Swimmers enter the water at the start of the Swim Across America, the national organization dedicated to raising money and awareness for cancer research, event at Greenwich Point. Event founder and chairman Matt Vossler counts down the start.

I’ve never been a big fan of these early morning assignments, especially on Saturdays, but the light is beautiful this time of day. I also crossed paths with a man who swam the English Channel, a breast cancer survivor, 6 cousins swimming together, and an aspiring Navy SEAL. I’ve got to start getting up earlier.

Lou and Rita Molgano have owned and operated Lou’s Kitchen in downtown New Canaan for 38 years. They will close their doors Sunday, June 29. “You can’t substitute the personal feeling of a mom and pop establishment. It’s like we’re family” says Patricia Oxman, as Lou kisses her daughter Anna while saying their goodbyes.

This was one of those assignments where I arrived and could have stayed all day. Wish I had discovered this place sooner.

While talking to Steve Clark (above) in the newsroom, I heard someone ask “what’s going on over there?” gesturing to a group of people on the steps of a building across the office park. Fire drill? No. Wait. Is that…can it be? The Ice Cream Man! Sadly, there are no It’s-Its out here so I had to settle for a Chipwhich knockoff.

CORRECTION: It has been brought to my attention that it was, in fact, Clark, who initially noted the commotion in the Riverbend parking lot. “People forget that I’m a professional observer,” said Clark, who undoubtedly honed his keen sense of surroundings both in J-school and on the streets of his native Philadelphia.

I haven’t been keeping up with posts lately because I’ve been pretty busy. One of the things I was busy with was the Festival of the Photograph in Charlottesville, Virginia. What an awesome event. I was most excited about seeing celebrated “war photographer” James Natchwey speak.

Help me settle a bet I had going down there: name three famous photographers without resorting to Google. 80% of the non-photogs we polled came up with the same three.

P.S. Robert Frank’s “The Americans” was just reissued. I picked up my copy this week. This body of work, originally published in 1958, did a lot to change photojournalism in America. If you haven’t seen this book before, I highly recommend it.

A variety of reflections come together on the side of a Metro-North train as it passes by the 125th St. platform bound for Stamford.

I rode the train early this morning from Stamford to 125th St. for an upcoming story. As I exited at 125th St. and sat on the platform, camera in hand, I noticed my reflection in passing trains. Went for the self portrait but wound up with something I like even more.
