did everything right, Westhill did almost everything wrong.
Against a mediocre team the Vikings can’t afford to fumble once, get intercepted for pick sixes twice, have a punt blocked and commit bad penalties. Staples is not a bad team and they made the Vikings pay for every mistake.
Quarterback Jack Massie was great, throwing for 4 touchdowns and running for one more, all in the first half before taking a seat for the entire second half.
Patrick Lesch scored twice on passes from Massie and Will Johnson scored twice, once on a pass and once on an interception return.
- Staples returns to Stamford next week to face the winless Black Knights while Westhill takes a trip to 3-0 McMahon.
- Westhill had a moment of silence before the game for student Asia Dunmore, who committed suicide Thursday. A Staples parent won the 50/50 raffle at the game and donated the winnings to Dunmore’s family.
