Berlin’s violation: This could get ugly

by:

Berlin coach John Capodice will appeal his suspension under the CIAC’s 50-point policy, the Hartford Courant reported today.

But it may not be that simple. This looks like it’s going to be a mess.

Another Naples (Florida) update

by:

Just quick, ’cause you know the drill.

Naples 52, Barron Collier 0: Quarterback Craig Wingate had 144 total yards and accounted for five touchdowns, three running and two passing. Naples’ defense forced three fumbles, had three sacks and had an interception. It’s special teams also blocked a punt in the non-district victory.

Naples is 7-0 and has outscored its opponents 327-33. Yikes.

VIOLATORS!

by:

Berlin defeated Farmington 57-0 Friday night.

And you know what that means…

[dramatic chord]

50-point alert. 50-point alert. 50-point alert.

Here was the report from The Hartford Courant:

“Jack Cooper had 131 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries as Berlin (5-0) defeated Farmington (2-3) at home. Jim Connelly completed 8 of 16 passes for 88 yards and two touchdowns.

The margin of victory exceeded the limit set by the CIAC’s score management policy.”

Oh, baby. Light your torches and join the posse. We’re goin’ to Berlin.

Now, I’m trying to think why this nice program in Berlin chose this game to go over the limit.

Naples (Florida) update

by:

The Golden Eagles are 6-0, and have outscored their opponents 275-33 heading into tonight’s 3A District 14 game at Barron Collier (3-2, 1-1 District 14).

14 of those 33 points came from Estero last week, the first time any team has scored double digits against Naples.

Both of those touchdowns came on punting situations, one was a fake punt.

Meanwhile, eight different Naples players scored in the 63-14 victory.

Yikes.

Just checked MaxPrep’s rankings and Naples, though considered a medium-sized Florida school at 3A, is considered to be a Class LL school according to the CIAC.

Just a whole other world down there.

We’re less than a month away. If you haven’t seen it yet, check out Naples Daily News’ awesome webcast, PrepZone Playbook.

Student media at Woodland: Pretty darn good

by:

High school media isn’t the same as when I was a bright-eyed and bushy-tailed (cliche) kid following coach Butch Marazzi and Amity football team through the trials and tribulations (cliche) of the 1993 season. I wrote, I think, two stories the whole season for my high school newspaper and one of them nearly got me beat up after school.

“That,” said one of my mentors at the time, “means you’re doing a good job.”

(Of course, encouragement didn’t relieve the bodyguards who walked by my side on the way out of class in the fall of ’93).

Anyway, regardless of how many stories I wrote for my high school newspaper, nobody outside of my school was going to read it. Except, maybe my parents.

That’s still the case for most high school newspapers, but not with Woodland.

Staples 20, Ridgefield 7

by:

It’s like what Staples’ coach Marce Petroccio said, paraphrasing a common quote from a Mr. Samuel Langhorne Clemens (no, that’s not the originator of the Wing-T, kiddies. Pay attention in English class).

“Gentlemen, our demise has been greatly exaggerated,” he told his charges after a thorough 20-7 victory over Ridgefield on a beautiful homecoming Saturday in Westport.

Ox goes off, and Saturday afternoon reading

by:

A pretty impressive performance by Stratford last night against a pretty good team in Newtown.

I was actually making my first appearance on Friday nights since assuming my position at the Connecticut Post three years ago. Strange. Even though Newtown has had its share of big games in the last few years, I’d covered high school football games in Wilton, Danbury, Ridgefield and Brookfield before but never Newtown.

Here’s the story and rest of last night’s proceedings which included an equally huge night from Shelton’s Alex Benedito and another by J.J. Jachym, Dave Plaskon and Law. Also, congrats to Foran for its first win under Jeff Bevino.

Bad precedent?

by:

Just a quick note on our notebook item on Amity coach Mike DeVito issue, which appeared in New Haven County editions and online here (DeVito will coach), but not in Fairfield County editions.

I wasn’t there, but from what I gather DeVito’s appeared to pick up a second unsportsmanlike penalty at halftime and was ejected from last week’s Guilford game.

But Devito, who is a Woodbridge police officer (Officer Mike, we called him during D.A.R.E. assemblies in the 1990s), will not miss tonight’s Shelton game, per Federation rules on two unsportsmanlike penalties–because the game officials reported back to their board that an assistant coach and not Devito picked up the second penalty. They just asked Amity AD Paul Mengold to remove DeVito from the sidelines.

Ansonia vs. Don Bosco Prep (N.J.)?

by:

This is an absolute classic from Quick and Cavallo on MSG responding to a letter by “Frank” from Ansonia who wants the Chargers to go play Don Bosco Prep in New Jersey and giving us a little trivia (one I’d forgotten about) on former Ansonia coach Jack Hunt.
