Weston’s Lato to take over at Masuk

Joe Lato was hired as Masuk’s head coach on Tuesday after spending the last eight seasons on Weston’s sideline.

After missing the playoffs for the first time since 2009, Masuk has its new football coach in place. And, it’s a familiar one.

Masuk hired Joe Lato, the former Weston High head coach and an assistant with the Panthers, athletic director John DeGennaro announced Tuesday.

“I’ve always been impressed, obviously of his knowledge of the game, but how he interacts with the student athletes, and how he communicates with them,” DeGennaro said.

Masuk went 7-4 in 2013 under Dave Brennan, who did not have his contract renewed after one season.

Lato coached at Weston since 2006 and led the Trojans to the Class M state semifinals in 2012. He formerly coached as a defensive assistant at Masuk under John Murphy.

Lato, who was also an assistant wrestling coach at the Monroe school, was chosen from a pool of four candidates for the position.

“He knows Masuk High School,” DeGennaro said. “He’s very successful in our community.”

Great choice for the program. Hope he doesn’t feel pressure to hire past assistants. The assistants of the Murphy era quit and shouldn’t get a chance to come back, they were all selfish and thought of themselves. A few of last years assistants were a poison to the program. Would be nice to see new faces and a true fresh start.

not all assistants…just that youth coach who thinks the world revolves around him. That guy is a bad coach.
