I arrived a half hour before the start of the Ash Wednesday celebration at Saint John’s Episcopal Church in Stamford, Conn. and found Rev. James R. Wheeler preparing to lead the service. I stood by during this private moment and watched as he put on his robe and kissed the stole before putting it around his neck.
